The 2016 Nissan NV200 is a compact cargo van designed for small businesses and urban delivery. It debuted in the US in 2013. Its body style is a small, highly maneuverable cargo van. Key trims include the S and SV. The 2016 pricing ranged from around $21,000 to $23,000 when new. Its popularity stems from its fuel efficiency, compact size for navigating city streets, and relatively low price point compared to larger vans. It offers a practical solution for businesses needing cargo space without the bulk.
The Good

What Problems Does the 2016 Nissan NV200 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Nissan NV200 often revolve around the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission). Some owners have reported issues such as shuddering, slipping, or complete failure of the transmission, sometimes requiring costly repairs or replacements. While not consistently reported, this remains a significant concern for potential buyers.

Other common issues include problems with the air conditioning system, particularly reduced cooling capacity over time. Some owners have also noted issues with the electrical system, such as malfunctioning sensors or problems with the infotainment system.

Recalls related to the NV200 have included issues like potential fuel leaks, which could increase the risk of a fire. It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN against the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) database to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns mainly focus on the longevity of the CVT transmission. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes at recommended intervals, is crucial to mitigate potential problems. The relatively basic components and straightforward design of other systems generally contribute to reasonable reliability, but the CVT remains a primary point of concern.

How long will the 2016 Nissan NV200 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Nissan NV200 can reasonably provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Consistent oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires), and regular transmission servicing are crucial. The CVT transmission remains the primary long-term durability concern. Neglecting transmission maintenance or subjecting it to excessive strain (overloading, aggressive driving) will significantly shorten its lifespan. Body rust can also be a concern in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Paying attention to these potential weaknesses can contribute to a longer and more reliable service life.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Nissan NV200's tech features are fairly basic, reflecting its utilitarian purpose. Standard entertainment includes a CD player, auxiliary audio input, and a two-speaker sound system (S trim) or a six-speaker system (SV trim). The SV trim offered an optional NissanConnect system with a 5.8-inch touchscreen, navigation, and mobile app integration.

Driver-assistance features are limited. A rearview camera and rear parking sensors were optional on the SV trim, providing some assistance with maneuvering in tight spaces.

Standard safety features include:
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • Electronic stability control
  • Traction control
  • Front airbags
  • Side-impact airbags
  • Side curtain airbags

Crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) are available. The 2016 NV200 received mixed ratings. The small overlap front crash test was rated as "Marginal," while other crash tests yielded "Good" results. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) also provided crash test ratings, which should be consulted for a comprehensive assessment. It's important to note the relatively basic safety tech compared to newer vehicles.

2016 Nissan NV200 Prices and Market Value

The 2016 Nissan NV200 had a starting MSRP of around $21,000 for the S trim and approximately $22,000-$23,000 for the SV trim when new. Current used market prices typically range from $8,000 to $15,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation is significant, but it levels off after the initial few years. Factors affecting resale value include: mileage, overall condition (mechanical and cosmetic), service history, and geographic location. A well-maintained NV200 with lower mileage will command a higher resale price. The demand for small cargo vans in a given area also influences the value.

2016 Nissan NV200 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Nissan NV200 is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically lower compared to larger vans. Fuel efficiency is a strong point. Maintenance costs are generally affordable, with readily available parts. However, potential CVT transmission issues can lead to significant repair bills. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on maintenance habits and addressing potential issues promptly. Neglecting the CVT could make it costly in the long run. Overall, it's considered an affordable option if maintained properly.

How Does the 2016 Nissan NV200 Compare to Other Truck?

The 2016 Nissan NV200 competes with vans like the Ford Transit Connect and Ram ProMaster City. In terms of performance, the NV200 lags behind both the Transit Connect and ProMaster City, offering less horsepower and a less refined driving experience. The Transit Connect generally offers a more comfortable ride and slightly better handling. Feature-wise, the NV200 is fairly basic compared to its rivals, especially in the base trim. The Transit Connect offers more available tech and driver-assistance features. Reliability is a mixed bag. The NV200's CVT transmission can be a point of concern, while the Transit Connect has its own potential issues. The ProMaster City may offer slightly better overall reliability.

Price is where the NV200 often shines, typically being more affordable than its competitors, especially on the used market.

Alternatives: The Ford Transit Connect is a solid choice if a better driving experience and more features are desired. The Ram ProMaster City offers a bit more power and cargo space but may come at a higher price. If budget is a primary concern and basic functionality is sufficient, the NV200 is a reasonable option. However, consider the Transit Connect for a more well-rounded package.

The 2016 Nissan NV200 is ideal for small businesses or individuals needing a compact and fuel-efficient cargo van for urban environments. It's worth buying if budget is a primary concern and basic functionality is sufficient. Buying used offers the best value, but a thorough inspection is crucial, especially regarding the CVT transmission. Opting for the SV trim provides a few more creature comforts and available features like a backup camera. Consider the Ford Transit Connect if a more refined driving experience and more features are desired, but be prepared to pay a premium. Overall, the NV200 is a practical but basic work van that fulfills a specific niche.

Perfect AC van

I used to be a truck guy. My tools and cargo are safe, never get wet again. I will never go back to my gas guzzler. When I wear this one out I will definitely get another.

Best truck replacement

This car has been the best car for capacity. I am able to use it for any type of job and have extra room still. Its built to be converted. The small engine size is helped with a hill assist that helps with power when loaded to the brim. Its drive is smooth as a car and handles like one. The car is comfortable to sit and drive for full day. Overall it works for any style of work and fun.
