2005 Dodge Dakota Overview, Reviews, Ratings & Specs

Rating: 4.27
Based on 55 Owner Reviews
Jovan | March 31, 2025
The 2005 Dodge Dakota is a mid-size pickup truck that offered a compelling alternative to compact trucks and full-size behemoths. Introduced in 1987, the Dakota filled a niche perfectly. The 2005 model year came in regular cab, extended cab (Club Cab), and crew cab configurations. Key trims included the ST, SLT, and Laramie. Pricing ranged from approximately $17,000 to $28,000 when new. It was popular for its "just right" size and available V8 power, making it both practical and capable.
The Good

The 2005 Dakota offers a good balance of performance and practicality. Its available V8 provides ample power for towing and hauling, appealing to those needing a capable truck. While not the most fuel-efficient, it offers decent value for its size and features. Comfortable ride quality and a relatively spacious cabin make it appealing for daily use.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include lower fuel economy, especially with the V8 engine. Some owners have reported issues with the front suspension and electrical components. Rust can be a concern, particularly in areas with harsh winters. The interior plastics can also feel cheap and prone to wear over time.

What Problems Does the 2005 Dodge Dakota Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2005 Dodge Dakota include issues with the front suspension, such as premature ball joint wear. Electrical problems, including issues with the instrument cluster and power windows, have also been reported. Some owners have experienced rust issues, particularly in areas with road salt. The 4.7L V8 engine has been known to suffer from sludge buildup if oil changes are not performed regularly. Recalls for the 2005 Dakota have included issues related to airbags and potential fuel leaks. Long-term reliability concerns center around the lifespan of certain components, such as the transmission and the aforementioned suspension parts. Owners should pay close attention to the condition of the undercarriage for rust, and carefully inspect the engine for any signs of oil leaks or excessive wear. Also, checking the car's history for completed recalls is recommended. Some model years, including 2005, have experienced issues with the blend door actuator, which affects the heating and cooling system.

How long will the 2005 Dodge Dakota last?

With proper maintenance, a 2005 Dodge Dakota can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report getting 15-20 years of service out of their Dakotas with consistent care. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes, failing to address rust promptly, or ignoring suspension issues will significantly shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses over time include potential rust problems (especially in the North), wear and tear on suspension components, and potential issues with the 4.7L V8 engine if not properly maintained. Regular fluid changes and addressing repairs promptly are key to maximizing longevity.

Front brakes locked up 3 times. $500 each time. The last time I just had 5800 miles on them. The truck has 79000 miles on it now.

Bought with low miles, have owned it for many years without any problems. Used it for camping & kayaking for fun adventures. Great for carrying furniture, gardening products and home maintenance materials. Four wheel drive reliability in bad weather and snowy conditions. Club cab provides extra space. Solid performer!

It's very reliable, but the rear doors stucked, can't open!! Which has caused a problem when we has to put something or someone in the rear. Is there anyway it can be a recall to get them fixed? Never had this happen!!

This vehicle has a recall on it that is not fixable with airbags. Don't buy it unless its fixed else you pay BIG!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2005 Dodge Dakota's tech and safety features are relatively basic by modern standards. Built-in tech typically includes an AM/FM radio, and CD player was optional. Higher trims could feature a cassette player and upgraded sound systems. Driver-assistance features are limited to standard features like power steering and brakes. Safety features include front airbags, and anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional. Side airbags were available as an option on some trims. Crash test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS vary depending on the cab configuration. The NHTSA gave the 2005 Dakota crew cab four stars for driver and passenger frontal crash protection and five stars for side crash protection. The IIHS did not rate the 2005 Dakota. Optional features included things like cruise control, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, and a sunroof. Compared to newer vehicles, the Dakota lacks modern infotainment systems, advanced safety technologies like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring, and advanced driver-assistance systems.

2005 Dodge Dakota Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2005 Dodge Dakota ranged in price from approximately $17,000 to $28,000 depending on the trim and options. Currently, used market prices typically range from $3,000 to $10,000 depending on condition, mileage, and location. The Dakota has depreciated significantly over time, which is typical for older vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include overall condition, mileage, engine type (V8 models tend to hold their value better), and whether it's 2WD or 4WD (4WD models are generally more desirable, especially in colder climates). Rust-free examples command a premium.

2005 Dodge Dakota Cost of Ownership

Long-term ownership costs for a 2005 Dodge Dakota can be moderate. Insurance costs are generally affordable. Fuel costs, especially with the V8, are higher than more modern vehicles. Maintenance and repair costs can be variable. Some parts are readily available and relatively inexpensive, but specific repairs can become costly. Overall, it's not the most economical vehicle to own due to fuel consumption and potential maintenance needs, but it can be a decent value if purchased at a low price and well-maintained.

2005 Dodge Dakota Insurance

Insurance for a 2005 Dodge Dakota is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2005 Dodge Dakota Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck?

The 2005 Dodge Dakota competed with trucks like the Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, and Chevrolet Colorado. Compared to the Tacoma, the Dakota offered a more powerful V8 option and a larger cabin in crew cab configurations, but the Tacoma generally held an advantage in reliability and resale value. The Nissan Frontier offered similar capabilities but often lacked the Dakota's interior space. The Chevrolet Colorado was comparable in terms of performance and features. In terms of reliability, the Tacoma is often considered a superior choice. However, if V8 power and a slightly larger size are priorities, the Dakota is worth considering, especially if you can find one in good condition at a lower price point than a comparable Tacoma. Alternatives to consider include the later model (2005+) Toyota Tacoma for superior reliability, or the Honda Ridgeline for a more comfortable and refined ride, though the Ridgeline's towing capacity is less. The Colorado/Canyon twins are also similar alternatives.

Final Verdict: Is the 2005 Dodge Dakota a Good Sport Utility Vehicle Cab; Truck?

The 2005 Dodge Dakota is ideal for someone seeking an affordable, mid-size truck with available V8 power and a decent towing capacity. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with reasonable mileage and a clean title. Look for models with the 4.7L V8 for added power. Consider the SLT or Laramie trims for more features and comfort. However, be prepared for potential maintenance costs and lower fuel economy compared to more modern trucks. If reliability is your top priority, consider a Toyota Tacoma instead. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is highly recommended to assess the vehicle's overall condition before committing to a purchase.

Would buy again if I could.

I have a 2005 dakota that I purchased new. I love it. 18 years of owning it. I have had very few issues. I use for hauling and recently I have been using it for highway driving. It just works. It's nothing fancy in fact it's kind of utilitarian. But I does everything I need it to do. I do maintain it well. but I have only had minor issues. The fuel mileage is not great but it's a truck.

Its a great truck, good sound system, simple interior design, a lot of room. Great for commuting or for hauling items, the only issue that I can think of is that its a bit short.

Awesome truck

I first owned a 98 Dakota and fell in love with it when it was time for a new vehicle i chose a newer Dakota because your getting a lot of truck for the money. Theres space for your family amd friends to sit comfortable and plenty of space and power to haul large items and tow small to medium trailers. Interior is straight forward with a nice sounding radio all displays nice and clear. The only thong i wiah was dofferent about MY particular truck is I wish it was a v8 with a stick. However with that being said this lottle v6 gets the job. I do everything i ised to do with my old truck in this newer one and this one does come with a v8 6 speed option which ill be sure to 'pick up' in the future so yeah i recommend it.
