The 2009 Mazda CX-7 is a compact crossover SUV that blended sporty handling with practicality. Produced from 2007 to 2012, it offered a compelling alternative to more traditional SUVs. Key trims included the i SV, i Sport, s Touring, and s Grand Touring. New, it ranged from approximately $21,000 to $30,000. Its responsive turbocharged engine and sleek design made it popular among drivers seeking a more engaging driving experience than other crossovers offered.
The Good

The 2009 Mazda CX-7 boasts responsive handling and a powerful turbocharged engine for an engaging driving experience (emotional). It offers a comfortable interior with ample space for passengers and cargo (practical). While not the most fuel-efficient, its relatively affordable price and stylish design made it a good value (practical/emotional).

The Bad

What Problems Does the 2009 Mazda CX-7 Have?

The 2009 Mazda CX-7 has several frequently reported problems. The most significant is turbocharger failure, often due to oil leaks and inadequate lubrication. This issue is more prevalent in earlier model years but can still affect the 2009 version. High oil consumption is another common complaint, potentially leading to engine damage if not monitored and addressed. The 2.3L turbo engine is particularly susceptible to these oil-related issues.

Recalls for the 2009 CX-7 include issues related to corrosion of the front suspension lower arm, which could lead to failure and increase the risk of a crash. It's crucial to verify that any used CX-7 has had all applicable recalls addressed. Long-term reliability is a concern due to these engine and suspension issues. Rust can also be a problem, particularly in areas with harsh winters and road salt. Regular maintenance, including frequent oil changes and inspections, is essential to mitigate these risks. Issues with the variable valve timing (VVT) actuator have also been reported, potentially leading to engine noise and performance problems.

How long will the 2009 Mazda CX-7 last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2009 Mazda CX-7 can reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or provide 12-15 years of service. However, neglecting regular oil changes and addressing issues like turbocharger leaks will significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is primarily affected by the turbocharger and potential for high oil consumption. The automatic transmission is generally reliable if properly maintained. Rust can become a significant weakness, particularly in regions with salted roads. Consistent care and timely repairs are crucial for maximizing longevity.

This car is a complete joke I will never own a Mazda again my 2009 cx7 mazda that I brought second hand with low kilometres I thought mazda was a great car as my first car was a mazda rx3 coupe 1974 it was a great car so I thought a newer one would be great aswell but I lost out when the timing chain went the oil was contaminated and before that the car would just stop in the middle of the road anyway this car left me without a car because the motor was completely gone once the timing chain came off and all I can see is constant complaints about this car exactly the same problems as what happened. I feel completely let down by mazda the car left me without a car and out of pocket 8 thousand and I had just had a baby boy and I thought it was a reliable car . I will never deal with or buy a mazda again they are nothing but a rip-off and don't give you a safe reliable car never again .
Debbie C
Our Mazda CX-7, with 57,000 miles on it, experienced the same sludge build up resulting in a turbo blowing out, timing chain stretching and VVT needing replacement, as thousands of other CX-7 owners have also experienced. With the original warranty and extended warranty still in place, Mazda denied all service claims stating "poor vehicle maintenance"--as they have with all the other CX-7 owners. In speaking with Mazda technicians, they stated to me that there is a problem with the oil cooled turbo that Mazda refuses to admit to because it will result in a huge recall. Mazda needs to be held accountable for their poor design on these cars and stop putting the blame on consumers.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2009 Mazda CX-7 offered a reasonable array of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features included power windows and locks, air conditioning, and an AM/FM/CD audio system. Higher trims (Touring and Grand Touring) added features like leather upholstery, a sunroof, automatic climate control, and a Bose audio system. An optional navigation system was also available.

In terms of safety, the CX-7 came standard with anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, and front, side, and curtain airbags. Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, with no advanced systems like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) varied. The CX-7 performed well in frontal offset and side-impact tests, earning "Good" ratings. However, roof strength was rated as "Acceptable." The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the CX-7 four stars for overall frontal crash protection and five stars for side crash protection. These ratings are respectable for its class and era.

2009 Mazda CX-7 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2009 Mazda CX-7 ranged from approximately $21,000 to $30,000 depending on the trim and options. As of today, used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $9,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. The CX-7 has experienced significant depreciation due to its age, potential reliability issues (turbocharger problems), and fuel economy compared to newer vehicles. Lower mileage, excellent maintenance records, and absence of rust can improve resale value, but overall, depreciation is substantial.

2009 Mazda CX-7 Cost of Ownership

The 2009 Mazda CX-7 is generally considered moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are typical for its class. Fuel economy is below average, increasing running costs. Maintenance can be expensive, particularly if the turbocharger requires repair or replacement. Addressing oil consumption issues and potential rust also contribute to higher long-term expenses. Repairs, especially those related to the turbocharger, can be significant. Overall, it's not the most economical choice due to potential maintenance needs and fuel consumption.

2009 Mazda CX-7 Insurance

Insurance for a 2009 Mazda CX-7 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2009 Mazda CX-7 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

Compared to rivals like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Ford Escape, the 2009 Mazda CX-7 offered a sportier driving experience with its turbocharged engine and responsive handling. However, it lagged behind in fuel economy and reliability. The CR-V and RAV4 are known for their superior reliability and fuel efficiency, making them more practical choices for many buyers. The Ford Escape offered a wider range of engine options but didn't match the CX-7's sporty feel.

In terms of features, the CX-7 was competitive, but its infotainment system was less advanced than some rivals. Price-wise, it was generally comparable.

Alternatives to consider include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 for their reliability and fuel economy. The Mazda CX-5 (later model years) provides a similar sporty driving experience with improved fuel efficiency and reliability. If performance is a priority, a used Acura RDX (with its turbocharged engine) could be another option, though potentially more expensive to maintain.

Ranks #4 Wagon

Final Verdict: Is the 2009 Mazda CX-7 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2009 Mazda CX-7 is ideal for drivers who prioritize a sporty driving experience and stylish design over ultimate reliability and fuel economy. It's worth buying *used* if you find one in excellent condition with well-documented maintenance history, especially regarding turbocharger service. Look for the 2.5L non-turbocharged engine for potentially better reliability, although it lacks the turbo's punch. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is essential to assess the turbocharger, oil consumption, and suspension for any potential issues. Be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs compared to more reliable competitors.

Worst car ever made!

I've had this car for 4 years and I bet I've had it in the shop more than I've driven it, one thing after another after another. AC has gone out 6 times now. The turbo just went out last year, and now carmax cannot find out why my check engine light won't go off, and I have the extended warranty. Ridiculous.
