Rating: 4.48
Based on 45 Owner Reviews
Eugene S | March 31, 2025
The 2011 Subaru Impreza is part of the third generation (2008-2011). It's available as a sedan and a hatchback. Key trims include the base 2.5i, Premium, and Limited. Pricing ranged from around $17,000 to $22,000 new. Its standard symmetrical all-wheel drive (AWD) sets it apart, offering enhanced traction and handling in various weather conditions, making it a popular choice for those living in areas with snow or rain.
The Good

The 2011 Impreza offers the practical advantage of standard AWD, boosting confidence in adverse conditions. It boasts decent reliability and fuel efficiency for an AWD vehicle. Emotionally, buyers appreciate the Subaru's reputation for safety and ruggedness, and the fun-to-drive factor afforded by the capable drivetrain. It offers good value for the price.

The Bad

The 2011 Impreza's weaknesses include a somewhat underpowered engine, especially noticeable when fully loaded. The interior materials can feel cheap and the design is fairly basic. Potential buyers should watch out for head gasket issues, a common Subaru concern, and be aware of potential oil consumption problems in some models. The ride can also be a bit harsh for some.

What Problems Does the 2011 Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2011 Subaru Impreza, like many Subarus of that era, has some frequently reported problems. The most significant concern revolves around potential head gasket failure. This issue isn't unique to the 2011 model year, but it's something prospective buyers should be aware of. Symptoms include coolant leaks, overheating, and white smoke from the exhaust. Another common issue is oil consumption, with some owners reporting the need to add oil between changes. This can be attributed to piston ring design in some cases.

Check for any recalls related to the 2011 Impreza. Recalls often address safety-related issues and are crucial to address. Websites like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) provide recall information based on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues if they are not properly addressed. Regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and coolant flushes, is crucial to mitigate these potential problems. The relatively thin paint can also be prone to chipping and scratching, leading to cosmetic concerns over time. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system.

How long will the 2011 Subaru Impreza last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2011 Subaru Impreza can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 10-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily relies on consistent upkeep. Long-term durability is generally good, but the aforementioned head gasket and oil consumption issues can shorten the lifespan if ignored. Rust can also become a factor, especially in regions with road salt. Regularly inspecting and addressing these potential weaknesses is crucial for maximizing the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2011 Subaru Impreza offered relatively basic tech and safety features for its time.

Entertainment: The standard entertainment system included a CD player, AM/FM radio, and an auxiliary audio input jack. Higher trims offered upgraded sound systems. Navigation was available as an optional feature on the Limited trim.

Driver-Assistance: Driver-assistance features were minimal. ABS and stability control were standard.

Safety Features: Standard safety features included:
  • Anti-lock brakes (ABS)
  • Electronic stability control (ESC)
  • Traction control
  • Front airbags
  • Side curtain airbags

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2011 Subaru Impreza received generally positive crash-test ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). It earned a "Top Safety Pick" award from the IIHS. NHTSA ratings typically involved a star rating system across different crash scenarios, with overall good results.

Compared to modern vehicles, the 2011 Impreza lacks advanced safety technologies like blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, or automatic emergency braking.

2011 Subaru Impreza Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2011 Subaru Impreza ranged from approximately $17,000 to $22,000, depending on the trim level and options. As of today, used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them ranging from $5,000 to $12,000. Depreciation has been moderate, influenced by Subaru's reputation for reliability and the desirability of its AWD system. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance records, accident history, and overall condition. Low-mileage examples in excellent condition command higher prices.

2011 Subaru Impreza Cost of Ownership

The 2011 Subaru Impreza generally falls into the economical category for long-term ownership costs. Insurance premiums are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for an AWD vehicle. Maintenance costs can be average, but potential head gasket and oil consumption issues can lead to higher repair bills if not addressed proactively. Regular maintenance, like oil changes and fluid flushes, is crucial to keep costs down. Overall, it's a relatively affordable vehicle to own, especially if you're prepared for potential Subaru-specific repairs.

2011 Subaru Impreza Insurance

Insurance for a 2011 Subaru Impreza is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2011 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2011 Subaru Impreza competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Impreza's engine felt less powerful compared to some rivals, though its AWD provided superior traction. Feature-wise, it lagged behind competitors like the Civic and Mazda3, which offered more advanced technology. Reliability is generally good, but the head gasket issue is a significant concern not present in the Corolla or Civic. Price-wise, the Impreza was competitive, especially considering its standard AWD.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Honda Civic: Better fuel economy and a more refined interior, but lacks AWD.
  • Toyota Corolla: Excellent reliability and a comfortable ride, but less engaging to drive and no AWD option.
  • Mazda3: More stylish and fun-to-drive, but AWD is not available, and reliability may not be as strong as the Corolla.
  • Hyundai Elantra: Offers good value and a long warranty, but AWD is not an option and long-term reliability is less established.
For buyers prioritizing AWD and a rugged reputation, the Impreza remains a strong contender. However, those prioritizing fuel economy, features, or avoiding potential Subaru-specific repairs might find better alternatives.

Final Verdict: Is the 2011 Subaru Impreza a Good Sedan?

The 2011 Subaru Impreza is a decent choice for buyers who need all-wheel drive and appreciate Subaru's reputation for safety and reliability. It's especially suitable for those living in areas with challenging weather conditions. It's worth buying if you find one in good condition with well-documented maintenance records. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended to check for potential head gasket issues or oil consumption. The Premium or Limited trims offer more desirable features, but even the base model provides the essential AWD capability. Consider alternatives if you prioritize fuel economy, advanced features, or want to avoid potential Subaru-specific repairs. Focus on finding one that has been well-maintained to reduce long-term costs.

10 years, 150k+, and I still love it

I own the 2011 Impreza Outback Sport. Can't say enough great things about this car. Over the past 10 years I have put 155,000 miles on it and it's still my every day vehicle. The biggest issue I've ever had with it was I had to replace the fuel pump around 120k. It's great in the snow, it handles very well overall, and I know it's safe to drive thanks to Subaru's 5 star crash rating.

Awesome vehicle!

I have owned this car for almost 4 years now and love it. I'm almost six feet tall and I fit comfortably inside it though if someone is behind me they may be a bit scrunched up. If you're a smaller person you'll have no problem fitting into one of these. Car handles great, the AWD is great for Colorado Winter Driving. Never had a problem there. Only minor complaint is that I can't see the end of the hood so I've hit a couple of curbs in my time. With it being smaller and shorter than the outback, the hatchback version is great for getting around some of the narrow streets here in Denver and the car can fit a surprising amount inside of it. Would highly recommend the vehicle.

Highest Quality Vehicle I've Owned!

This car meets all of my needs. There are a few minor changes to make the car more ideal, but for my price range I couldn't ask for anything better. I love having a car sunroof for the first time.

2011 Impreza 2.5 Premium

The hunt for a used vehicle can be a tedious one, however, cars.com made my experience that much more easier, I recently purchased a used 2011 Subaru Impreza. This vehicle I must say has been my best purchase thus far, I have owned Nissan, Honda as well as Scion in my lifetime, but the Impreza has surpassed the rest.

Powerful machine

Cobb accessport made the car come to life. When I first bought it, it was my first Subaru, and the expectation was high. It was stock and it sure felt like it. However, after 'unlocking' the car with the accessport, i finally saw what the rave about the WRX's/STI's was. If you're looking for a car that will be a blast to drive (regardless of weather), reliable (usually), and fast then it's it. The interior design/material and comfort does not compare to the German cars, so in other words luxury is not to be found in the Subaru. However, if you don't need the smoothest ride, top quality sound system and interior material (HIGH end plastic) then give Subaru a shot and I think you won't be disappointed. I would recommend this car to any age group, but mostly to younger adults since it's a fun, fast, and after all a bit of a obnoxious (in the best way) sports car that is like an oversized go cart (look and sound wise).
