The Subaru Forester, a compact SUV, has been a popular choice for decades, known for its reliability and off-road capability. The 2022 model continues this legacy. It's a 5-door SUV, part of the fifth generation (2019-present). Key trims include Base, Premium, Sport, Wilderness, Limited, and Touring. Pricing typically ranges from the mid $20,000s to the low $30,000s. Its standard all-wheel drive and focus on safety make it stand out.
The Good

The 2022 Forester boasts impressive reliability and standard all-wheel drive, appealing to practical buyers seeking dependability in various weather conditions. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior offer a pleasant experience. While not a performance car, it offers adequate power. Its rugged design and available Wilderness trim evoke a sense of adventure.

The Bad

The 2022 Forester's acceleration can feel underwhelming to some, especially when fully loaded. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) can sometimes drone. Some owners have reported infotainment system glitches. While reliable overall, carefully inspect the CVT for any signs of unusual behavior during a test drive. Also, the exterior styling is considered bland by some.

What Problems Does the 2022 Subaru Forester Have?

While the 2022 Subaru Forester is generally reliable, some common issues have been reported. Infotainment system glitches, such as freezing or slow response times, are occasionally mentioned. Some owners have reported issues with the CVT, including hesitation or a "rubber-banding" feel. It's crucial to check the CVT's condition during a test drive, listening for unusual noises or vibrations.
Recalls can occur, so checking the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls for the specific VIN is essential. Long-term reliability is generally good, but consistent maintenance, especially regarding CVT fluid changes (as recommended by Subaru), is crucial for longevity. Earlier Forester models (pre-2019) had some concerns regarding excessive oil consumption in certain engines, but this is less of a concern for the 2022 model. However, monitoring oil levels is always a good practice. Software updates for the infotainment system can address some of the reported glitches. Some owners have also mentioned minor issues with the automatic emergency braking system, so ensuring the EyeSight system is properly calibrated is important.

How long will the 2022 Subaru Forester last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2022 Subaru Forester can easily reach 200,000 miles or more, providing 10-15 years of reliable service. Subarus are known for their longevity. Key to long-term durability is adhering to the recommended maintenance schedule, especially CVT fluid changes and regular oil changes. Potential weaknesses over time include wear and tear on suspension components, potential for CVT issues if not properly maintained, and degradation of rubber components like hoses and belts. Rust can be a concern in areas with heavy road salt usage, so regular washing and undercoating can help.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Subaru Forester comes standard with a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims feature an 8-inch touchscreen. The infotainment system can be slow to respond at times.
Standard driver-assistance features include Subaru's EyeSight system: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and pre-collision braking. Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are available on higher trims.
Optional features include a driver monitoring system (alerts the driver if they are drowsy or distracted), reverse automatic braking, and a Harman Kardon premium audio system.
The 2022 Forester received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). It earned a 5-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA and was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. These ratings reflect Subaru's commitment to safety. The robust safety features contribute significantly to the Forester's appeal.

2022 Subaru Forester Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2022 Subaru Forester ranged from approximately $25,000 for the base model to around $36,000 for the Touring trim. Current used market prices vary depending on condition, mileage, and trim level, but generally range from the low $20,000s to the low $30,000s.
The Forester holds its value relatively well due to its reputation for reliability and the popularity of the Subaru brand. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, trim level, and service history. Models with lower mileage and a clean accident history command higher prices. The Wilderness trim often holds its value even better due to its enhanced off-road capabilities.

2022 Subaru Forester Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Subaru Forester is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel economy is decent, but not class-leading. Maintenance costs are reasonable if adhering to the recommended schedule. Repairs can be more expensive than some competitors, especially for Subaru-specific parts. Long-term ownership costs are manageable due to the vehicle's reliability, but neglecting maintenance can lead to costly repairs down the line. Regular oil changes and CVT fluid maintenance are essential to keep the car running smoothly.

How Does the 2022 Subaru Forester Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Subaru Forester competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Nissan Rogue. In terms of reliability, the Forester is comparable to the RAV4 and CR-V, surpassing the Rogue. The Mazda CX-5 offers a more engaging driving experience, but the Forester has standard AWD.
The RAV4 offers a hybrid option, which the Forester lacks. The CR-V is known for its spacious interior. The Rogue has a more modern interior design. In terms of price, the Forester is generally competitive within the segment.
Alternatives to the Forester include:
* Toyota RAV4: Offers a hybrid option and strong reliability.
* Honda CR-V: Known for its spacious interior and fuel efficiency.
* Mazda CX-5: Provides a more sporty driving experience.
* Hyundai Tucson: Offers a long warranty and stylish design.
For buyers prioritizing standard AWD and a reputation for reliability, the Forester is a strong choice. If fuel efficiency is a top concern, the RAV4 Hybrid or CR-V Hybrid might be better options. For a more engaging driving experience, the Mazda CX-5 is worth considering.

Ranks #353 SUV

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Subaru Forester a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Subaru Forester is a solid choice for individuals and families seeking a reliable and safe compact SUV with standard all-wheel drive. It's particularly well-suited for those living in areas with inclement weather. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and priorities.
A used 2022 Forester can be a good value if properly maintained and thoroughly inspected. The Premium trim offers a good balance of features and price. If off-road capability is desired, the Wilderness trim is a standout option. New or used, ensure the CVT has been properly serviced. If acceleration and sporty handling are a priority, other options might be a better fit. Overall, the Forester offers a practical and dependable package.

Beyond Satisfied!

This is my third Subaru Forrester. I like the newer safety features and ease of handling. The size is perfect for me, not too small or too big! I would recommend if you’re looking for a midsize vehicle.

Happy Owner!

I purchased the 2023 Wilderness trim in August and I chose it because I live in a very snowy and mountainous area. I certainly needed an upgrade from my trusty 2wd, low-clearance hatchback. I can watch the season change with more peace of mind with its high clearance, AWD and features like Starlink and X-mode ready to step in when called upon. I’m a huge fan of the vehicle’s exterior styling and the interior feels luxurious and durable. The cabin is well-insulated from engine and road noise. One drawback is that the sound system lacks depth even with the base turned all the way up (I don’t have the Harmon Kardon stereo option). I’ve never owned a car with a sunroof before and I love letting in extra daylight and looking up at the cliffs and trees during stops so I can’t imagine life without it, now. Even the low beam headlights provide clear-as-day visibility on the darkest nights, but I’d be worried about blinding other drivers so I’d give more follow distance. Many reviewers seem dissatisfied with its acceleration, but it hasn’t felt underpowered to me and I drive a Chevy Suburban for work. It feels like I’m barely touching the accelerator to cruise up steep grades, but I’m a leisurely driver so my expectations differ. 🙂

Great vehicle

My only complaints are, it could use a little more power and a little less road noise. Otherwise, I'm very pleased with my Subaru Forester Touring.

Almost a perfect one

Bought a 22 Touring, the car is great, (I traded a 2019 RAV4 XSE hybrid, forester is just better built and a better quality vehicle by far). Pros: comfortable, safe, plenty of legroom and headroom for all, I have tall friends (6’4”/6’2”) and all have enough room), great visibility, things are where they need to be and where it makes sense, sound system is good and the eyesight system is a lot better than the Toyota system, also the ride quality is superior. Cons: lacks a few small things that should be there on a 2022 vehicle such as interior light auto shut off, if you leve your interior lights on by mistake these won’t auto shut off, it doesn’t have a wireless cell charger, or wireless apple play connection, also it should have a fast charger (USB-c).

Forester Happiness!

My wife just replaced her Honda CR-V EXL with a new 2022 Subaru Forester Wilderness. We absolutely love it! While the styling is a bit "boxy" for some, the functionality and outward visibility is top tier. And the Wilderness trim level has a substantially rugged appearance. The interior fit and finish is excellent. The standard AWD is a big plus. We opted for the Harmon Karden sound system package and the sound quality is incredible. We are now a two Subaru family as my ride is a 2020 Ascent.

Subaru Delivers Once More

This is our fourth Subaru. Just traded in my 2020 crystal white pearl 2020 Forester touring for the crystal green silica Forester touring. Love the new color. Looks great with the saddle brown interior. Have had nothing but enthusiastic compliments about its appearance. It drives really smoothly. All the features are very convenient and ergonomic. Combined with the Eyesight, they give you a real sense of safety. Driver visibility is very good.. The premium sound system really delivers. Mileage has been good in both Foresters. You can't go wrong with this vehicle!

Great value in a Wonderful SUV

I recently took delivery of a 2022 Subaru Forester Premium after waiting three months from ordering to arrival at my dealer. I have to say it was worth the wait. It is a wonderful SUV, quiet, very comfortable, with great road manners. I have seen comments about it's lack of power but I have not found that to be true at all. There is plenty of power for passing and entering the freeway. The CVT and engine work well together so that the car seems to get from one place to another effortlessly. I particularly like the design of the interior. The materials are top notch, there is plenty of variety in the design and in the way the various materials blend and interact. The seats are super comfortable. I am not a big fan of the material for the top of the dash - a sort of black, rubbery plastic, but it does cut down on any reflection from the dash to the windshield. All the switchgear work with ease and the function of the various buttons and knobs (so many of them !) are easy to understand and get used to. The radio, media, info screens, etc are a bit scattered with information repeated sometime in three different places, but it is all configurable so that, in the end, the driver can end up the the desired information in the proper place. What I like most: big sunroof, very secure feeling on the road without a single squeak or rattle, great handling, good gas mileage, quality materials, that Subaru "thing" that lets you know that a LOT of thought and care has gone into the design and execution of this car, and lastly, all the little things that seem to make the buying and owning of a Subaru special. What I think could be improved: Allow the driver to disable the engine stop/start permanantly, move the cup holders further toward the dash so that it not so awkward to pick up a hot cup of coffee, provide a better space for cell phones to both plug in and rest, forget the "piano black" plastic material anywhere in the car. (why do car manufacturers seem to think that this dust and fingerprint magnet is a good material for a car dash? Beats me. ) This might be the best car I have ever owned. Certainly it is the best for the money. A little over $28K gets you a basketful of features plus AWD that you would have to pay extra for in most other cars. And, in the Premium trim and above, you get that panoramic sunroof and all the safety features and vehicle intelligence options (almost) that you could want. With just about the best resale value right now, It's a good investment as well.
