Rating: 4.39
Based on 100 Owner Reviews â–¶
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2017 Jeep Compass represents the second generation of this compact SUV. Offered in a 5-door SUV body style, the 2017 model year marked a complete redesign. Key trims include Sport, Latitude, Limited, and Trailhawk. Pricing ranged from around $21,000 to $30,000 when new. Its blend of Jeep's off-road capability, a comfortable interior, and attractive styling made it a popular choice for buyers seeking a versatile and capable SUV.
The Good

The 2017 Jeep Compass offers a stylish design, appealing to emotional buyers. Its available 4x4 system provides true off-road capability. Practically, it delivers decent fuel efficiency for its class and a comfortable ride. The Compass offers value for those needing a capable and versatile compact SUV with Jeep's iconic styling. Reliability can be a concern; however, many find the blend of features compelling.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2017 Jeep Compass include a somewhat underpowered engine, especially when fully loaded. The automatic transmission can feel sluggish. Reliability issues, particularly with the electronics and transmission, have been reported. Watch out for potential transmission problems and electrical glitches during a test drive and inspection. The interior materials, while improved, are not class-leading.

What Problems Does the 2017 Jeep Compass Have?

The 2017 Jeep Compass has faced several reliability concerns. Frequently reported problems include issues with the automatic transmission, such as rough shifting, hesitation, and premature failure. Electrical glitches are also common, affecting the infotainment system, power windows, and other electronic components.
Recalls have been issued for various issues, including problems with the engine stalling, fuel delivery, and airbag systems. These recalls highlight potential safety concerns. Long-term reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the engine, suspension, and climate control systems as the vehicle ages.
Specifically, the 2017 model year had several recalls related to engine stalling and fuel leaks, leading to increased safety risks. Before purchasing a used 2017 Compass, it's crucial to check its vehicle history report and ensure that all applicable recalls have been addressed. Regular maintenance and careful driving habits can help mitigate some of these issues, but potential buyers should be aware of these known problems.

How long will the 2017 Jeep Compass last?

With good maintenance, a 2017 Jeep Compass can potentially reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles, translating to approximately 10-13 years of service. However, consistent upkeep is essential, as neglect can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses often revolve around the transmission and electrical systems. Owners should adhere to recommended service intervals and address any unusual symptoms promptly to maximize the vehicle's lifespan. Rust can be a concern in areas with road salt.

Had great experience working w/ HUSKER Auto, Lincoln NE. Jeep was priced reasonably, negotiated down some. They worked w/ me on new battery and new screen. So far was very positive experience.

Is a gray car gives me back-and-forth to where I got to go I have the engine light on now but I think I need to get a tune up in the meanwhile it's a great car
Andre
This car met all my needs, was exactly what we were looking for. Very comfortable. Has all the safety features we needed and wanted plus more.
Negative Owner Reviews

It's my 3 jeep I purchased and it will be my last, had the same problem with the frunt suspension on my 2017 compass and my 2009 wrangler. My compass is only 3 years old and its been back to the dealership 4 times and the headaches aren't over yet
Sheriselljeep
The best part about this jeep is the Apple Car Play. I loved this feature. The gas tank is too small and the cargo area is not large enough to make this a truly functional SUV. I bought the redesigned Compass in 2017 and it has not held its value at all. Had problems with the navigation / radio and already had to have that replaced. Like the digital speedometer and driver interface
Karen
The car drives ok but I really like the old 2000 model better all the way around. The 2017 is too bulky looking. I bought this one used. It was a rental from a dealership. I've had it 4 months and already left me stranded. Died in 4 intersections which could have been a disaster. The repair shop could not find the problem and just reset all of the codes hoping it was a glitch somewhere. The automatic engine OFF/ON is very annoying since you can't disable it. You have to turn it off each time you start the car.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Jeep Compass features Uconnect infotainment systems, with a standard 5-inch touchscreen on the base Sport trim, upgradable to an 8.4-inch touchscreen on higher trims. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available.
Driver-assistance features include available blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. A rearview camera is standard.
Safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, and traction control. Optional features include park assist and automatic high beams.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be consulted for specific performance. The 2017 Compass received mixed ratings, so it's important to review the latest data.
The higher trims offered more advanced tech and safety features, enhancing both convenience and safety for drivers and passengers. The availability of features such as blind-spot monitoring contribute to safer driving.

2017 Jeep Compass Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Jeep Compass ranged from approximately $21,000 to $30,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices generally range from $12,000 to $20,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim. Depreciation has been moderate. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (Trailhawk and Limited hold value better), and the availability of service records. Vehicles with documented maintenance history and fewer miles command higher resale prices.

2017 Jeep Compass Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2017 Jeep Compass are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are moderate, with fuel economy in the low 20s for city and around 30 mpg for highway driving. Maintenance can be average, but potential transmission and electrical issues could lead to higher repair bills. Long-term ownership costs can be slightly higher than average due to potential reliability concerns. Therefore, it is not the most economical vehicle in its class to own long-term.

2017 Jeep Compass Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Jeep Compass is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Jeep Compass Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2017 Jeep Compass competes with the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Subaru Crosstrek. In terms of performance, the Compass's engine is often considered less powerful than the CR-V and RAV4. Features are comparable, especially in higher trims, but the Mazda CX-5 offers a more premium interior.
Reliability is where the Compass lags behind the CR-V, RAV4, and CX-5. The Subaru Crosstrek offers similar off-road capability and better reliability. Price-wise, the Compass is generally competitive.
Alternatives to consider include:
* **Honda CR-V:** More reliable and better performance.
* **Toyota RAV4:** Highly reliable and spacious.
* **Mazda CX-5:** More refined interior and engaging driving experience.
* **Subaru Crosstrek:** Better off-road capability and reliability for similar money.
If reliability is a primary concern, the alternatives are generally better choices. However, if Jeep styling and moderate off-road ability are priorities, the Compass may still be appealing.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Jeep Compass a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2017 Jeep Compass is ideal for buyers who prioritize Jeep styling and some off-road capability in a compact SUV. It's worth buying *used* if you can find a well-maintained example with service records and a clean history. The Trailhawk trim is recommended for those seeking enhanced off-road performance. However, prospective buyers should be aware of potential reliability issues and carefully inspect the vehicle before purchasing. Alternatives like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4 offer better reliability for those prioritizing practicality and longevity. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is strongly advised.

Not very much power, consistent over heating problems, on

Not very much power, consistent over heating problems, on my third engine with only 106,000 miles. I would not recommend this car to my worst enemy. I am stuck with a lemon that this year alone has cost me more headaches than any car I have ever owned, financial strain, and the car is still not paid off. I consitinly maintain the car, and it still leaves me stranded.

Worst vehicle ever

Owned three years i drive back roads 25-45 mph has 54k miles. This year I replaced: Battery Tires Throttle body Ball joint Rear bearing and sensors Tie rod Something else in the rear Today it sounds like the entire frame is crunching when I take off. Sound is front middle and rear. Not so sure but I cannot wait to get this jeep off my property. Enough!!! Newest and worst vehicle I ever owned

Still like it after 6 years

Now in my 6th year with my 2017 and still like it. My complaints are simple. Needs larger fuel tank, better gas mileage considering its size and engine, would prefer manual transmission, and get rid of the xxxx engine shut off function. Love the size, comfortable, still seems solid. My only repair was replacement of the satnav unit that crapped out.

Great vehicle but room to improve

Bought the New 2017 Limited Compass right out of the gate in 2017. Exterior styling is amazing (many compliments), love the grille, black roof is sharp. Interior is great with the exception of no place to put sunglasses/phone. Electronics have been a bit glitchy - remote start rarely works, screen freezes often. Wish the shifting was more aggressive. Put your foot on the gas and it seems bogged down in a gear that's too high, very unresponsive acceleration. I always override the auto-feature that turns the car off at idle - a few incidents that I felt were unsafe. It drives really well in snow but I once bent the underbody shield on city streets after a snowfall. It's a pretty, but delicate Jeep. I love this vehicle but I hope some improvements came with the next model years before I buy another 🙂

2017 keep compass latitude

My 2017 keep compass latitude has back up mirror defect. Someday it works and someday it doesn't. I almost got into other cars so many times as the back up mirror gets too slow or black out completely. So I am extra careful every time I drive. And also emergency break system doesn't work . I never use when I drive since the day I got struck in the middle of traffic. But overall I still love my Jeep for its show and comfortability.

Not 5 years old problems on June 14, 2021

Problems

I purchased the compass brand new. It wasn't 3 years old and my service airbag light kept coming on. It went to the dealer numerous times finally fixed it. Now I'm replacing the right axel and the exterior battery. I'm still paying a car note. So no I do not recommend this vehicle. I only have 62,000 miles on my truck.
