The 2008 Subaru Legacy is a mid-size sedan (also available as a wagon) known for its standard all-wheel drive. Part of the fourth generation (2005-2009), it offered reliability and practicality. Key trims included the 2.5i, 2.5GT, and Spec.B. Pricing ranged from approximately $20,000 to $35,000 when new. Its symmetrical AWD system, providing excellent traction in various weather conditions, sets it apart and contributes to its popularity.

What Problems Does the 2008 Subaru Legacy Have?

The 2008 Subaru Legacy is generally considered reliable, but some frequently reported problems and long-term concerns exist. The most common issue is head gasket failure in the 2.5i engine. This can lead to coolant leaks and overheating. Oil consumption is another concern, with some engines burning excessive amounts of oil, potentially requiring frequent top-offs. Catalytic converter failure is also reported by some owners as the car ages. Transmission issues, such as harsh shifting, primarily with the automatic transmission, can appear over time.

Rust can be a problem, especially in regions where road salt is used. Suspension components, such as struts and control arm bushings, may wear out and need replacement. Interior trim pieces can be prone to breaking or cracking. Recalls for the 2008 Subaru Legacy have addressed issues such as potential fuel leakage and brake light switch failures. Always check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information. While these issues aren't universal, they're worth investigating during a pre-purchase inspection. Owners can mitigate some risks through diligent maintenance, including regular oil changes and coolant checks.

How long will the 2008 Subaru Legacy last?

With proper maintenance, a 2008 Subaru Legacy can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mark. Years of service can extend beyond 15 years with consistent care. Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Key factors are regular oil changes (every 3,000-5,000 miles), timely coolant flushes, and addressing any emerging issues promptly. The head gasket issue is a potential long-term weakness in the 2.5i engine, and rust can be a factor in certain climates. Well-maintained examples showcase Subaru's reputation for longevity.

I drove my '08 Legacy for years and was so sad when she was totaled at 125k miles. She would've gone another 125k if she could've! I would highly recommend, especially for tall drivers like me because of the headroom. No major maintenance until about 110k when I had to replace the timing belt, radiator, power steering pump/hose, drive belts, etc., but the original head gasket stayed in great shape. She never left me stranded and I loved her. Super cool car, very reliable, practical, smooth ride with AWD and good looking, so sad she's gone!

I have owned around 8 of these legacy's from 2004 all the way up to 2008. GTs, 3.0Rs and a couple of Spec xx all have been wagons and they haven never left me dissatisfied the ride quality is great the performance is fantastic and they car as a whole is outstanding.

I will only be using the car on the weekends, as i have a City van for work! Just need a car for shopping and other events. This will be perfect for short trips in the area.
Negative Owner Reviews

I've been driving for almost 35 years and have owned many many cars over the years and my 08' Legacy has to rank as one of the worst. I bought it in the summer of 2017 with 135k miles. I bought it mostly because I needed something AWD for the snow and ice in the winter here in Lake Arrowhead, CA. True, the AWD is an amazing feature and this car works very well in the snow but that's where everything good about this car ends. At 140k miles the head gasket blew blessing me with a $2500 bill to fix it. Next, the rear bumper began magically and mysteriously unhinging itself from it's mountings on either side of the bumper despite the fact that I've never bumped or backed this car into anything. Next, all the idiot lights on the dash began coming on for no apparent reason rendering the cruise control inoperable. I cleaned the battery terminals thinking that would help it, and it did....for about a week then it began happening all over again. Mysteriously it just went away on it's own about 3 weeks ago. The heated seats crapped out about 3 months after purchasing the car and just a few weeks ago the passenger side window motor gave up but not before leaving a 1/4 inch opening at the top allowing water and snow to get it. I can't even find the words to tell you people how much I hate this 2008 Legacy but unfortunately I still have one more year of payments to make. After that, if someone doesn't buy it, I will push it off the nearest cliff I can find.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2008 Subaru Legacy's built-in tech, entertainment, and safety features were fairly standard for its time. Base models typically included a basic AM/FM radio with a CD player. Higher trims offered upgraded audio systems, sometimes with a subwoofer. Navigation was available as an optional feature on some trims. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring available in 2008.

Standard safety features included anti-lock brakes (ABS), front airbags, and side-impact airbags. Stability control was also available on some trims. Optional features included a sunroof and heated seats.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good results for the 2008 Subaru Legacy. It earned good ratings in frontal offset and side-impact crash tests. However, always check the latest reports on the IIHS and NHTSA websites for comprehensive and up-to-date safety information. Overall, while not cutting-edge, the Legacy offered a solid level of safety for its era, prioritizing occupant protection in the event of a collision.

2008 Subaru Legacy Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2008 Subaru Legacy ranged from around $20,000 to $35,000, depending on the trim level and options. Current used market prices typically range from $4,000 to $10,000, but can vary based on condition, mileage, and location. The Legacy has depreciated significantly over time, as is typical for most vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the car's overall condition, mileage, maintenance history, and whether it has desirable features like the turbocharged engine or leather interior. The Subaru's reputation for all-wheel drive and reliability helps it retain value compared to some competitors.

2008 Subaru Legacy Cost of Ownership

The 2008 Subaru Legacy is moderately economical to own. Insurance costs are generally average for its class. Fuel costs depend on the engine; the 2.5i is more fuel-efficient than the 2.5GT. Maintenance costs can be higher than average due to the potential for head gasket issues and the complexity of all-wheel-drive systems. Repairs can be expensive, especially for specialized components. Long-term ownership costs are manageable with proactive maintenance, but neglecting issues can lead to costly repairs.

How Does the 2008 Subaru Legacy Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2008 Subaru Legacy competes with mid-size sedans like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Mazda 6, and Nissan Altima. In terms of performance, the Legacy 2.5GT offers a sporty edge with its turbo engine and AWD, unlike most competitors which are FWD. The Accord and Camry typically offer better fuel economy. Feature-wise, the Legacy is comparable, but some competitors might offer more advanced tech options. Reliability is generally good, but the Legacy's head gasket issues can be a concern, where as the Toyota Camry is known for its stellar reliability.

Price-wise, the Legacy is often competitively priced on the used market. A similar alternative is the Mazda 6, which offers sporty handling but lacks AWD. The Toyota Camry is a more reliable option, though less engaging to drive. The Honda Accord is another strong contender, offering a balance of reliability, features, and driving experience. If all-wheel drive isn't a necessity, the Accord or Camry might be better choices due to their strong track records for reliability and lower maintenance costs. However, for all-weather capability, the Legacy remains a strong contender.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Subaru Legacy a Good Sedan?

The 2008 Subaru Legacy is ideal for buyers seeking a reliable, all-wheel-drive sedan or wagon, especially those living in areas with inclement weather. It's worth buying used if a well-maintained example can be found with a thorough pre-purchase inspection. The 2.5GT offers a fun driving experience, while the 2.5i provides a more economical option. Pay close attention to the maintenance history and check for signs of head gasket issues or rust. If AWD isn't essential, consider alternatives like the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry for potentially lower long-term costs. The Legacy remains a solid choice for its unique combination of features and capabilities.

Good overall car

This is a good basic car. The best feature is of course the all-wheel-drive. We were never stuck in the snow and we always had confidence it would get us where we needed to go. As a 2.5i model, gas mileage was decent, about 28 highway and the interior was quiet and comfortable.

Turbo too small for engine

Went thru 3 turbos in 6 years and 2 engines and the mechanic thinks it’s because the turbo is too small for the engine. If i didn’t have to put so much money into the car after purchase I would have loved it p

108,000 and a great ride

First of all there is no rust a big thing in PA. Car is tight and wants to eat up another 108,000. You can feel it in the engine. I just got this car and can't wait to AWD it in the snow. I'm tired of 2 wheeling it in 6 inches of snow up here. No drips no drops under the car. This might be one of the best cars I have ever owned:).
