The Hyundai Santa Fe, a mid-size crossover SUV, has been a popular choice for families since its introduction in 2001. The 2022 model continues this trend, offering a blend of practicality, comfort, and value. Available trims include SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy. Its popularity stems from its spacious interior, advanced technology, striking design, and competitive pricing, generally ranging from around $28,000 to $42,000. It's known for its bold styling and available hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains.
The Good

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe boasts a comfortable ride, stylish design, and user-friendly technology, appealing to emotional buyers. Practically, it offers good fuel efficiency (especially with the hybrid), a spacious interior, and a strong warranty. Performance is adequate for daily driving, and Hyundai's reputation for reliability is steadily improving, further enhancing its value proposition.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe include some engine options lacking enthusiastic acceleration and potentially lower resale values compared to some competitors. Some owners have reported minor infotainment glitches. Be sure to research specific engine issues and service bulletins before purchasing, and check the vehicle's history for any past recalls or reported problems. The base engine can feel underpowered for a fully loaded vehicle.

What Problems Does the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Have?

While the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is generally considered reliable, some potential issues have been reported. Some owners have mentioned minor infotainment system glitches, such as screen freezes or slow response times. There have been some reports of issues with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting or hesitation.

It's important to check for any outstanding recalls before purchasing. Hyundai has issued recalls on other models for engine-related issues (connecting rod bearing failure), which *could* potentially affect the Santa Fe, although less frequently reported for the 2022 model year specifically. Regular oil changes with the correct oil viscosity are crucial to avoid any potential issues.

Long-term reliability can be affected by adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule. Skipping or delaying maintenance can lead to problems down the road. Check for any service bulletins related to the engine or transmission. Some owners have reported issues with the hybrid system in earlier model years of the Santa Fe Hybrid; while improvements have been made, it's still worth researching. Pre-purchase inspections by a trusted mechanic are always recommended, especially for used vehicles, to identify any hidden problems before they become costly repairs.

How long will the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe last?

With regular maintenance, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-13 years. Proper maintenance, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and inspections, significantly extends its lifespan.

Potential long-term weaknesses include wear and tear on suspension components, potential for increased oil consumption in higher-mileage engines, and the lifespan of the hybrid battery (if applicable). Regular inspections can help identify and address these issues early on, preventing more significant problems.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe comes well-equipped with technology. Standard features include an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Higher trims offer a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a premium Harman Kardon audio system.

Driver-assistance features are comprehensive, including standard forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping assist, and driver attention warning. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view monitor. The available Hyundai Digital Key allows you to use your smartphone to unlock and start the vehicle.

Safety features are abundant, with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes as standard. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe received excellent crash-test ratings from the IIHS, earning a "Top Safety Pick" designation. The NHTSA also awarded it a 5-star overall safety rating. These ratings reflect the vehicle's strong performance in crash tests and its advanced safety features.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe had a starting MSRP around $28,000, with higher trims reaching upwards of $42,000. Current used market prices range from approximately $22,000 to $35,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level.

Depreciation is moderate, with the Santa Fe holding its value reasonably well compared to some competitors. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, accident history, and the presence of desirable features like the turbo engine, all-wheel drive, and advanced technology packages. Maintaining a clean title and service records positively impacts resale.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is generally considered economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel economy is good, especially with the hybrid options. Maintenance costs are also reasonable, with Hyundai offering a competitive warranty. Regular maintenance is crucial to keep repair costs down.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Insurance

Insurance for a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe competes with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, and Mazda CX-5. In terms of price, the Santa Fe is generally competitive, offering good value for the money. The RAV4 and CR-V are known for their reliability and strong resale value, while the Santa Fe offers a more stylish design and potentially more advanced technology features in some trims.

Performance-wise, the Mazda CX-5 offers a sportier driving experience, while the Santa Fe's turbo engine provides adequate power. The Rogue offers a comfortable ride and a fuel-efficient engine. The RAV4 Prime (plug-in hybrid) offers superior fuel economy to the Santa Fe plug-in hybrid.

If reliability and resale value are top priorities, the RAV4 or CR-V might be better choices. If you prioritize a stylish design, advanced technology, and a comfortable ride at a competitive price, the Santa Fe is a strong contender. The Kia Sorento, being a corporate cousin to the Santa Fe, is a similar alternative offering a bit more space with an optional third row. The Subaru Outback is another alternative, offering standard all-wheel drive and a rugged appeal.

I've owned about 20 new vehicles and sold cars for 22

I've owned about 20 new vehicles and sold cars for 22 years, did a ton on research and ended up with the Caligraphy, it gives you so many features I wanted for a reasonable price. The engine is great and has plenty of power, great stereo, great highway cruiser as well. I have 32k miles, Hyundai has covered all my maintenance, and no warranty claims so far. Great Value! I have normally owned Toyota and Honda but wanted some features they either didn't have or I would have had to go to Lexus or Acura and pay way more for what I wanted.

Love my Santa Fe

This is my First time ever buying a Hyundai I sold a Acura RDX and purchased the Hyundai Santa Fe. I have no complaints. My Acura had everything in it and so do my Santa Fe. The difference is my Santa Fe is very comfortable and I really love it. As of now I have no complaints.

Don't buy it

My engine is not reliable, I got the engine light fixed twice and now have a transmission problem. It is a 2.5 NA with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The first time it got all error codes on and they said nothing happened. The second time is when the engine lights on and drives rough, dumping me in the middle of 405. The tow to the shop takes 2 weeks with no loaner car. The third transmission problem just happened yesterday night, with higher RPM and no power to the wheels, I pulled over to the highway exit and sent a tow truck to my dealer to fix it. Also, on a 2-degree temperature day, the horn with not working, takes them a week to fix it. I didn't even mention with unstable Android Auto and Apple Carplay, with poor interior quality. The only thing that I like about this car is the off-road ability. As a city SUV, it can bring me to some rough road conditions with no issues. But the engine and transmission need to be improved!!!

Love my 2022 Santa Fe PHEV.

Very comfortable, very solid feeling, love my Santa Fe PHEV, around town get about 88 mp gallon, often much more. Some controls confusing, especially heat/AC; buttons and dials would be better than touch screen. Would like forward drive gear button to be in front with rear behind, a safety issue.

Very good with few issues.

We have had the 2022 Santa Fe Calligraphy for one year and have been very satisfied for the most part. We learned early on that a front seat passenger can not use a seat pad and have the passenger seat air bag light go off. We met with a regional customer service advisor at the dealership and were told all new cars are that way. It's unfortunate if you happen to be under 5' and want to sit higher. Now that I know that, I am sorry not to have checked this before we purchased. Now that I do know I will consider this at my next purchase. Only three other issues, terrible gas mileage 22-24 mpg, occasional failure of the doors to unlock without pressing the key fob and street noise. As far as comfort is concerned, we have been happy with the ride and handling.

2022 Santa Fe SEL Premium

I decided to try Hyundai after my beloved Traverse died at 91k miles right after my extended warranty had ended. Hyundai's built in 10 year warranty is a huge plus. I've had this car almost a year and overall I like it. It's very good looking, comfortable and roomy. All the controls are user friendly and well thought out. It's important to me to have easy access to my controls while driving. Gas mileage is amazing. I love the panoramic sunroof. Dealer customer service is excellent so far. There are a few things I don't like. My car is fully loaded and has almost too much technology but no memory drivers seat which is annoying every time my husband messes up my seat position. Also my door is supposed to unlock when I put my hand on the handle but it's temperamental and doesn't always work. When I am highway driving the smart cruise is great but it automatically turns on the drive assist and I hate it. I can turn it off but it comes back on every time I reset the cruise. The dealer said there's no disabling this feature. The biggest thing it's lacking is power. It should have a bigger engine or every trim level should come with the turbo option not just the limited. I wish I had gotten the turbo. Thankfully it has sport mode to get up hills and accelerate when needed. It has some minor quirks but all in all it's a nice car. My husband gets a lot of rentals for work trips and says my car is nicer than every brand of rental he has had including Toyota. You also get a lot more for your money but I'm glad I leased it so I can trade it for a Palisade. That seems to have everything the Santa Fe is lacking.
