The 2012 Subaru Impreza marked the beginning of its fourth generation, offering a compact and practical choice for drivers. Available as a sedan and a hatchback, it catered to diverse needs. Key trims included the base, Premium, Limited, and Sport. New models ranged from approximately $17,500 to $22,500. The Impreza stood out due to its standard all-wheel drive (AWD), a feature not commonly found in its class, making it popular for those needing extra traction and stability in various weather conditions.
The Good

The 2012 Impreza offers practical advantages with its standard AWD, improving safety and confidence. The fuel efficiency for an AWD vehicle is respectable. For emotional buyers, the Impreza's Subaru heritage and rugged reputation provide a sense of security and adventure. Its comfortable ride and improved interior also contribute to a pleasant driving experience. Solid reliability makes it a sensible, long-term choice.

The Bad

The 2012 Impreza's engine, while fuel-efficient, can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded or driving uphill. Some owners have reported oil consumption issues. The interior, while improved, still lags behind some competitors in terms of material quality and design. Road noise can be noticeable at highway speeds. Potential buyers should check for oil leaks and carefully consider its performance capabilities.

What Problems Does the 2012 Subaru Impreza Have?

The 2012 Subaru Impreza, while generally reliable, has some known issues. One frequently reported problem is excessive oil consumption, where the engine burns more oil than expected. This issue can potentially lead to engine damage if not monitored and addressed. Subaru issued a technical service bulletin (TSB) to address this, and some owners had success with updated piston rings. Another concern is related to the CVT transmission. Some owners have reported issues with shuddering or hesitation, particularly at lower speeds. Regular maintenance, including fluid changes, is crucial to mitigate these risks.

Recalls for the 2012 Impreza have primarily focused on airbag-related issues, as part of the broader Takata airbag recall affecting numerous manufacturers. These recalls involved potential defects in the airbag inflators, which could rupture and cause injury during deployment. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with Subaru to ensure all recall work has been completed. Long-term reliability concerns mainly revolve around the longevity of the CVT transmission and the potential for continued oil consumption as the engine ages. Suspension components, such as struts and bushings, may also require replacement over time due to wear and tear. Overall, while not immune to problems, the Impreza generally holds up well with proper maintenance.

How long will the 2012 Subaru Impreza last?

With consistent maintenance, a 2012 Subaru Impreza can easily reach 200,000 miles or more and provide 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes (especially addressing potential oil consumption issues), timely CVT fluid replacements, and adherence to scheduled maintenance are crucial. Long-term durability is generally good, but weaknesses include the CVT transmission's potential for issues, oil consumption requiring frequent monitoring, and the eventual wear of suspension components. Rust can also be a concern in regions with road salt. Addressing these proactively will maximize the car's lifespan.

This has been a spectacular car for us and we will definitely miss it. It does great in the snow, and is smooth down the highway.

Fun car to drive. Comfortable. Great in all weather. This winter was able to get through some thick snow better than some trucks did. Recommend to all.

The car meets all my wants and needs. Sun roof, heated seats, beautiful color, comfortable interior, roof rack and I got it for a steal!

While this car grips the road and handles corners and snow well, it lacks in ways you would not expect a Subaru car to. I bought this car brand new in 2012. The day i drove it home i noticed a small dent on the door. Since then the paint has scratches all over the doors and front. I had a 2002 focus and the paint on that car was impeccable compared to my Subaru. Right after buying the car I noticed when I would start it, the engine would rev up super fast and loud and then calm down after a few minutes. The car is overall very loud. Road noise is easily heard and its hard to hear music over it especially on a bumpy road. And you will feel every bump with this car. Test drive it on the expressway and you will really notice the noise. The interior is made of cheap plastic and rattles as it is not fully secured to the dash. The air is loud. The biggest problem of all is the oil consumption. I have to refill the oil every 2000 miles. This all started after about 10,000 being on the car ( after 2 oil changes.). It has gotten worse over time. Ive talked to the dealership and Subaru of America who say they can do nothing for me and that it is within Acceptable levels/specifications. After doing research on the internet i hAve found this is a very common issue with this car, and ive noticed it in several posts here. This was my first Subaru and sadly will be my last, especially with the poor customer service i have received over this issue. Buyers beware!

I owned a 2001 Forester, which I sold after 11 years and 250K miles. I loved every nut and bolt of it, so I was excited to see the redesigned Impreza with improved MPG. No way. The gas mileage averages 25-26 city and 28-29 highway; this is barely improved over the Forester. The car burns oil between oil changes, not as bad as some owners have reported, but about 1 quart between each change. The car is so shabbily and cheaply made, Subaru should be embarrassed--road noise, rattles and squeaks; one of the screws that holds the license tag has come loose since the day I bought the car, and the headlamp assembly has fallen off twice. The radio is awful--the volume goes to zero whenever it's turned off--and the headrest had to be removed because it hits the back of my head and pitches my head forward. I can't wait to be rid of it.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 Subaru Impreza offered a decent level of built-in tech for its time. Standard features included a basic audio system with a CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims, like the Premium and Limited, added an upgraded audio system with iPod connectivity, Bluetooth phone connectivity, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. The Limited trim also featured an available navigation system.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern cars. Stability control, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and a suite of airbags were standard. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available on this model year.

Safety features included front, side, and curtain airbags, as well as whiplash protection front seats. The 2012 Impreza received good crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The IIHS awarded it a "Top Safety Pick" rating. NHTSA ratings generally consisted of 4 or 5 stars in various categories, but consulting NHTSA's specific vehicle safety ratings webpage is recommended for precise details. Optional features were primarily related to the trim level, such as the upgraded audio system, leather seats, and automatic climate control on the Limited trim. The Sport trim offered unique styling elements and a slightly sportier suspension setup.

2012 Subaru Impreza Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 Subaru Impreza ranged from approximately $17,500 for the base model to around $22,500 for a fully-equipped Limited trim. Current used market prices typically range from $7,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. Depreciation has been moderate, thanks to Subaru's reputation for reliability and the desirability of its standard AWD. Resale value is influenced by maintenance history, overall condition, and geographic location (AWD is more valuable in snowy regions). Lower mileage examples with clean titles command higher prices.

2012 Subaru Impreza Cost of Ownership

The 2012 Subaru Impreza is generally economical to own. Insurance costs are typically moderate. Fuel economy is decent for an AWD vehicle. Maintenance costs are reasonable, though potential oil consumption issues could increase expenses. Repair costs are average, with parts readily available. Long-term, the CVT transmission might require attention, adding to ownership costs. Overall, it's not the cheapest compact car to own, but the added benefit of AWD makes it a reasonable value proposition.

2012 Subaru Impreza Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 Subaru Impreza is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 Subaru Impreza Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2012 Subaru Impreza competed with vehicles like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, and Hyundai Elantra. In terms of performance, the Impreza's 148-hp engine lags behind some rivals offering more powerful options. The Mazda3 provides a more engaging driving experience. Features are comparable, though the Impreza's base trim can feel spartan compared to a Civic or Corolla. Reliability is generally good, similar to the Toyota Corolla, but the Honda Civic has a slightly better reputation. The Hyundai Elantra offers a more stylish interior and exterior design.

Price-wise, the Impreza was competitive, especially considering the standard AWD. However, if AWD isn't a necessity, the Mazda3 offers a better blend of performance and handling. If fuel economy and reliability are paramount, the Toyota Corolla is a strong contender. For those seeking a more upscale interior, the Hyundai Elantra offers more features for the price. Therefore, if AWD is the main requirement, the Impreza is a solid choice. Otherwise, alternatives like the Mazda3 or Corolla might be better options depending on individual priorities. The Nissan Sentra of the same year is also another alternative but might not be as appealing regarding overall driving experience.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 Subaru Impreza a Good Sedan?

The 2012 Subaru Impreza is ideal for drivers who prioritize all-wheel drive for enhanced traction and safety in various weather conditions. It's a practical choice for those living in areas with snow or rain. Whether it's worth buying depends on individual needs and budget. A used 2012 Impreza can be a good value if well-maintained and inspected for potential oil consumption or CVT issues. The Premium or Limited trims offer more desirable features than the base model. If AWD is not essential, other compact cars might offer better performance or features for a similar price. Check maintenance records and pre-purchase inspection before committing to a purchase.

Solid choice

Purchased this car used in 2023. Right from the start had issues with the A/C compressor. It went out and I had it replaced with a used one to save a bit and it immediately went out again after a week. Mistakenly, I had an another used compressor put in and it proceeded to essentially blow up and damage my battery and belts. I guess there is an issue with the part for this model year. Otherwise I have not had any crazy issues other than regular maintenance costs. I absolutely love this car for its storage ability. It's small enough to handle city driving and small parking spots, but large enough to fit everything you need to carry. I fit all of my furniture and belongings in this car when moving. As for comfort, the heated seats are a great feature, however, I do find the seats gets quite uncomfortable after driving for more than a few hours. I drive this car back and forth to work daily and have no problem with its performance. Gets pretty good gas mileage for mostly city trips (24mpg). You can feel each and every bump that this car goes over, but it's not anything unbearable.

My Fifth Subaru in a Row

This is the first Imprezza we have bought. I loved the four Foresters that we had previously, but this time we choose the Imprezza because it is lower to the ground. My husband is a paraplegic and he was having trouble transferring from his wheelchair to the car seat. We choose the Imprezza to make it easier for him to get into and out of the car. As with all our other Subarus, it is an easy car to drive and to live with. I do miss the slightly more cargo space that we had in the Foresters, but that is my only criticism. We are happy with the Imprezza and find no real fault with it...just our wish for a bit more cargo space.
