The 2008 Mazda CX-9 had some known weaknesses. Potential issues include water pump failures, transmission problems, and cracking dashboards. Fuel economy was not a strong point. What Problems Does the 2008 Mazda CX-9 Have?

The 2008 Mazda CX-9 has several frequently reported problems. Water pump failure is a common issue, potentially leading to engine overheating and damage if not addressed promptly. Transmission issues, including rough shifting or complete failure, have also been reported. Cracking dashboards are another prevalent cosmetic problem, particularly in warmer climates.
Recalls for the 2008 CX-9 have included issues related to the power liftgate potentially falling and problems with the side marker lights. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls.
Long-term reliability concerns center around the aforementioned water pump and transmission issues. Owners should be diligent with maintenance, including regular fluid changes, to mitigate these risks. The 2007 and 2008 model years seem to have a higher incidence of these problems compared to later years, possibly due to early production issues. Overall, while the CX-9 offers a great driving experience, potential buyers should be aware of these reliability concerns and factor them into their decision.

How long will the 2008 Mazda CX-9 last?

A 2008 Mazda CX-9, with proper maintenance, can reasonably achieve 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching this milestone with diligent care, including regular oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing issues promptly. However, the longevity significantly depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting crucial services, like transmission fluid changes, drastically reduces its lifespan.
Over time, the CX-9's weaknesses, such as water pump failure and potential transmission problems, can become more pronounced. The interior trim, especially the dashboard, may show wear and tear. Overall, a well-maintained CX-9 can be durable, but its inherent weaknesses must be considered.

I brought the car at 100000 km I put on 80000 on it no reliability issues. Grate in cold weather like -35°c and snow with all wheel drive in city not good mileage but on highway it is really good. Can do 800 km a 1/4 tank

I can not believe these cars are so cheap in Canada. You can get a 2008 for $3000 which is amazing. I own a 2008 and 2009 and absolutely love them. Luxury vehicle with great interior and an amazing driving experience. It is very roomy and drives like a car. Con: Tires are very expensive and make sure you get snow tires
Negative Owner Reviews
SOVREN_Member
As a less then happy new owner of the 2008 Mazda CX-9, I am wondering if perhaps Consumer?s Report erred in tallying the scores of the CX-9 and the similar cars when they did the review before selecting the CX-9 as ?Car of the Year?. After only several months of ownership, I now realize that the purchasing of the CX-9 was not a good value for the dollars spent. At fewer 2500 miles, I have had a body seam fail and there was no sign of any impact. Since my previous car was also a Mazda (2006 RX-8) with significant mechanical problems that Mazda proved incapable of solving, I am wondering if the overall quality of the entire Mazda line has not been degraded. Another word of warning, the surveys for Mazda of America are shared with the dealers without adequate screening. I recent had a dealer threaten to withhold warranty work because I ?was defaming his dealership? as he regurgitated (inaccurately) comments I had entered on a survey concerning delivery problems with my CX-9. I loved my 2 previous Miatas (1990 and 2001), but my last 2 Mazdas (2006 RX-8 and the current 2008 CX-9) have me very concerned with not only the vehicles, but also the dealer and Mazda of America support of them.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Mazda CX-9 offered a range of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard entertainment features included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary input. Higher trims offered an upgraded Bose audio system. Navigation was available as an option on some models.
Driver-assistance features were relatively limited compared to modern standards, but some models included a blind-spot monitoring system. Standard safety features comprised anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain).
Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally good. The CX-9 typically received high marks in frontal and side-impact crash tests, providing reassurance regarding occupant safety.
Optional features varied depending on the trim level and packages chosen. These could include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, power liftgate, and parking sensors. While the technology wasn't cutting-edge, the 2008 CX-9 offered a decent array of features for its era, prioritizing safety and fundamental entertainment needs.

2008 Mazda CX-9 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Mazda CX-9 ranged from approximately $29,000 to $35,000 depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $4,000 to $10,000, but exceptionally well-maintained examples might command a slightly higher price.
The CX-9 has depreciated significantly over time, as is typical for vehicles of this age. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and the presence of desirable options like all-wheel drive or premium audio systems. Known reliability issues can also negatively impact resale value. A clean title and comprehensive service records will positively influence the selling price.

2008 Mazda CX-9 Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Mazda CX-9 is not the most economical vehicle to own. Insurance costs are moderate, but fuel consumption can be high due to its V6 engine. Maintenance and repair costs can be above average, especially considering potential issues like water pump and transmission problems. Long-term ownership costs can accumulate due to these potential repairs and higher fuel consumption. While not exorbitant, owners should factor in these expenses when considering a used CX-9.

2008 Mazda CX-9 Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 Mazda CX-9 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 Mazda CX-9 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2008 Mazda CX-9 competed with vehicles like the Toyota Highlander, Honda Pilot, Ford Explorer, and Chevrolet Traverse. In terms of performance, the CX-9 offered more engaging handling than the Highlander and Pilot, making it a sportier choice. Feature-wise, it was competitive, offering similar amenities to its rivals. However, reliability was a weak point compared to the Highlander and Pilot, which are known for their dependability.
Price-wise, the CX-9 was generally in line with its competitors. The Ford Explorer provided a truck-like feel and towing capacity, while the Chevrolet Traverse offered more interior space. If reliability is a top priority, the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot are better alternatives. If sporty handling and design are more important, and you're willing to accept slightly higher risk of repairs, the CX-9 is a reasonable choice. A similar alternative with better reliability would be a slightly newer Buick Enclave or Acura MDX if your budget allows. Consider a thorough inspection before buying any used SUV.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Mazda CX-9 a Good Wagon?

The 2008 Mazda CX-9 is ideal for buyers who prioritize sporty handling and stylish design in a mid-size SUV and are willing to accept slightly lower reliability than some competitors. It's worth buying as a used vehicle if you find a well-maintained example with a comprehensive service history. Look for evidence of regular maintenance, especially transmission fluid changes. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended. Lower trims may offer better value, but the Grand Touring trim provides more features. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Highlander or Honda Pilot. Only purchase if the price reflects its age and potential maintenance needs.

I love this SUV

This vehicle has it all, 3rd row seating, heated leather seats, and great control on the road. I only wish that it hadnt been in a drive by shooting by our old house and every time wife looks at the hole in the car it reminds her of it.

Great car

This car has been really reliable for my family, is easy to drive, spacious enough for a family of five, good for trips. Third row isn't super huge but it's just a third row; tons of room in the trunk when third row seats are put down.
