The 2016 Jeep Compass is a compact SUV offering Jeep's iconic styling in a smaller package. Produced from 2007-2017 as the first generation Compass, the 2016 model offered trims like Sport, Latitude, and Limited. Its popularity stems from its affordable price point and available four-wheel-drive, providing a blend of practicality and Jeep capability. New pricing ranged approximately from $20,000 to $28,000.
The Good

The 2016 Jeep Compass provides a blend of practicality and Jeep heritage. Its advantages include available four-wheel-drive for off-road capability (emotional appeal), a relatively affordable price (practical), and decent fuel economy for its class (practical). The Jeep design language also appeals to those wanting a rugged-looking SUV.

The Bad

The 2016 Jeep Compass has known weaknesses including subpar acceleration with the base engine and a somewhat dated interior. Ride quality can be harsh, and the continuously variable transmission (CVT) is often criticized. Watch out for potential transmission issues and ensure regular maintenance has been performed. Consumer Reports gives it low marks.

What Problems Does the 2016 Jeep Compass Have?

The 2016 Jeep Compass, like other model years of the first generation, has suffered from reliability issues. Frequently reported problems include issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT), leading to slipping or failure. Owners have also reported engine problems, including excessive oil consumption and stalling. Electrical issues, such as problems with the infotainment system and power windows, are also not uncommon. Recalls have been issued for various issues, including airbag defects and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability is a concern, with many owners reporting issues arising after 50,000 miles. Earlier model years (2007-2010) had more severe issues, but the 2016 model still inherits some of these underlying design flaws. Regular maintenance is crucial, but even with diligent care, some problems may be unavoidable. Before purchasing, a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to assess the condition of the transmission, engine, and electrical systems. Check for any open recalls and ensure they have been addressed.

How long will the 2016 Jeep Compass last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Jeep Compass can reasonably be expected to last 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-13 years. However, its long-term durability is a concern due to the known transmission and engine issues. Weaknesses include the CVT's propensity for failure, potential for excessive oil consumption, and the vulnerability of certain electrical components. Good maintenance habits, such as regular oil changes and transmission servicing, are crucial for maximizing longevity. However, even with diligent care, the inherent design flaws may limit its overall lifespan compared to more reliable competitors.

I've own my Jeep since 2016 and so far so good: it runs and perform very good. I've done some minor repairs over the years and keep up with my services. Car has approximately 93000 miles and I use it for work and travel as well. Love my car
Negative Owner Reviews
Centraltech
These cars are poorly designed and engineered to sustain Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram deep pockets. These cars won't last longer than 4 years. American made trash doesn't have a chance against its foreign competitors. With Chrysler, you don't even get what you paid for!
JeepGJ
This Jeep is a great car to drive, yet has its share of cons: the back of passenger seat had plastic peeling and the gas tank is quite small causing more stops at the gas station. The Jeep dealer is slow in handling the repair of seat.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Jeep Compass offers a relatively basic tech and safety suite. Standard features include a four-speaker sound system, and available upgrades include a touchscreen infotainment system (usually 6.5 inches), Bluetooth connectivity, and a USB port. Higher trims offer features like a premium sound system and satellite radio.

Driver-assistance features are limited, with available features including hill start assist. There are no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning available on this model year.

Safety features include standard antilock brakes, electronic stability control, and a suite of airbags. A rearview camera was available as an option on higher trims.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) vary. While some tests may have yielded acceptable results, overall ratings were not particularly impressive, especially in small overlap front crash tests. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings also indicate some areas of concern, so prospective buyers should review specific crash test data before purchasing.

2016 Jeep Compass Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Jeep Compass had a starting MSRP of around $20,000, with higher trims reaching close to $28,000. Used market prices currently range from approximately $7,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Compass has experienced significant depreciation due to its reliability concerns and age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and whether it has four-wheel drive. Models with lower mileage and a clean service record will command higher prices. Four-wheel-drive models tend to hold their value slightly better, especially in regions with inclement weather.

2016 Jeep Compass Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Jeep Compass is moderately costly to own in the long term. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel economy is decent but not exceptional. Maintenance costs can be average if the vehicle is well-maintained. However, potential repairs, especially related to the transmission and engine, can significantly increase ownership costs. Due to the potential for major repairs and lower than average reliability, it is not considered the most economical vehicle to own long-term.

How Does the 2016 Jeep Compass Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Compass competes in the compact SUV class against rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Forester. In terms of performance, the Compass lags behind many competitors, especially in acceleration. Features are generally less advanced than those offered by rivals, particularly in safety technology. Reliability is a significant weakness compared to the CR-V, RAV4, and Forester, which are known for their dependability.

Price-wise, the Compass is often more affordable than these competitors, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the lower price comes with compromises in other areas. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience and stylish design, while the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 provide superior reliability and resale value.

Alternatives to consider include the Subaru Forester, which offers standard all-wheel drive and better off-road capability than the Compass, albeit at a higher price point. Given the Compass's reliability concerns, opting for a used CR-V, RAV4, or CX-5 might be a wiser choice for long-term ownership, even if it means paying a bit more upfront.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Jeep Compass a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Jeep Compass is best suited for buyers on a tight budget who prioritize Jeep's styling and available four-wheel-drive over performance and reliability. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and risk tolerance. It's generally not recommended as a new purchase due to its age and outdated design. If considering a used Compass, a thorough inspection is essential. Look for models with documented maintenance history and avoid those with high mileage or signs of transmission problems. Lower trims might be a better value proposition, as the higher trims don't offer enough added features to justify the increased price, especially considering the potential reliability concerns.

Please don't buy this car

We were excited as Jeep has been good to us carwise in the past. A month after we got it home, the shocks started squeaking loudly. The transmission started stuttering. If we were driving, braked, and started driving again, the transmission would stutter, like the gears were slipping. This is not the Jeep value we had grown to love.

Embarrassed squealer on April 12, 2022

Loud squealing noises intermittently initially!

Experience loud squealing noises when brakes are pressed. After having brakes inspected, can't locate cause. Just so embarrassed when I make a stop. Everyone attention is on my car!!

MONEY PIT

I BOUGHT THE 2016 JEEP COMPASS HIGH ALTITUDE 4X4 LESS THAN 2 YEARS AGO AND IT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT A MONEY PIT. I HAVE HAD THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR REPLACED SEVERAL TIMES AND MY VEHICLE STILL CONTINUES TO SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING. JEEP WILL NOT MAKE GOOD ON THIS ISSUE AS IT WAS A RECALL IN 2016 AND THEY SAID IT WAS ALREADY REPAIRED. BUT YET I HAD THE CAR BACK AT THE DEALER LESS THAN A WEEK AFTER I BOUGHT IT BECAUSE THE SENSOR NEEDED REPLACED AGAIN.

It's a car

I am a senior who finally had to trade my sportier Chrysler product for something more accessible. The only suitable car the dealer had available was the Compass. Mine is the High Altitude model with the 2.4L engine and the 6 speed auto. I expected a little better performance from it, but it is acceptable, Even with the 6 speed trans it is sluggish, but the auto-stick feature ameliorates this somewhat if you choose to manually shift it. It still isn't a race car but it will give acceptable take off without waiting all day to get to the next traffic light. The ride is comfortable, and handling is tame. As noted this is not a sports car but it is a good daily driver. Interior appointments are well thought out with lots of available storage space. My biggest disappointment is the instrument cluster. It looks like it came out of an early 70's car, except that the speedo and tach have terribly small numbering. I expect I will rely more on my GPS for speed indication. I was really disappointed with the lack of a trip computer, and tire pressure sensors. These have been mostly standard in Chrysler products for over a decade! Front passenger comfort is good with plenty of leg and headroom, with well cushioned , nicely trimmed (and heated!) seats with a powered driver's seat. The center console is two compartmented with a deep bucket, and a handy document compartment in the lid. The console space is necessary, with the glove box basically sized for a pair of gloves, and maybe a pair of glasses. There are also fairly spacious door pockets, and a dash tray. Another disappointment was the lack of a USB charging station, and only one 12 volt outlet. There is a 150 watt, 120 volt AC outlet, perhaps to plug in a USB charger? While rear storage is not on par with other vehicles in its class, it is certainly adequate for my needs, Especially if the rear seats are folded down, and I often carry quite a load of sporting and outdoor equipment, as well as a walker. The entertaiment center has good sound, with AM, FM, CD and Satellite, as well as an aux jack for external devices, and I love the Uconnect which feeds my phone through the sound sound system. I have not commented on the rear seats because I haven't used them, and likely will not, nor do I often have passengers, I will most likely keep the rear seats folded down. In spite of my disappointments, I have to rate this car with 4 Stars. It will more than adequately meet my needs, if not all of my expectations. The Compass was the least expensive SUV in its class in 2016, so who would expect it to have all of the features of its more expensive brethren, or even stable mates? At this point, I am satisfied with my purchase. No it is not best in its class, but it is a nice, comfortable, even attractive daily driver!

4Wheel drives a must in Michigan

Went from a small compact car to a Jeep Compass and could not be happier, lots of leg room, storage area just the best, and definitely need 4wheel drive living in Michigan.

Priced right!

Bought this vehicle for my daughter to drive in the winter. Looking forward to the 4 X 4 option. Roads in Iowa can get pretty snowy. I feel she will be safer in this type of vehicle verses one without the 4 X 4.
