What Problems Does the 2023 Volvo XC90 Have?

While the 2023 Volvo XC90 is generally considered reliable, some frequently reported problems and potential long-term reliability concerns include issues with the infotainment system (Sensus), such as slow response times, glitches, and connectivity problems. Some owners have also reported issues with the air suspension system (if equipped), leading to costly repairs.

Recalls can vary, so checking the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date information is essential. Common recall areas for recent Volvo models have included potential issues with the fuel pump, braking system, and airbag deployment.

Long-term reliability hinges on consistent maintenance. The complex electronics and advanced driver-assistance systems require specialized diagnostics and repairs. Older models of the XC90 (pre-2016) had some transmission issues reported, but these are largely addressed in the newer generations. However, it's crucial to have any used XC90 inspected by a qualified mechanic before purchase, paying close attention to the hybrid system (if applicable), as battery replacements can be expensive. Regular software updates are also crucial for maintaining the functionality of the car's systems.

How long will the 2023 Volvo XC90 last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2023 Volvo XC90 can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Expect at least 10 years of service with proper care. Long-term durability is generally good, but potential weaknesses include the aforementioned air suspension (if equipped) and electronic components. Regular fluid changes (oil, transmission, coolant) are crucial. The timing belt (if applicable, though many newer models use chains) should be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Keeping up with software updates will also maximize the lifespan of the vehicle's systems.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 Volvo XC90 boasts a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The centerpiece is the 9-inch Sensus Connect touchscreen infotainment system, which integrates navigation, audio controls, and vehicle settings. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Standard driver-assistance features include lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. Adaptive cruise control and Pilot Assist (Volvo's semi-autonomous driving system) are often available as optional features. A head-up display is also offered on higher trims.

Safety is a Volvo hallmark, and the XC90 excels in this area. It typically receives excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Standard safety features include multiple airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. Optional features like a 360-degree surround-view camera and park assist further enhance safety. The Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system is a popular optional entertainment feature, providing exceptional audio quality. Some trims also offer a built-in air purifier to improve cabin air quality. The Google built-in operating system is now featured in the 2023 model year, replacing the Sensus system. This allows for Google Assistant, Google Maps, and the Google Play Store to be natively integrated into the car's system.

2023 Volvo XC90 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2023 Volvo XC90 ranged from approximately $56,000 to $75,000, depending on the trim and options. As of late 2024, used market prices typically range from $45,000 to $65,000, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation is moderate for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, maintenance history, and optional equipment. Models with desirable features like the Bowers & Wilkins sound system and advanced driver-assistance systems tend to hold their value better. The plug-in hybrid versions might depreciate slightly faster due to battery degradation concerns and evolving EV technology.

2023 Volvo XC90 Cost of Ownership

The 2023 Volvo XC90 is moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs are reasonable for a mid-size SUV, especially with the hybrid versions. Maintenance and repair costs can be higher than non-luxury brands due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership costs are influenced by the vehicle's reliability and the owner's maintenance habits. Regular servicing is crucial to minimize expensive repairs down the line. The Recharge model may have higher battery replacement costs in the long run.

How Does the 2023 Volvo XC90 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 Volvo XC90 competes with other mid-size luxury SUVs like the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE, Audi Q7, Acura MDX, and Lexus RX.

Performance: The XC90's performance is adequate but not as sporty as the BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne. The Recharge plug-in hybrid offers competitive acceleration.

Features: The XC90 excels in safety features and offers a stylish interior, rivaling the Mercedes-Benz GLE in terms of luxury. The Acura MDX provides more value for the money in terms of standard features.

Reliability: The XC90's reliability is generally good, but it might not match the Lexus RX's reputation for bulletproof reliability. The Audi Q7 can have similar reliability issues related to its complex electronics.

Price: The XC90's pricing is competitive within the luxury SUV segment, but the Acura MDX offers a more affordable entry point. The BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE can quickly become more expensive with options.

Alternatives: If sporty performance is a priority, the BMW X5 or Porsche Cayenne are better choices. If reliability is paramount, the Lexus RX is a strong contender. For a more budget-friendly option with many features, consider the Acura MDX. The Genesis GV80 is another compelling alternative offering luxury features at a competitive price. The Land Rover Defender offers more off-road capability.

Consider buying used to save on depreciation, but ensure a thorough inspection by a qualified mechanic. The Recharge plug-in hybrid is a good option for those wanting better fuel economy and a bit more power. Avoid the base Momentum trim if you desire more luxurious features; opt for the R-Design or Inscription. Be mindful of potential infotainment system quirks and higher repair costs compared to non-luxury brands.

Never had any major problems with the car.

Never had any major problems with the car. Mostly software problems but they were quickly fixed with a restart/reset of the system. The ride is bery comfortable and on long drives a pleasure to sit it. The place this car has is huge and every passenger has largly enough space. The car is slightly underpowered for such a heavy tank (only 235PS) but is still enough to have a comfortable ride (low RPMs) on the highway. I average 37-33mpg which gives me about 700 miles of range and if you’re not in a hurry and drive about 50-60mph you can even go up to 900 miles on the highway (I drive the mild-hybrid). I feel also safe driving it, thanks to all the assistants it has and the safety-history.
