The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is a subcompact SUV, known for its standard all-wheel drive and adventurous spirit. Based on the Impreza, it boasts a raised suspension for light off-roading. Model years have seen relatively consistent updates since its introduction. Key trims include Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, and Hybrid. Pricing generally ranges from the low $20,000s to the low $30,000s. Its appeal lies in its go-anywhere capability, fuel efficiency (especially the hybrid), and Subaru's reputation for reliability.
The Good

The 2022 Crosstrek offers standard all-wheel drive, appealing to practical buyers seeking all-weather capability. Its reliability and strong resale value provide peace of mind. While not a performance machine, the Sport trim offers a more responsive engine. Its rugged, outdoorsy design and comfortable interior attract those seeking adventure. The hybrid provides excellent fuel efficiency.

The Bad

The base engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded or climbing hills. The infotainment system, while functional, is not the most modern or intuitive. The rear seats can be cramped for taller passengers, and cargo space is limited compared to some rivals. Watch out for potential oil consumption issues, particularly in earlier model years.

What Problems Does the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Have?

While generally reliable, the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek, like previous model years, can experience certain issues. Some owners have reported excessive oil consumption, particularly with the 2.0-liter engine. While Subaru has addressed this in some cases, it remains a concern. The infotainment system can be slow to respond or glitchy for some users.

Recalls are relatively infrequent, but it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for any active recalls related to your specific VIN. Long-term reliability is generally good, but proper maintenance is key. The CVT transmission, while generally reliable, should have its fluid changed according to Subaru's recommendations. Earlier model years (pre-2018) had more reported issues with the infotainment system and some engine problems, so the 2022 model benefits from improvements made over time. Battery drain issues have also been reported, especially in models with more electronic features. Regular software updates and proper battery maintenance can mitigate these risks.

How long will the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek last?

With regular maintenance, a 2022 Subaru Crosstrek can easily reach 150,000-200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 10-15 years of service. Long-term durability is a strong point, thanks to Subaru's focus on engineering robust powertrains and all-wheel-drive systems. However, neglecting maintenance, particularly oil changes and CVT fluid replacements, can significantly shorten its lifespan. Early signs of wear often appear in the suspension components and rubber bushings. Rust can be a concern in colder climates with road salt, so undercoating is recommended. Keeping up with scheduled maintenance and addressing minor issues promptly will maximize the Crosstrek's longevity.

Traded a Jeep Sport for a Crosstrek Sport and couldn’t be happier. On the first road trip of almost two thousand miles averaged 38 mpg at between 70-75 mph during the first six hours of driving. Performance was smooth with no issues. Very good vehicle. My 3rd Subaru and had 4 new Wranglers. Will stick with Subarus. Better build quality

I have been waiting to buy a new car for years but kept putting it off. I had an Acura TL and absolutely hated it. It was too low to the ground and poor gas mileage. I found the Crosstrek at the dealership and ended up ordering it. It is the perfect car for me. Every upgrade and option is perfect, well thought out and functional. The color is perfect. The interior is awesome and is very easy to use... one of the easiest cars I have ever used. Almost considering buying a second one for my husband.

Crosstrek drives smooth, has great fuel economy, all-wheel drive, safe, and can carry the entire family's gear. Can't beat the price for what the vehicle offers.

I bought a used 2022 CPO Crosstrek Limited with only 18K miles. The car is super noisy, especially on highway. I can't listen to the music unless the volume is way up. I do not want to ruin my eardrums so no music on hgwy. Period. Won't keep this car for long!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek features a user-friendly infotainment system with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. The base model features a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch display. Available features include navigation, premium audio systems (like Harman Kardon), and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Subaru's EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is standard on CVT-equipped models, offering features like adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist. Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are available on higher trims.

Safety is a strong point. The 2022 Crosstrek received excellent crash-test ratings from the IIHS, earning a Top Safety Pick+ designation. Standard safety features include a rearview camera, stability control, and multiple airbags. Optional features include reverse automatic braking and steering responsive headlights. The combination of active safety technology and strong crash performance makes the Crosstrek a safe choice.

2022 Subaru Crosstrek Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek had a starting MSRP in the low $20,000s, climbing to the low $30,000s for the Limited and Hybrid trims. Used market prices currently range from the high teens to the mid-$20,000s, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Subaru vehicles, including the Crosstrek, hold their value exceptionally well. Factors contributing to strong resale value include Subaru's reputation for reliability, the standard all-wheel-drive system, and high demand in certain regions. Lower mileage and a clean accident history significantly boost resale value. Expect relatively low depreciation compared to other subcompact SUVs.

2022 Subaru Crosstrek Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially with the hybrid version. Maintenance costs are moderate, with routine services being relatively affordable. Repairs can be slightly more expensive than some competitors due to the all-wheel-drive system and Subaru-specific parts. However, Subaru's reliability helps keep repair costs down in the long run. Overall, the Crosstrek offers a good balance of affordability and dependability.

How Does the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek competes with vehicles like the Honda HR-V, Mazda CX-30, Kia Seltos, and Jeep Renegade. Compared to the HR-V, the Crosstrek offers standard all-wheel drive and a more rugged image, but the HR-V has more cargo space. The CX-30 boasts a more premium interior and sportier handling, but lacks the Crosstrek's off-road capability. The Kia Seltos offers more features for the price and a longer warranty, but its long-term reliability is less established. The Jeep Renegade offers similar off-road chops but can be less fuel-efficient and reliable.

A similar alternative would be the Mazda CX-5 if you prioritize driving dynamics and interior quality, but are willing to spend a bit more. The Kia Seltos offers a compelling value proposition with a wealth of features. For off-road enthusiasts, the Jeep Renegade Trailhawk might be a better option, but be prepared for potential reliability compromises. Ultimately, the Crosstrek's blend of all-wheel drive, reliability, and value makes it a strong contender.

The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is an excellent choice for those seeking a reliable, all-weather-capable subcompact SUV. It's ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, city dwellers facing inclement weather, and anyone prioritizing safety and resale value. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. The Sport or Limited trims are recommended for those desiring more power. A used model can offer significant savings, but ensure a thorough inspection and maintenance history review. The hybrid is worthwhile for those prioritizing fuel economy and short commutes. The Crosstrek is a solid all-arounder, well worth considering if its strengths align with your priorities.

Perfect vehicle

I personally love my 22 Crosstrac. I have the turbo engine and it has a lot of go to it. Very sturdy on the road at higher speeds. I have the Limited Edition with diamond sparkle black paint, black leather interior very sharp looking vehicle. There was a few hiccups in the beginning with a few minor leaks around the windshield which was promptly fix by the dealership. Gas mileage is great. If you have a family or intend on traveling a lot, the storage part is small other than that perfection all around.

overall a great commuter car

I have a 2022 Crosstrek Limited. I think it is overall a great commuter car with average 33MPG. However, I have two issues with this vehicle 1) Seat it took small & uncomfortable if you seat for a period of time and 2) Highway wind noise is pretty loud around 70 db at 65mph.

WORST CAR EVER!

Worst car, terrible gas mileage. Best I get on highway is 20mpg. Wish I never bought this car . Start stop tech feels like the car is falling apart everytime it starts. Ride is extremely rough. Not much room in back for traveling. Never been more disappointed with a car purchase and now I'm stuck with it.

Love my car

I traded a 2018 Crosstrek for the 2022 with the 2.5 engine. I loved the 2018, but the 2.5 takes things to a new level. Being a small car, the extra HP is noticeable. The safety features, including blind spot detection, rear cross traffic alerts, all wheel drive, and front Eyesight, make me feel very confident in the car. It corners great and has a good turn radius. It's too early to tell about the 2022, but since I had no reliability issues with the 2018, I expect this one to perform just as well.

Go ahead. Indulge a bit.

I couldn't recommend this car, this model more. We got a Crosstrek Premium with the extra Blindspot safety package that includes the power moon roof. It is the perfect size car for my wife and I, with all the safety and convenience tech we wanted. We have both loved this model for years and wanted to get one, and now that we have, we are super pleased. If you are hesitating, pull the trigger. You won't regret it.
