The 2014 Mazda CX-9 is a mid-size crossover SUV known for its sporty handling and attractive styling. Introduced as a replacement for the MPV minivan, the CX-9 spanned model years 2007-2016 in its first generation. Key trims include Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring. The 2014 CX-9, when new, had a pricing range from approximately $30,000 to $35,000. It stands out due to its engaging driving experience, a rarity in the three-row SUV segment.
The Good

The 2014 Mazda CX-9 offers a compelling blend of performance and practicality. Its responsive handling and strong V6 engine appeal to emotional buyers seeking driving enjoyment. Reliability is generally good, and the spacious cabin offers decent comfort. While not the most fuel-efficient, it provides good value for families needing three rows and a touch of sportiness. The design is also stylish and modern for its time.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 Mazda CX-9 include its relatively poor fuel economy compared to some competitors. The infotainment system can feel dated. Also, watch out for potential water leaks around the sunroof (if equipped). Some owners have reported issues with the air conditioning system and potential transmission problems at higher mileage. Rust can also be a concern in colder climates.

What Problems Does the 2014 Mazda CX-9 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Mazda CX-9, and often seen in similar model year CX-9s, include issues with the air conditioning system, particularly compressor failures. Some owners have reported transmission problems, such as rough shifting or slipping, especially at higher mileage. Water leaks, particularly around the sunroof and liftgate, are also a known issue. Rust, primarily in areas exposed to road salt, is a potential concern, especially in northern regions.

While specific recalls for the 2014 model year might vary, it's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any active recalls related to safety or performance. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the aforementioned air conditioning and transmission issues. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is essential to mitigate these risks. Some owners have also mentioned problems with the power liftgate mechanism over time. The infotainment system, while functional, can feel dated compared to newer systems, but is not necessarily a reliability issue.

How long will the 2014 Mazda CX-9 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Mazda CX-9 can reasonably be expected to reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 10-15 years of service. Key to longevity is diligent maintenance, including regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and cooling system service. Long-term durability can be affected by the aforementioned potential weaknesses like air conditioning compressor failures, transmission issues, and rust. Vehicles regularly exposed to harsh winter conditions with road salt may experience accelerated rust. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more significant and costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Mazda CX-9 offers a decent array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include three-zone automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity, and a basic audio system. Higher trims add leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power driver's seat, and a blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert.

The Grand Touring trim boasts a navigation system, Bose audio system, automatic headlights, and rain-sensing wipers. Some models include a sunroof and adaptive front lighting. The infotainment system, while functional, lacks the modern features and responsiveness of newer systems.

Safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Optional driver-assistance features, primarily on higher trims, include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA should be researched for specific performance in various crash scenarios. Generally, the CX-9 performed well in crash tests for its class and era, offering good occupant protection.

2014 Mazda CX-9 Prices and Market Value

The 2014 Mazda CX-9 had a starting MSRP of around $30,000 when new, with higher trims reaching approximately $35,000. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The CX-9 has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and mileage. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and geographical location. Models with lower mileage, clean titles, and documented maintenance records command higher prices. Demand for three-row SUVs also influences resale value.

2014 Mazda CX-9 Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Mazda CX-9 is moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel economy, at around 19 MPG combined, is not the best, leading to higher fuel expenses. Maintenance costs are generally reasonable, but potential repairs, such as air conditioning compressor or transmission issues, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits and the need for major repairs. While not the most economical, careful maintenance can help manage expenses.

2014 Mazda CX-9 Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Mazda CX-9 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon Convertible with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Mazda CX-9 Compare to Other Wagon Convertible?

The 2014 Mazda CX-9 competes with vehicles like the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse. In terms of performance, the CX-9 offers a more engaging driving experience than most rivals, but its fuel economy lags behind. Feature-wise, it's comparable, although some competitors offer more advanced technology for the model year. Reliability is generally good, but the Highlander and Pilot have a stronger reputation for long-term dependability. Price-wise, a used CX-9 is often more affordable than a used Highlander or Pilot.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Highlander for superior reliability and fuel economy, and the Honda Pilot for its spaciousness and family-friendly features. The Ford Explorer offers a more rugged image and available V8 engine (depending on the year), but its reliability can be questionable. The Chevrolet Traverse provides more cargo space but lacks the CX-9's sporty handling. If driving enjoyment is a priority, the CX-9 is a solid choice. Otherwise, the Highlander or Pilot might be better options for overall reliability and practicality.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Mazda CX-9 a Good Wagon Convertible?

The 2014 Mazda CX-9 is ideal for families who prioritize a more engaging driving experience in a three-row SUV. It's worth buying used if you find a well-maintained model with a comprehensive service history. Look for Touring or Grand Touring trims for added features and safety equipment. Be prepared for slightly lower fuel economy and potential maintenance costs associated with an older vehicle. Inspect the air conditioning system and transmission carefully before purchasing. It's a good choice if you value sporty handling and attractive styling, but be mindful of potential long-term reliability concerns compared to some competitors.

Best Bang for the Buck

Great car/suv. Great in snow with all weather tires. The car is very roomy without being too large. Excellent height for seeing over large suv's pulling out of a parking lot. Twenty miles per gallon is very respectable for all wheel drive on such a large vehicle. Six cylinder engine is much better that the turbo 4 of later models. Headlights are prone for condensation.

Nice SUv

Very sporty for its size. Comfortable and a good family car. I put some All Terrains on the vehicle and they make the vehicle look more masculine. AWD is very competent on beach and in snow.

I had to give it a perfect rating

We had 2 MPV vans prior to trading our last model in for the grand touring trim late 2013. It was so sporty and a real eye catcher back then. It still is a great looking reliable family vehicle and has never had a problem. Only thing other than routine service was a battery change this year. We’re gonna use it to tow a small camper and see how it performs with a little more demand!

Love this SUV

I had it for three years now and have been very happy with it. It has room for seven and for the size gas usage is not to bad. I love the way it handles itself while driving but dont take it on a icy hill.

Very dependable

It would have been much better if this model year had a push button start. They started adding it from 2016 model. Also, the mirrors don't fold automatically which is not very nice.

Great Mid-Sized SUV

We were looking for something with more space but not quite the size of a full size SUV. This car is the perfect fit, it has 3 rows, with enough space for adults in all 3 rows, and all 3 rows are very comfortable to sit in. It has the higher profile we were looking for, the ride is very smooth, and it's a very fin car to drive. It has AWD, and the Entertainment system is reliable, easy to use, and the best I have ever seen in a car. The only negative is that the gas milage is lower that that of it's competitors, but considering it's reliability, and everything you can get for the price compared to it's competitors, it is well worth it.
