The 2002 GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV, part of the second generation (2000-2006). It's known for its spacious interior, powerful engine options, and truck-like capabilities. Key trims include SLE and SLT. Pricing in 2002 ranged approximately from $30,000 to $40,000. Its popularity stems from its blend of utility, comfort, and reliability, making it a popular choice for families and those needing towing capacity. Its robust design and available four-wheel drive also contributed to its appeal.
The Good

The 2002 GMC Yukon offers a compelling blend of advantages. Practically, it provides strong performance with capable V8 engines and significant towing capacity. It's known for its relative reliability and comfortable ride. Emotionally, the Yukon offers a feeling of safety and security, along with a commanding presence on the road. It represents a solid value proposition for those needing a large, capable SUV.

The Bad

Known weaknesses of the 2002 GMC Yukon include potential issues with the automatic transmission, particularly with higher mileage. What Problems Does the 2002 GMC Yukon Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2002 GMC Yukon often involve the automatic transmission. Slipping, hard shifts, and complete failures are noted, particularly in vehicles with higher mileage or those that haven't received regular transmission fluid changes. The ABS system can also experience issues, with reports of malfunctioning sensors and pump failures. Rust is a common concern, especially in regions with harsh winters and road salt usage. Rocker panels, lower doors, and frame components are prone to corrosion. HVAC system problems, such as blower motor failure and issues with the blend door actuator, are also reported. Engine issues are generally less frequent, but oil consumption and occasional sensor failures can occur. While specific recall data should be checked with official sources (NHTSA), common recalls for this generation Yukon sometimes relate to airbag systems or fuel system components. Long-term reliability concerns revolve around the longevity of the transmission and the potential for rust-related repairs. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes and rust prevention measures, is crucial for maximizing the lifespan of a 2002 GMC Yukon.

How long will the 2002 GMC Yukon last?

With proper maintenance, a 2002 GMC Yukon can realistically provide 200,000 miles or more of service. Many examples can still be found on the road with well over that mileage. However, long-term durability heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting fluid changes (transmission, engine oil, coolant) significantly shortens lifespan. The transmission is a known weak point, and regular servicing is crucial. Rust is another major factor; vehicles in rust-prone areas require diligent rust prevention to avoid significant structural damage. Proper care extends the vehicle's lifespan, while neglect drastically reduces it. Expect 15-20 years of service with good maintenance.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 GMC Yukon's tech and safety features were relatively basic by modern standards. Built-in tech included a standard AM/FM radio with cassette player (CD player was optional), and available features like OnStar. Entertainment options were limited but included optional rear-seat audio controls. Driver-assistance features were minimal, primarily consisting of power steering and antilock brakes (ABS). Safety features included dual front airbags, side-impact door beams, and seatbelts for all occupants. Four-wheel drive offered enhanced traction in adverse conditions. Optional features included fog lamps and a security system. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show acceptable performance for frontal impacts, but side-impact protection was less impressive. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings are less readily available for this specific year but generally indicate marginal to acceptable performance for similar vehicles of that era. Keep in mind the Yukon predates electronic stability control, lane departure warnings, and other modern driver-assistance systems. Base models had limited features, whereas higher trim levels offered more comfort and convenience items but did not significantly enhance safety.

2002 GMC Yukon Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 GMC Yukon's MSRP ranged from approximately $30,000 to $40,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and location. Depreciation has been significant, as expected for a vehicle of this age. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition (rust-free examples command a premium), mileage, maintenance records, and the presence of desirable options like four-wheel drive and leather seats. Vehicles with documented maintenance histories and in exceptionally clean condition will fetch higher prices. The availability of replacement parts and the demand for large SUVs also play a role in resale value.

2002 GMC Yukon Cost of Ownership

The 2002 GMC Yukon is generally considered costly to own in the long term. Insurance costs are moderate, depending on coverage and driving record. Fuel economy is poor, contributing significantly to running costs. Maintenance and repair expenses can be substantial, particularly as the vehicle ages and parts become more prone to failure. Common repairs like transmission work, rust repair, and ABS system fixes can be expensive. While some parts are readily available and relatively affordable, the frequency of repairs can make long-term ownership financially burdensome. It's not an economical vehicle choice.

2002 GMC Yukon Insurance

Insurance for a 2002 GMC Yukon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 GMC Yukon Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2002 GMC Yukon competed with full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Dodge Durango. In terms of performance, the Yukon was generally comparable to the Tahoe (its corporate cousin) and offered similar engine options. The Ford Expedition offered a slightly smoother ride and independent rear suspension, giving it an edge in ride comfort. The Dodge Durango was smaller and offered less cargo space. Feature-wise, the Yukon was competitive, offering similar amenities to its rivals. Reliability is a mixed bag; all these SUVs have potential issues related to their age. The Yukon's transmission is a known weak point. The Ford Expedition's independent rear suspension can be more complex to repair. Pricewise, the Yukon was generally in line with the Tahoe and Expedition when new. On the used market, prices are similar across these models, depending on condition and mileage. If reliability is a top concern, a meticulously maintained Toyota Sequoia from a similar year might be a slightly better choice, known for its longevity. However, the Sequoia might command a higher price. A well-maintained Tahoe offers a similar experience to the Yukon, given their shared platform and components.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 GMC Yukon a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2002 GMC Yukon is ideal for someone needing a large, capable SUV for occasional towing or hauling, and who doesn't mind the inherent drawbacks of an older vehicle. It's only worth buying used at this point, and only if the price reflects its age and condition. Look for examples with documented maintenance, minimal rust, and a healthy transmission. The SLT trim offers more features, but the SLE can be a good value if well-maintained. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is essential. Be prepared for higher running costs and potential repairs. If fuel economy and long-term reliability are top priorities, consider a smaller, newer SUV or a different full-size SUV with a stronger reliability record.

Love My Yukon

I love my Yukon, my parents bought it new for me when I was a senior in high school. It has been all over the country with me as I travelled trying to make it on the LPGA. The seats are so comfortable, the ride is really smooth, and it fits everything I need when traveling. I can’t imagine ever getting rid of it. It has been quite reliable except for the fact that is has gone through 3 fuel pumps. And I think it’s going to need a 4th because it has had trouble starting up quickly, I can always tell because she gets hard to start when the fuel pump is starting to go. Other than that this car has been amazing!

Highly recommended

I have had this Yukon for 15 years. It has almost 250,000 miles on it now. Had the tranny re-built at 200,00. Besides that it has had normal wear and tear, I have kept up on oil changes and that's about it. The 5.3 is solid and has never let me down. I look forward to many more years with this truck.

124000 Miles and still going strong...

My Dad bought it new in early 03 and has put 124000 miles on it. He gave it to my wife and I today and its been serviced accordingly. Runs like a champ, paint is near perfect except for a couple small chips on front end and two small door dings from Walmart shoppers. Interior is still really nice, never been smoked in! Garage kept all its existence. With the price of these things today 2018 i couldn't see selling it bluebook,i'll bet this Yukon has another 100000 in it. I plan to keep it as well as my 03 Ram with 100000 miles. Awesome vehicle!

I bought this truck new, I have had it 15 years. I change the oil & tires, very little other maintenance was needed. A fuel filter and 1 set of brakes. I have the 6 liter V8, while it is a big heavy SUV, it moves quite nibbaly and picks up speed nicely.
