The 2017 Mazda CX-9 marked the beginning of the second generation for Mazda's three-row SUV. It's a mid-size SUV, known for its sleek styling and surprisingly sporty driving dynamics. Key trims included Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, and Signature. New pricing started in the low $30,000s. The CX-9 stands out with its upscale interior, responsive engine, and overall feeling of driving a smaller, more agile vehicle than its size suggests. Its focus on driving enjoyment makes it popular among families who still appreciate a fun driving experience.
The Good

The 2017 CX-9 offers a blend of practicality and emotional appeal. Its turbocharged engine delivers strong performance, while the comfortable interior and elegant design provide a premium feel. For practical buyers, reliability and decent fuel efficiency are key advantages. Emotionally, the CX-9's sharp handling and attractive styling make it more engaging than many rivals. It presents excellent value for its class.

The Bad

Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches and slow response times. The third-row seating is best suited for children or smaller adults, as legroom is limited. While the turbocharged engine is powerful, some may find the fuel economy only average for the class. Watch out for potential turbocharger issues and ensure regular oil changes are performed. Overall cargo space is less than some competitors.

What Problems Does the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Have?

The 2017 Mazda CX-9, while generally reliable, has exhibited some frequently reported issues. Infotainment system problems are common, including freezing, slow response times, and connectivity glitches. Some owners have reported issues with the turbocharger, including premature failure or oil leaks; ensuring regular oil changes with the correct viscosity is crucial to mitigating this risk. There have been reports of water leaks into the cabin, potentially damaging interior components. Early model years (including 2017) had a recall related to potential fuel pump issues that could cause the engine to stall. Check the vehicle's VIN to confirm if the recall work has been performed. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the complexity of the turbocharged engine and the electronic systems. Premature wear of brake components has also been noted by some owners. Rust can be a concern in areas with harsh winters where salt is used on roads, so undercoating is advisable. Always obtain a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic to identify potential issues before buying a used 2017 CX-9.

How long will the 2017 Mazda CX-9 last?

With good maintenance habits, a 2017 Mazda CX-9 can realistically reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is consistent preventative maintenance, including regular oil changes (especially given the turbocharged engine), transmission fluid flushes, and timely replacement of wear items like brakes and tires. The turbocharger and infotainment system are potential long-term weaknesses. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into major repairs. Vehicles in areas with heavy salt usage require vigilant rust prevention to extend their lifespan.

I have a bmw x5 but just had my 4th baby, so we needed a car that seats more than 5. After a lot of online comparisons, we narrowed it down to 5, the CX-9 was one of them. When we finally got to see it in person, test drive it, and see all the features it has, we were sold! There are so many features on this SUV so I won't list them all, but it is very great on gas and the third row isnt super compact like some other cars I've looked at. The price is very reasonable for what you get, and we already have a few friends with different SUVs that are now looking into the Mazda CX-9.

excellent car from top to bottom. great performance, sound system, features and power. Never owned a Mazda before this one. Will buy more in the future

This car met almost all my needs. Looks beautiful, runs great, good fuel efficiency, runs on regular gas and awesome sound system. Only one issue I had, that was car play. This car wasn’t came with car play. Now recently Mazda updated radio but I had to pay more than $300 to upgrade my stereo system. Not good. I am not buying any Mazda car any more for this silly reason only. It shows that Mazda doesn’t care about existing customers.

2017 cx9. Very harsh jarring ride. Uncomfortable hard seats. Seats too short. Power seats have uncomfortable adjustments. Vehicle is quiet but bumpy ride. Too uncomfortable to be good road vehicle. I have touring model with 18 inch wheels 20 inch more bumpy. Suspension is too stiff. No way to soften ride. Headlights set too low. Had to raise them. Gas gauge not reliable. Will not purchase again. Vehicle is highly overrated by reviews

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 offers a solid suite of technology and safety features. Standard features include a Mazda Connect infotainment system with a 7-inch display, a rearview camera, and Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims boast an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and a premium 12-speaker Bose audio system. Driver-assistance features, depending on trim level, may include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking.

Safety is a strong point. The 2017 CX-9 received excellent crash-test ratings from the IIHS, earning a "Top Safety Pick+" award. The NHTSA also awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. Optional features include parking sensors and a head-up display. While the infotainment system is functional, its graphics and processing speed aren't as advanced as some competitors. The absence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the base trim is a drawback for some users. Overall, the CX-9 provides a comprehensive array of tech and safety features suitable for family use.

2017 Mazda CX-9 Prices and Market Value

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 had a starting MSRP in the low $30,000s, with higher trims reaching into the mid-$40,000s. Currently, used market prices range from around $15,000 to $25,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The CX-9 depreciates at a moderate rate, influenced by factors like mileage, condition, and service history. Lower mileage examples in excellent condition, particularly higher trims like the Signature, command higher resale values. The vehicle's reputation for stylish design and engaging driving dynamics helps it retain value compared to some competitors. A clean title and documented maintenance records are crucial for maximizing resale value.

2017 Mazda CX-9 Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 sits in the middle ground for ownership costs. Insurance rates are generally average for its class. Fuel costs can be moderate, depending on driving habits and fuel grade (premium recommended for optimal performance). Maintenance is generally reasonable, but turbocharged engines can require more specialized care. Potential turbocharger repairs could increase costs. Overall, the CX-9 is not the cheapest SUV to own, but it's also not excessively expensive, balancing premium features with manageable running costs.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Mazda CX-9 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 competes with the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Kia Sorento. In terms of performance, the CX-9 offers a more engaging driving experience than the Pilot or Highlander, but the Explorer's available V6 engines provide more power. Feature-wise, the CX-9 is competitive, though some rivals offer more advanced infotainment systems. Reliability is generally good, but the Pilot and Highlander have a slightly better track record. Price-wise, the CX-9 is comparable to its rivals.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Honda Pilot: More spacious third row, better fuel economy.
  • Toyota Highlander: Excellent reliability, strong resale value.
  • Kia Sorento: More affordable, long warranty.

If driving enjoyment is a priority, the CX-9 is a strong choice. However, if maximum space or ultimate reliability are paramount, the Pilot or Highlander might be better options.

The 2017 Mazda CX-9 is ideal for families who prioritize style and driving enjoyment in a three-row SUV. It's worth buying if you appreciate its upscale interior and responsive handling. A used CX-9 can be a good value, especially if it has been well-maintained and has a clean history. The Grand Touring or Signature trims offer a good balance of features and luxury. Be sure to have any potential purchase inspected by a mechanic to address any potential turbocharger or infotainment issues. Consider a newer model year if advanced technology features are a must-have.

Would Recommend!

We ended up buying our CX-9 once we finished the end of our lease since we have enjoyed the car so much. Currently, our mileage is around 50K miles & we've only had 2 issues so far: check engine light would not go off (emission's issue) and a GPS issue. Our GPS could never locate our car and would show us miles away. The dealer was able to fix both issues. We love the way how solid the car feels on the road and the inside/outside look of the car. Perfect for a family of 4-5 since the 3rd row is tight.

Very good value for the money

I've researched a lot the options on the 7-seat SUV range before buying this one. It is very stylish, despite being a big family SUV. On the road it is fun to drive and you almost forget you are in a big bulky car. The trunk doesn't have as much cargo capacity as, for example, a Pilot, but if you need that much space perhaps you should consider a truck. πŸ™‚ One of the high points of the car I think is the amount of premium features that come standard. Things like head up display projected on the front windshield, which is something that you only get on high end BMW, Audi or Mercedes.

Just love my cx-9

I love my cx-9...have owned it since new. Only one complaint! Where the windshield meets the roof contains real blind spots. Have to look around them to see what is to my left and really double check if anything is coming to my right..otherwise, I love my Mazda!!

Glad I chose Mazda

I love my CX-9. It is a good looking car, and the value for the price is great. It gives us enough room to sit my family of 8 and/or haul items when necessary.

Incredibly well built, quiet and spacious

Love the way Mazda makes an SUV. This is our second CX-9, the new version is the best yet. Great handling, styling and performance. I'd buy another one if Mazda switch to electrification.

nice car but has some issues

The car has issues with the exterior finish. I have minor scratches all over the car. I was told the it was poor owner care. I'm not a white glove guy but not careless either. The finish on my are is soft and scratches very easily. I was told that dark color cars may scratch by going through a car wash. Never before have I had an issue with dark cars. I believe the problem is with Mazda not poor care.

Great car!

Pretty slick looking car, inside and out. We needed more room than a CX-5 and this worked out perfectly. Nice smooth ride too. Love it
