The 2022 Jeep Wrangler continues a legendary off-road tradition, tracing its roots back to the World War II-era Willys MB. It's a body-on-frame SUV available in two-door and four-door (Unlimited) configurations. Key trims include the Sport, Sahara, Rubicon, and High Altitude. Pricing ranges from approximately $30,000 to over $60,000, depending on configuration and options. The Wrangler's unmatched off-road capability, iconic design, and open-air driving experience are major factors in its enduring popularity.
The Good

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler excels in off-road performance, thanks to its solid axles and available four-wheel-drive systems. Its iconic design provides an emotional connection for enthusiasts. Practical buyers appreciate its capability and ruggedness, while others enjoy the open-air experience. However, comfort and fuel efficiency are not its strongest suits compared to other SUVs.

The Bad

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler's weaknesses include compromised on-road handling, a less refined ride compared to crossover SUVs, and subpar fuel economy. Wind noise at highway speeds can be significant. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting electrical issues and drivetrain problems. Watch out for potential leaks and ensure proper maintenance of off-road components.

Analysis

What Problems Does the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Have?

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler, like previous model years, has had its share of reported problems. Common issues include electrical problems, such as the Uconnect system malfunctioning or experiencing glitches. Some owners have reported issues with the powertrain, including transmission problems and occasional engine misfires. Leaks, particularly from the hardtop or soft top, are also frequently mentioned.

Recalls have been issued for various reasons, including issues with the rearview camera, airbag deployment, and fuel line leaks. It's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls affecting a specific VIN.

Long-term reliability can be a concern. The Wrangler's off-road-focused design, while contributing to its capability, can also lead to accelerated wear and tear on certain components. Specifically, the suspension, steering, and drivetrain may require more frequent maintenance if the vehicle is regularly used for off-roading. Some owners have also noted premature rusting, particularly in areas exposed to road salt. Previous model years (e.g., 2018-2021) had similar issues, so it is important to research specific problems reported for the 2022 model year before purchasing.

How long will the 2022 Jeep Wrangler last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2022 Jeep Wrangler can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles, potentially exceeding that with exceptional care. This translates to roughly 10-15 years of service for the average driver. However, longevity is heavily dependent on maintenance habits and usage. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and addressing minor issues promptly are crucial. Wranglers used primarily for off-roading may experience shorter lifespans due to increased stress on mechanical components. Weaknesses can emerge over time, including wear on suspension components, ball joints, and drivetrain parts. Rust, especially in northern climates, can also become a significant concern.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler offers a range of tech, entertainment, and safety features. The Uconnect infotainment system is available with screen sizes ranging from 5 to 8.4 inches, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Navigation is optional. Available entertainment features include an Alpine premium sound system.

Standard safety features are relatively basic, including electronic stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags. Optional driver-assistance features include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-path detection, forward collision warning, and adaptive cruise control. A rearview camera is standard.

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) for the 2022 Wrangler are generally mixed. While it performs adequately in some crash tests, certain tests have revealed potential safety concerns, particularly related to side-impact protection and rollover risk. It's important to review the latest safety ratings from both organizations before making a purchase decision. Availability of advanced safety features varies by trim level, with higher trims typically offering more options.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Prices and Market Value

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler had a starting MSRP of around $30,000, with higher trims like the Rubicon and High Altitude exceeding $60,000. On the used market, prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and trim level. Expect to find used 2022 Wranglers ranging from the mid-$20,000s to the high $50,000s. Wranglers generally hold their value relatively well due to their popularity and strong demand, especially for well-equipped Rubicon models. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, accident history, and the presence of desirable options like a hardtop, upgraded infotainment system, and off-road accessories. Depreciation is slower compared to many other SUVs.

2022 Jeep Wrangler Cost of Ownership

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums can be higher than average due to the Wrangler's higher accident rate and potential for off-road damage. Fuel economy is subpar, especially with the V6 engine. Maintenance costs are typical for a vehicle of its type, but repairs can be more expensive due to specialized parts and labor, especially for off-road components. Long-term ownership costs can add up due to potential reliability issues and the need for regular maintenance, making it less economical than some alternatives.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2022 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other Minivan?

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler competes with vehicles like the Ford Bronco, Toyota 4Runner, and Land Rover Defender. In terms of off-road performance, the Wrangler and Bronco are closely matched, both offering impressive capabilities. The 4Runner is also a capable off-roader, while the Defender provides a more luxurious and refined experience. The Wrangler's on-road handling and ride quality are generally inferior to the Bronco and Defender. Feature-wise, the Bronco offers comparable technology and safety features. The 4Runner lags behind in terms of modern technology.

Reliability is a mixed bag. The 4Runner is known for its excellent reliability, while the Wrangler and Bronco have had some reported issues. The Defender's reliability is also a concern. Price-wise, the Wrangler is generally more affordable than the Defender, but can be similarly priced to the Bronco depending on the trim and options. If off-road capability is the primary concern, the Wrangler and Bronco are excellent choices. For better on-road comfort and reliability, the Toyota 4Runner is a solid alternative. The Land Rover Defender offers a more premium experience but comes with a higher price tag and potential reliability concerns. A better all-around alternative depends on individual priorities.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Jeep Wrangler a Good Minivan?

The 2022 Jeep Wrangler is ideal for off-road enthusiasts who prioritize capability and iconic styling above all else. It's worth buying if you understand its compromises in on-road comfort and fuel economy. A used Wrangler can be a good value, but thoroughly inspect it for off-road damage and maintenance history. The Rubicon trim is highly desirable for serious off-roaders. The 4xe provides a plug-in hybrid option for those seeking better fuel efficiency. If you prioritize on-road comfort or reliability, consider alternatives like the Toyota 4Runner or Ford Bronco (understanding Bronco reliability concerns). Consider buying new if the latest technology and warranty are important, otherwise, a well-maintained used model offers a significant cost savings.

Read the Owners Manual, Often.

Visibility and size are what I need. 4WD, clearance for snow. Rather tight interior, not suitable for more than two. Auto Park is very confusing. Not auto parallel Park. Car will stop while backing out of parking space, won't move if a somewhat complex procedure is not followed.

Really great car

Just purchased the Wrangler JL with the 2.0 turbo engine. Very comfortable car with lots of new safety features. We got the one touch slide roof. It feels like we have a convertible but we can close it in 10 seconds which is a great feature in FL with our famous pop up showers and thunderstorms.
