The Good
The 2023 Mazda CX-9 excelled in delivering a rewarding driving experience and a refined cabin. Performance was surprisingly sporty for an SUV. Reliability was generally good. Comfort was above average thanks to well-designed seats and a quiet interior. Its standout design appealed to emotional buyers, while practical buyers appreciated its safety features, decent fuel efficiency, and overall value.
The Bad
The 2023 Mazda CX-9's third-row space was somewhat cramped compared to some competitors, making it less ideal for consistently hauling adults. The infotainment system, while stylish, wasn't always the most intuitive. Some owners noted that the turbocharged engine required premium fuel for optimal performance. While generally reliable, turbocharger issues could occur over the long term.

What Problems Does the 2023 Mazda CX-9 Have?
Recalls have been issued for CX-9 models in the past for various issues, but it's critical to check the NHTSA website for any specific recalls affecting the 2023 model year. Long-term reliability concerns mainly revolve around the turbocharger and the electronic systems. Regular maintenance, following Mazda's recommended service schedule, and addressing any unusual noises or performance issues promptly can mitigate potential problems. Earlier model years (prior to 2018) had some isolated reports of water leaks and paint issues, but these were largely addressed in later iterations.

Higher trims added features such as a head-up display, a surround-view camera system, and parking sensors. Optional features included a premium Bose audio system and navigation.
Crash-test ratings were excellent. The CX-9 consistently earned high marks from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). How Does the 2023 Mazda CX-9 Compare to Other Vehicle?
Price-wise, it generally sat between the more budget-friendly options and the premium offerings. If cargo space and third-row room are paramount, the Telluride or Palisade might be better choices. If fuel economy and reputation for reliability are key, the Highlander is a strong contender. For a balance of sportiness, style, and features at a reasonable price, the CX-9 was an excellent choice. The new Mazda CX-90 is a better alternative with a more modern platform and improved features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Mazda CX-9 a Good Vehicle?
Grumpy Troll on March 6, 2023
A great handling, comfortable 3 row mid-size SUVDespite this being the final year offered (the CX-90 will replace it soon) the CX-9 is still a looker. The 6 speed transmission shifts smoothly and the 2.5L turbo has plenty of power to move this 4200 pound AWD, SUV. Seats are very comfortable in both first and middle and I keep the third row folded down leaving a good sized cargo area for hauling groceries, 50lb bags of birdseed, softener salt and anything else I need to carry. And I absolutely love the way this thing handles! It feels far more like a nimble car than a 3 row SUV. The 12 speaker Bose sound system is clear and powerful. The cabin is very quiet at all speeds. The ride is firm but solid and comfortable. Not a squeak or rattle. I have the Carbon Edition and I feel it looks as fresh as any new three row mid-sized SUV out there. I traded my 2019 Ram Limited (an incredibly luxurious truck for the Mazda and I was concerned about adapting to a smaller vehicle but the CX-9 is everything I could have hoped for. I would recommend anyone who enjoys driving and has to occasionally carry some bulky stuff to consider one of these before they're gone.
