The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is a full-size SUV, part of the Tahoe's third generation (2007-2014). Known for its robust capabilities and spacious interior, it's available in LS, LT, and LTZ trims. New, it ranged roughly from $45,000 to $55,000. Its popularity stems from its ability to comfortably transport passengers and cargo while offering strong towing capacity, making it a versatile choice for families and those needing a workhorse vehicle.
The Good

The 2014 Tahoe offers strong V8 performance and towing capability, appealing to practical buyers needing a workhorse. Its comfortable and spacious interior with available luxury features caters to families seeking a refined ride. While not the most fuel-efficient, its reliability and proven track record provide peace of mind, enhancing its overall value.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 Tahoe include lower fuel economy compared to smaller SUVs. Some owners have reported issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, leading to oil consumption problems. Suspension components and electrical systems should also be inspected due to their age and potential wear.

What Problems Does the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe often revolve around the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system. This system, designed to improve fuel economy, can sometimes lead to excessive oil consumption and potential engine damage. Some owners have reported issues with the AFM lifters failing, requiring costly repairs. Other common problems include issues with the air conditioning system, specifically the compressor and blend door actuators. Suspension components, particularly the Autoride system (if equipped), can experience problems over time, requiring replacement of shocks and air compressors.
While specific recall data should be checked with the NHTSA database, some related recalls for similar model years involved issues with the airbags and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns often center around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for rust, especially in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. The electrical system can also be prone to issues as the vehicle ages, leading to problems with sensors and other electronic components. Regular maintenance and addressing issues promptly can help mitigate some of these long-term concerns.

How long will the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe can easily exceed 200,000 miles or 15 years of service. Diligent owners who follow recommended service schedules can see even longer lifespans. However, long-term durability is tied to addressing known weaknesses, such as the AFM system and potential suspension issues. Neglecting these areas can shorten the vehicle's lifespan. Rust, especially in colder climates, can also impact longevity. Regular fluid changes, proactive repairs, and rust prevention measures are crucial for maximizing the Tahoe's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe offers a decent array of built-in tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include OnStar, which provides automatic crash response and navigation assistance. Entertainment features include a six-speaker sound system (LS trim) with available upgrades to a Bose premium system (LT trim). Higher trims offer features like a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player.
Driver-assistance features are more limited compared to modern vehicles, but include available rear parking sensors, a rearview camera (LTZ trim), and blind-spot monitoring (LTZ trim). Safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, and a suite of airbags. Optional features include a navigation system, power liftgate, and heated seats.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe an overall safety rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should be checked directly on their website for specific crash test results. These features provided a reasonable level of safety and convenience for the time, making it a competitive choice in its segment.

2014 Chevrolet Tahoe Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe ranged from approximately $45,000 to $55,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim level, typically ranging from $15,000 to $30,000. The Tahoe has experienced considerable depreciation, but retains some value due to its towing capacity and passenger space. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, maintenance records, mileage, trim level (LTZ models tend to hold their value better), and geographic location. Vehicles in excellent condition with low mileage command higher prices.

2014 Chevrolet Tahoe Cost of Ownership

The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is generally considered costly to own long-term. Insurance costs can be moderate to high depending on driving record and location. Fuel consumption is high due to the large V8 engine. Maintenance costs are moderate, but repairs can be expensive, especially those related to the AFM system or suspension. Expect higher than average ownership costs compared to smaller SUVs or sedans. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate expensive repairs.

2014 Chevrolet Tahoe Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a LT with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe Compare to Other LT?

The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe competes with the Ford Expedition, Toyota Sequoia, and GMC Yukon (its corporate twin). In terms of performance, the Tahoe's 5.3L V8 is comparable to the Expedition's V8, but the Sequoia's V8 offers slightly more power. Feature-wise, the Tahoe provides a competitive set of amenities, although some rivals might offer more advanced technology in higher trims. Reliability is a mixed bag; the Tahoe has a decent track record, but some owners report AFM-related issues. The Sequoia generally enjoys a reputation for superior reliability.
Price-wise, the Tahoe typically falls in the middle of the pack. The Expedition and Yukon are often similarly priced, while the Sequoia can be slightly more expensive. As an alternative, the GMC Yukon offers similar features and performance with a slightly more upscale interior. The Toyota Sequoia is a compelling alternative for buyers prioritizing long-term reliability, albeit with a potentially higher initial purchase price. The Ford Expedition is another strong contender, offering comparable towing capacity and features. Consider your priorities – reliability, features, price – when making your decision.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe a Good LT?

The 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe is ideal for buyers needing a robust SUV for towing, hauling, and passenger space. It's worth buying if you prioritize these capabilities and find a well-maintained example. However, be prepared for higher fuel and maintenance costs. Consider a used Tahoe in LT or LTZ trim for a good balance of features and value. Have a mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchase, paying close attention to the AFM system and suspension components. If reliability is your top priority, explore alternatives like the Toyota Sequoia. A 2014 Tahoe is a capable but potentially costly choice; due diligence is key.

Very comfortable ride.

So far our new 2014 Tahoe LS has not disappointed us. We picked it up in Mesa, AZ and drove it over 400 miles to Las Cruces, NM. The ride is very comfortable, and the Tahoe will serve us well on our trips to St Louis University Hospital for cancer treatments every three months.
