The 2012 Nissan Pathfinder is a mid-size SUV offering seating for seven. It's known for its rugged construction and off-road capabilities, stemming from its truck-based heritage. The 2012 model year was part of the Pathfinder's third generation. Key trims included the S, SV, and LE. Pricing ranged from around $28,000 to $35,000 when new. Its blend of utility, space, and available four-wheel drive made it a popular choice for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2012 Pathfinder offers a strong V6 engine providing capable performance. It boasts a comfortable ride and spacious interior, appealing to families. Its truck-based design gives it a rugged appeal and decent towing capacity. The Pathfinder presents a good value proposition for those seeking a capable and dependable SUV.

The Bad

Fuel economy is a known weakness; the Pathfinder isn't the most efficient SUV. Some owners have reported issues with the transmission and electrical components. The interior materials aren't as luxurious as some competitors. Rust can be a concern in regions with harsh winters, so inspecting the undercarriage is essential.

What Problems Does the 2012 Nissan Pathfinder Have?

The 2012 Nissan Pathfinder has some frequently reported problems. A notable concern is transmission issues, with some owners experiencing slipping or rough shifting. Electrical problems, particularly with sensors and the audio system, have also been reported. Rust, especially in areas with road salt, is a common concern, affecting the frame and undercarriage components. Some owners have mentioned issues with the exhaust manifold cracking. Before purchasing, a thorough inspection for rust and a test drive to evaluate transmission performance are crucial.

Recalls for the 2012 Pathfinder can be checked on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website using the vehicle's VIN. Long-term reliability can be affected by neglecting regular maintenance, especially fluid changes. Pay close attention to scheduled maintenance intervals for the transmission and cooling system. While the engine is generally robust, keeping up with oil changes is vital to prevent potential issues. Addressing small problems promptly can help avoid more significant and costly repairs down the road.

How long will the 2012 Nissan Pathfinder last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder can realistically last for 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching 15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting fluid changes or ignoring minor repairs can significantly shorten its lifespan. The chassis and suspension components are generally durable, but rust can compromise their integrity over time, especially in colder climates. Regularly checking and addressing rust can extend the vehicle's life. The engine is typically reliable if properly maintained; however, transmission issues can arise with age and high mileage.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Nissan Pathfinder's built-in tech and entertainment features were fairly basic for its time. Standard features included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and auxiliary audio input. Higher trims (SV and LE) offered an upgraded audio system, available navigation, and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles. It included standard features like anti-lock brakes (ABS) and stability control. Higher trims might have included features like rear parking sensors. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available.

Safety features included standard front and side airbags, as well as side-curtain airbags for all three rows. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) crash test ratings for the 2012 Pathfinder varied. It generally received good scores in frontal and side crash tests. Information on specific rollover ratings should be verified on the NHTSA website using the vehicle's VIN. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also provided crash test ratings, which can be consulted for a more comprehensive assessment of the vehicle's safety performance.

2012 Nissan Pathfinder Prices and Market Value

The 2012 Nissan Pathfinder had a starting MSRP of around $28,000 when new, with higher trims reaching $35,000. Current used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $14,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to the vehicle's age and the availability of newer, more technologically advanced SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, mileage, service history, and whether it has 4WD. Vehicles with lower mileage and a clean service history command higher prices.

2012 Nissan Pathfinder Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Nissan Pathfinder is moderately costly to own. Insurance costs are average for a mid-size SUV. Fuel economy is below average, increasing running costs. Maintenance can be relatively affordable if routine services are followed. However, potential transmission issues and rust repairs can lead to significant expenses. Long-term, the Pathfinder isn't the most economical choice, especially considering its fuel consumption and potential repair needs associated with older vehicles.

2012 Nissan Pathfinder Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Nissan Pathfinder Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2012 Nissan Pathfinder competes with the Toyota 4Runner, Honda Pilot, and Chevrolet Traverse. Compared to the 4Runner, the Pathfinder offers a smoother on-road ride but lacks the 4Runner's legendary off-road capability and reliability. Against the Pilot, the Pathfinder offers a slightly more rugged feel but falls short in terms of fuel efficiency and interior space. The Traverse provides more passenger room and better fuel economy but lacks the Pathfinder's towing capacity.

In terms of reliability, the Toyota 4Runner generally outperforms the Pathfinder. The Honda Pilot offers a more balanced package of reliability, fuel economy, and passenger space. For those prioritizing off-road capability and longevity, the 4Runner is a better choice. If fuel efficiency and interior space are paramount, the Pilot or Traverse might be more suitable. However, the Pathfinder offers a decent balance of features and performance at a potentially lower price point on the used market. It's worth considering if you need moderate towing capacity and don't prioritize fuel economy.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Nissan Pathfinder a Good Wagon?

The 2012 Nissan Pathfinder is ideal for buyers seeking a capable and relatively affordable used SUV with decent towing capacity. It's worth considering if you prioritize a rugged design and don't mind the lower fuel economy. However, a pre-purchase inspection is crucial to check for rust and transmission issues. Opting for a well-maintained SV or LE trim can provide more features and comfort. It's generally not recommended to buy this vehicle new now, given its age. If reliability and fuel economy are top priorities, exploring alternatives like the Honda Pilot or Toyota 4Runner would be prudent.

Bought it new in 2012, never a problem

I have used this vehicle for towing, transporting groups. I just hit 100,00 miles and i'm keeping it. Never had a problem. 8 years and I hope to get 8 years more. Glad I bought it. Every time I bring it in for service, they offer me to trade it in at a good price and I say no.

Rugged and Reliable. A pleasure to drive.

This vehicle has been one of the best that I've owned. Minimal maintenance other than normal service has been required. Runs and drives great and have no doubt it will run for many years to come. Does well on and off road and pulling a trailer. It's an excellent all around vehicle. One of the last SUVs of it's kind.

The best suv that I have owned so far

This suv is ideal for long trips, everyday use and whatever you need it for. The only thing that I can say is that it is not that great with gas. Overall I am so glad that I purchased this vehicle. Other trucks may be fancier but this one is great with cargo space and legroom.
