The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette continues the legacy of America's iconic sports car. Offered in coupe, convertible, and Z06 body styles, the 2012 model year falls within the C6 generation (2005-2013). Key trims include the base Corvette, Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1. The 2012 model's original MSRP ranged from approximately $50,000 to over $110,000 for the top-tier ZR1. It's popular for its blend of performance, relative affordability (compared to European rivals), and distinctive American styling.
The Good

The 2012 Corvette boasts impressive performance and strong reliability. Emotional Appeal: Head-turning design, thrilling acceleration, open-top driving (convertible). Practical Appeal: Relatively comfortable ride for a sports car, decent fuel efficiency (especially base models), and good value compared to European competitors, making it a sensible choice for performance enthusiasts.

The Bad

Weaknesses of the 2012 Corvette include interior plastics that can feel cheap, especially compared to newer models and competitors. Some owners have reported issues with the harmonic balancer on certain engines. Early C6 models could have issues with the column lock. Potential buyers should also inspect for signs of wear on the seats and carpets.

What Problems Does the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Have?

The 2012 Corvette, like other C6 models, has some frequently reported problems. The harmonic balancer is a known weakness, particularly in higher-performance models like the Z06, and should be inspected for wobble or separation. Early C6 Corvettes (2005-2007) had issues with the steering column lock, which could prevent the car from starting. While a recall addressed this issue, it's still worth verifying that the fix was applied. Some owners have reported problems with the active handling system and traction control.
Another area to inspect is the condition of the seats, particularly the leather upholstery, as it can show wear and tear over time. Targa top models can experience leaks, so check the seals for damage. While the C6 is generally considered reliable, regular maintenance and attention to these potential problem areas are crucial for long-term ownership. Some owners have also reported issues with the fuel level sensor, resulting in inaccurate readings. There haven't been any major recalls specifically targeting the 2012 model year, but it's always advisable to check the NHTSA website for any outstanding recalls based on the VIN.

How long will the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 Corvette can easily exceed 150,000 miles or more. Many owners report reaching 200,000 miles with regular servicing. The LS3 engine, found in base and Grand Sport models, is known for its durability. Long-term durability hinges on consistent oil changes, coolant flushes, and transmission fluid changes. Weaknesses over time can include wear on suspension components, deterioration of weather stripping, and potential issues with electronic systems. Cars driven hard or tracked frequently will naturally require more frequent maintenance and may experience wear on brakes, clutches, and tires.

I have a 2010 grand sport, in torch red. This car by far is amazing, what a head turner and amazing in every way. Best looking sports car, very comfortable, every option available, looks amazing, and if I had money I would buy another one it is super reliable. 2012 Corvette, perfect inside and out. Cyber Gray Metallic. Drives like a Vette should! Handles great on straight or curved roads, and smooth on highway.

Not the fastest car on the block but it sure does sound and look great. Head-turner. Very few issues, and maintenance is very reasonable. I would strongly recommend purchasing a Vette.

Corvette
I bought a 1998 corvette a month ago & they promised to get me a missing dimmer knob & I still don't have it & Jesse is saying they cant get me 1 because they can't just buy the knob they have to buy the whole part. Ok well he is saying he can get me the part I was promised but chooses not to! I spent over $15,000! & I can't get the simple dimmer knob I was promised! This is just poor & bad business! I call & I cant anyone who is not busy or gone for the day! Worst customer service ever!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Corvette offers a reasonable set of tech and safety features for its time. Standard features include a Bose audio system, dual-zone climate control, and keyless entry. The optional navigation system features a touchscreen display. Entertainment options include a CD player, satellite radio, and auxiliary audio input.
Driver-assistance features are limited compared to modern cars, but include antilock brakes, traction control, and stability control. Safety features comprise front airbags and side-impact airbags. Higher trim levels, like the ZR1, include performance traction management.
Optional features include a head-up display (HUD) that projects information onto the windshield and heated seats. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS are limited, but the Corvette generally performs well in frontal and side-impact tests. The convertible version may have slightly lower roof crush resistance. Overall, the 2012 Corvette focuses more on performance than cutting-edge technology, but offers adequate safety and convenience features for a sports car of its era.

2012 Chevrolet Corvette Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Corvette ranged from around $50,000 for the base model to over $110,000 for the ZR1. Current used market prices vary widely depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to pay anywhere from $25,000 to $60,000 or more.
Depreciation has been significant, especially for base models. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and trim level. Z06 and ZR1 models tend to hold their value better due to their higher performance and exclusivity. Low mileage and well-maintained examples command a premium.

2012 Chevrolet Corvette Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2012 Corvette can be moderate to high, depending on driving history and location. Fuel costs vary with driving style and engine choice. The base Corvette offers reasonable fuel economy, while the ZR1 can be thirsty. Maintenance costs are average for a sports car. Repairs can be expensive, especially for specialized parts on Z06 and ZR1 models. Long-term ownership costs are moderate if properly maintained, but can escalate with neglect. Overall, it's not the most economical car to own, but manageable for enthusiasts.

How Does the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2012 Corvette's key rivals included the Porsche 911, BMW M3, and Nissan GT-R. Performance: The Corvette offers comparable or superior horsepower at a lower price point. The ZR1 rivals supercars in acceleration. Features: The German rivals offer more refined interiors and advanced technology. The GT-R boasts all-wheel-drive grip. Reliability: The Corvette is generally more reliable than the GT-R and on par with or slightly better than the BMW. Porsche tends to have better reliability ratings. Price: The Corvette significantly undercuts the Porsche 911 and Nissan GT-R in price, making it a performance bargain.
Alternatives: A used Porsche 911 offers a more prestigious badge and refined driving experience, albeit at a higher cost. The Nissan GT-R delivers stunning all-weather performance. The BMW M3 provides a more balanced blend of performance and practicality. Ultimately, the Corvette's blend of performance, value, and American heritage makes it a compelling choice. If interior quality and brand prestige are paramount, the Porsche or BMW might be better choices.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Chevrolet Corvette a Good Coupe?

The 2012 Chevrolet Corvette is ideal for enthusiasts seeking high performance and iconic American sports car styling at a relatively affordable price. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, if you prioritize performance and don't require the most luxurious interior. Consider a Grand Sport or Z06 for enhanced performance. A pre-purchase inspection is crucial to identify potential issues. Evaluate your needs carefully – if you need all-weather capability, a GT-R might be a better choice. For a more refined experience, consider a used Porsche 911. Overall, a well-maintained 2012 Corvette offers a thrilling driving experience.

Beauty beyond compare to other vehicle!

Other than some minor problems from used automobiles my 2nd Corvette which was a basic 1997 had over 500, 000 miles on it. Wish I could afford the 2019 Corvette ZR1 I drive it. I buy to drive even during the pandemic. I am from Rock Hill, SC and I drove my last Corvette to Las Vegas, NV and Back. Immaculate driving exotic car!

Most fun car I have ever owned

This car was a bucket list purchase. Not being satisfied with stock horsepower, and having money to burn, I supercharged the thing. Wow !!!! When you want to move fast, the car throws you into the seatback and takes off. Very stable and easy to control. Too much fun
