Rating: 4.66
Based on 56 Owner Reviews
Cathleen V | March 31, 2025
The Honda Odyssey has been a minivan mainstay for decades. The 2020 model continues that legacy as a spacious and practical family hauler. It's a minivan, offered in LX, EX, EX-L, Touring, and Elite trims. New, the 2020 Odyssey ranged from around $31,000 to $48,000. Its Magic Slide 2nd-row seats and Honda Sensing safety suite contribute to its popularity.
The Good

The 2020 Honda Odyssey boasts strong performance with its V6 engine and a comfortable ride. Known for Honda reliability, it offers a spacious and well-designed interior for the family. Excellent safety ratings offer peace of mind, while good fuel economy for the class and strong resale value make it a practical choice.

The Bad

Some 2020 Honda Odyssey owners have reported issues with the infotainment system, including glitches and slow response times. The 9-speed transmission found in lower trims can sometimes exhibit rough shifting. Also, while generally reliable, the Odyssey's complex features can lead to more potential repair points as it ages.

What Problems Does the 2020 Honda Odyssey Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2020 Honda Odyssey often revolve around the infotainment system. Owners have noted slow response times, glitches, and connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some have also reported issues with the 9-speed automatic transmission found in the lower trims, citing rough or hesitant shifting. Recalls have occurred, but these vary depending on the specific vehicle identification number (VIN). Always check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information specific to your vehicle. Long-term reliability concerns generally focus on the complexity of the minivan's features. Power sliding doors, rear entertainment systems, and advanced safety features can potentially lead to more repairs as the vehicle ages. While Honda is known for reliability, these features add potential points of failure. Some owners have reported issues with the auto start-stop system, which can be jerky. Overall, while generally reliable, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider an extended warranty for peace of mind, especially on higher trim levels with more features.

How long will the 2020 Honda Odyssey last?

With proper maintenance, a 2020 Honda Odyssey can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, potentially lasting 10-15 years. Regular oil changes, timely transmission fluid replacements, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses can emerge in the electrical system due to the many electronic features. Power sliding door mechanisms, the rear entertainment system, and the infotainment screen are potential points of failure. Rust can be a concern in colder climates with salted roads, so rustproofing and regular washing are recommended. Overall, the Odyssey is built to last, but consistent maintenance is key to maximizing its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Honda Odyssey is equipped with a range of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard features include a rearview camera and push-button start. Higher trims offer an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The Touring and Elite trims add a rear entertainment system with a 10.2-inch display, Blu-ray player, and HDMI input. CabinWatch allows the driver to view the rear passengers, and CabinTalk enables communication with rear passengers through the speakers or headphones.

Driver-assistance features include Honda Sensing, which incorporates adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available on EX trims and above. Safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, and stability control. Optional features include a wireless phone charger (Elite) and HondaVac, an integrated vacuum cleaner (Touring and Elite). The 2020 Honda Odyssey earned a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ (when equipped with specific headlights). These high ratings demonstrate Honda's commitment to safety in this family-oriented vehicle. The advanced technology features provide both convenience and safety for drivers and passengers alike.

2020 Honda Odyssey Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2020 Honda Odyssey ranged from approximately $31,000 for the base LX trim to around $48,000 for the top-of-the-line Elite trim. Current used market prices vary based on mileage, condition, and location, but expect to find them in the range of $25,000 to $40,000. The Odyssey holds its value relatively well due to Honda's reputation for reliability and the strong demand for minivans. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level (higher trims generally command higher prices), and maintenance history. A clean title and documented service records are also essential for maximizing resale value.

2020 Honda Odyssey Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2020 Honda Odyssey are typically moderate, reflecting its safety ratings and target demographic. Fuel costs are reasonable for a minivan, with an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined. Maintenance is generally affordable, thanks to Honda's reliability and readily available parts. However, repairs on complex systems like the power sliding doors or entertainment system can be expensive. Overall, the Odyssey is relatively economical to own compared to other minivans, but proper maintenance is crucial to avoid costly repairs down the line.

2020 Honda Odyssey Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Honda Odyssey is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Honda Odyssey Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Honda Odyssey competes with the Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna, and Kia Sedona. In terms of performance, the Odyssey's V6 engine is comparable to its rivals, offering ample power for daily driving. Feature-wise, the Odyssey stands out with its Magic Slide seats and available HondaVac. Reliability is a Honda strong suit, generally exceeding the Pacifica. The Sienna offers available AWD which the Odyssey does not.

The Pacifica offers a plug-in hybrid variant, something the Odyssey lacks. The Sedona is often a more budget-friendly option, but it sacrifices some features and refinement. Price-wise, the Odyssey is typically positioned between the Sedona and the Pacifica/Sienna, making it a competitive choice. In terms of alternatives, the Toyota Sienna is a strong contender due to its reliability and available AWD. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is a good option for those seeking better fuel economy and tax incentives. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual needs and priorities, but the Odyssey remains a top pick in the minivan segment due to its well-rounded performance, features, and reliability. Consider the Sienna for AWD or the Pacifica Hybrid for fuel efficiency.

Ranks #214 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Honda Odyssey a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2020 Honda Odyssey is an ideal minivan for families seeking a spacious, reliable, and feature-rich vehicle. It's a worthwhile purchase, especially on the used market where depreciation makes it more affordable. The EX and EX-L trims offer a good balance of features and value, while the Touring and Elite trims cater to those seeking premium amenities. If reliability is your top priority, a well-maintained Odyssey is a solid choice. However, be aware of potential infotainment and transmission issues, and consider a pre-purchase inspection. If AWD is needed, the Toyota Sienna is a better option. Overall, the Odyssey is a practical and dependable minivan for family life.

Reliable, flexible and well designed

I've owned two Odysseys over the past 20 years, with the 2020 being the one we currently own. The 2020 has proven to be just as reliable as our other Odyssey and the Honda Accords that we've owned. The 2020 Odyssey has a smooth ride, comfortable attractive interior. The Magic seating system makes this van even more flexible for hauling loads of kids and family, while being able to quickly change to hauling lots of cargo.

Disappointed on August 1, 2023

Never again

Was in the shop 5 or 6 times in the last 6 months with a popping noise in the front-end they replace everything in the front suspension, noise came back after a week then replaced sway bar links still didn't fix it, replaced bolts on the engine cradle and that seems to have fixed it. All covered under warranty. Then at 36576 miles the camera in the windshield went out while on vacation 1500 miles from home, found a dealer that was able to work it in and get the replacement camera. This camera controls the adaptive cruise control, front collision mitigation, lane keep assist, lane departure mitigation and auto high beam. I called honda corporate and after 2 days a representative called me and said there was nothing they would do as it was 2500 miles over the warranty and it's a car and cars breakdown. He told me to drive it 1500 miles back home and have the dealership at home repair it and they might be able to help cover the cost of $1300. I didn't want to drive that far without all the safety features working and he told me that that's on me. With the problems we've had I would never recommend the honda brand, thought they were more reliable that's why I bought it.

Never buying an Odyssey ever again

This was my 3rd minivan, all Odysseys. I had liked my 2 previous vans which was why I bought the 2020. But soon after I bought it, I started noticing lots of things I didn't like. First, they took away a safety feature that helped me when I was backing out of my driveway. Then, I realized the backup camera was not very good, so I had to pay extra careful attention when backing up, especially when it is sunny out. And this camera caused me to back into another car (which was not shown to me on my terrible camera) which was behind a tree. The alarms never went off that I was that close to the parked car, and I hit it, with my 3 little kids in the car, and now have a big dent on my trunk. Also, the vans mechanics are not good. Within a year of having it, whenever I would roll up a sliding door window from the drivers seat, the window would go up, but then start doing down again, repeatedly. The same thing with the sliding door on the drivers side. Whenever you would close it, it would close, and then open up again, and beeping the whole time. Long story short, don't buy this car, you'll regret it.

Honda Odyssey is Extremely Reliable

We have had 2002, 2004, and now have 2010 and 2020 Odyssey vans. The Odyssey is extremely reliable. With proper maintenance will last in excess of 200,000 miles. We sold the 2004 at 230,000+ miles, and it was still running great. The 2010 we have is approaching 170,000 miles. We are two 80-year-olds; we just like having plenty of space to carry things.

We bought it new and only have 1600 miles on it but thus far we're very pleased. While being very comfortable for everyone and roomy it's a very practical vehicle. Combine the comfort and ease of use, the safety features and overall quality that comes with the Honda brand it's tough to beat. After test driving the Toyota Sienna and the Kia Sedona, the Odyssey was the top pick for everyone. Taken it and a couple short road trips with the family and it performed above expectations. Very happy with the purchase.

Most reliable van I have ever owned.

Vehicle met all my needs and has lots of room. Odyssey is a great color and is very reliable. Very comfortable to ride in with the family.

Just bought it and am super in love

This van checked all the boxes. Has great space for 3 car seats, love that there's room to have grandparents ride with us if needed and easy to drive. So cozy!

The best minivan for our family

We loved our minivan. Well thought of and the features are amazing. You can't go wrong with Honda Odyssey! We used a Kia Sedona but it has safety issues so we decided to get a new Odyssey.

The most comfortable and quiet minivan.

The ex-l model has all of the comfort features and is a real pleasure to drive.I also get 21-23 mpg in town-real world mileage. My wife likes the heated seats.
