What Problems Does the 2009 Mazda CX-9 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2009 Mazda CX-9 include issues with the water pump. Premature water pump failure can lead to overheating and potential engine damage. Transmission problems, such as rough shifting or slipping, have also been reported by some owners. Rust is another potential concern, especially in areas with road salt during winter months. Check under the vehicle and around wheel wells for signs of corrosion.

Recalls for the 2009 Mazda CX-9 have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage due to corrosion of fuel filler pipe and issues with the side marker lights. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN on the NHTSA website to determine if all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the durability of the transmission and the potential for water pump failure as the vehicle ages. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes, is crucial to mitigating these risks. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system, particularly with the compressor. The transfer case in AWD models should also be inspected regularly for leaks and proper function. Properly maintained CX-9s can last for many years, but neglecting maintenance can lead to costly repairs.

How long will the 2009 Mazda CX-9 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2009 Mazda CX-9 can realistically achieve 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 15-20 years of service. Long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance habits. Weaknesses that emerge over time often include the aforementioned water pump and transmission issues. Suspension components like struts and bushings may also require replacement as the vehicle ages. Addressing these issues promptly can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. Regular oil changes, transmission fluid flushes, and coolant flushes are essential.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Mazda CX-9 offered a reasonable suite of tech and safety features for its time. Standard tech included a six-speaker audio system, keyless entry, and tri-zone automatic climate control. Higher trims added features such as a premium Bose audio system, Bluetooth connectivity, and a navigation system. An optional rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player was also available.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles but included available features like a blind-spot monitoring system on the Grand Touring trim. Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and a full complement of airbags (front, side, and curtain).

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) generally showed good performance. The CX-9 earned "Good" ratings in several categories, indicating a strong level of crash protection for occupants. However, it's important to consult the IIHS and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) websites for specific crash-test results for the 2009 model year. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2009, so comparing it to newer vehicles isn't an apples-to-apples comparison. The inclusion of features like ABS and stability control were advanced for their time.

How Does the 2009 Mazda CX-9 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2009 Mazda CX-9 competed with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Chevrolet Traverse, and Ford Explorer. In terms of performance, the CX-9 offered a more engaging driving experience than the Highlander and Pilot, but the Highlander and Pilot are known for their superior reliability. The Traverse offered more interior space, while the Explorer provided more robust towing capability.

In terms of features, the CX-9 was competitive, offering a good range of standard and optional equipment. However, some rivals offered more advanced features or more luxurious interiors. Best Car Ever!

This car has been one of the best investments I have ever made! Over the past decade, I've driven this car, my daughters learned to drive with this car (thankfully, no accidents), and it has been a reliable, comfortable, and stylish addition to our collection of cars. We own about seven different models and I would definitely rate this one as the best value/most reliable vehicles we own.

10 years later we bought a new one

2009 was the last year before Mazda moved to the ridiculous Disney(r) Cars smiley-faced grill and got rid of the LED taillight array. We loved the CX-9 so much we just bought a 2019. Over the years we had our share of maintenance issues and brought it in for a few recalls, but nothing outrageous. After 160k miles the transmission is losing transmission fluid, although I don't know where, so it was time to go. A window motor is also starting to fail, the 2nd, which is a $300 repair, and the power liftgate occasionally complains and has to be manually pulled down. But great 3-row for the money, and not as common as other crossovers.

Great Family Car

We've taken this car to the beach several times. We've loaded it up with a double jogger, rooftop cargo bag and a tow hitch platform (we call it the 'back deck!) with a cooler strapped to it. It has a nice ride and with the third row, everyone has a great seat. I've owned the Pilot, FX 35 and for the price, the CX-9 is a great value.

Great Mazda!

We have really enjoyed our Mada CX-9! Roomy and comfortable! This car is a beast in the cold New York winters and a force to be reckoned with in the drifty snow.
