Rating: 4.68
Based on 34 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2008 GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV, part of the second generation (2007-2014). It boasts a truck-based platform offering substantial towing capacity and passenger space. Key trims include SLE, SLT, and Denali. When new, prices ranged from approximately $35,000 to $50,000+. Its popularity stems from its blend of capability, comfort, and upscale features compared to some rivals, particularly in Denali trim. It offers a commanding presence and a reputation for durability.
The Good

The 2008 GMC Yukon offers strong performance thanks to its V8 engine options and impressive towing capacity (practical). It provides a comfortable ride and a spacious interior, especially appealing for families (emotional and practical). Its classic SUV design evokes a sense of ruggedness and capability (emotional). Some owners have reported issues with the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system leading to oil consumption. What Problems Does the 2008 GMC Yukon Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2008 GMC Yukon include excessive oil consumption, often linked to the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, where cylinders are deactivated to improve fuel economy. This can lead to piston ring issues and increased oil usage. Transmission problems, such as hard shifting or slipping, are also reported, especially at higher mileages.
Electrical issues, including problems with the instrument cluster, power windows, and door locks, are not uncommon. Some owners have reported issues with the stabilitrak system and ABS sensors.
Recalls for the 2008 Yukon have addressed issues such as faulty fuel pumps and potential fire hazards. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for specific recall information related to your VIN.
Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the AFM system, transmission longevity, and rust, particularly in areas with harsh winters. Routine maintenance, including regular oil changes and transmission fluid flushes, is crucial to mitigate these issues. Some owners proactively disable the AFM system to prevent oil consumption problems. Early models of this generation Yukon (2007-2008) seem to have more frequently reported AFM issues than later years.

How long will the 2008 GMC Yukon last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 GMC Yukon can reasonably achieve 200,000 to 250,000 miles. Years of service heavily depend on the owner's care, driving habits, and environment. Consistent oil changes, transmission servicing, and addressing repairs promptly are crucial.
Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses emerge over time. As mentioned before, rust can be problematic, especially in colder climates. Suspension components, such as shocks and struts, may require replacement. The AFM system remains a potential long-term concern, and regular monitoring of oil levels is recommended. Properly maintained, these vehicles can provide many years of reliable service, but neglect can lead to costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 GMC Yukon's built-in tech, entertainment, and safety features vary depending on the trim level.
Tech and Entertainment: Standard features include a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offer features like a Bose premium sound system, rear-seat entertainment system with DVD player, and navigation system. Connectivity options were limited compared to modern vehicles, but OnStar was available.
Driver-Assistance: Driver-assistance features were relatively basic for the time. Rear parking sensors were available on higher trims. Electronic Stability Control (StabiliTrak) was standard, enhancing handling and stability.
Safety Features: Standard safety features include antilock brakes (ABS), front and side airbags, and traction control. Optional features included side curtain airbags for all three rows. Tire pressure monitoring system was also available.
Crash-Test Ratings: The 2008 GMC Yukon generally received good crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). However, specific ratings varied based on the type of crash test. Check the NHTSA and IIHS websites for detailed crash-test results for this model year.
Optional features available on higher trims included power-adjustable pedals, remote start, and heated front seats, adding to the convenience and comfort.

2008 GMC Yukon Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 GMC Yukon ranged in price from approximately $35,000 for a base SLE model to over $50,000 for a fully loaded Denali. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from approximately $5,000 to $15,000, potentially higher for exceptionally well-maintained examples.
The Yukon has depreciated considerably, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (mechanical and cosmetic), trim level (Denali models hold their value better), and whether it has a clean title. Regular maintenance records also increase resale value.

2008 GMC Yukon Cost of Ownership

The 2008 GMC Yukon is generally considered costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are moderate, reflecting its size and potential repair costs. Fuel costs are high due to its poor fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially as the vehicle ages. Potential issues like AFM problems and transmission issues can lead to expensive repairs. While basic maintenance is reasonable, unexpected repairs can quickly escalate the total cost of ownership. It's not an economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2008 GMC Yukon Insurance

Insurance for a 2008 GMC Yukon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2008 GMC Yukon Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 GMC Yukon competed with full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia. In terms of performance, the Yukon offered comparable engine options and towing capacity to its rivals. Feature-wise, the Yukon offered a good balance, but the Denali trim stood out with its more luxurious appointments.
Reliability is where the Yukon faced some challenges compared to the Toyota Sequoia, which generally enjoys a better reputation for long-term reliability. The Ford Expedition offered similar capabilities and features but might have a slightly lower perceived quality in some areas.
Price-wise, the Yukon was typically competitive within its class, although Denali trims commanded a premium.
Alternatives to consider include:
* Toyota Sequoia: For superior reliability (though potentially higher initial cost).
* Chevrolet Tahoe: Offers similar features and performance at potentially a slightly lower price point.
* Ford Expedition: A comparable American SUV with a focus on towing and passenger space.
If reliability is a top priority, the Sequoia is a better alternative. If budget is a primary concern, the Tahoe might be a suitable alternative. The Expedition is a similar option with comparable features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 GMC Yukon a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2008 GMC Yukon is ideal for buyers needing a large SUV with substantial towing capacity and passenger space, especially those who appreciate a classic truck-based SUV feel. Whether it's worth buying depends on the price and condition. A well-maintained example at a reasonable price can be a good value.
It's best to buy used, given its age. A Denali trim offers more features but commands a higher price. Carefully inspect any potential purchase for signs of AFM-related oil consumption, transmission issues, and rust. Budget for potential repairs. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Toyota Sequoia. If you need a capable SUV and can find a well-maintained Yukon at a good price, it can still be a worthwhile purchase.

Like driving a couch down the road

I was looking for a tow vehicle that had a very high capacity without having to buy a pickup truck. I like the idea of having an enclosed cabin for security and was considering a Ford Excursion and the Cadillac Escalade. The Ford was good but I thought the capacity for what I wanted was a bit low. I took several Escalades out for test rides and liked them a lot but the prices were higher than I wanted to go. Then I found the GMC Yukon Denali and it is essentially an Escalade without the big buck ticket. I found one for the right price and took it for a ride. It was loaded and went down the road like you were sitting on a couch. Not only that but it has plenty of power with 403 HP and a six speed automatic and towing capacity of 8800 pounds. It fit the bill perfectly and I bought it that day.

We debated between a Lincoln navigator, Cadillac Escalade and the GMC Yukon. For comfort stability and durability we love the Yukon.
