What Problems Does the 2016 Tesla Model S Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Tesla Model S include issues with the touchscreen display, such as delamination, yellowing, or complete failure. The air suspension system has also been a source of complaints, with reports of premature wear and failure of the air struts. Battery degradation is a long-term concern for all electric vehicles, and some 2016 Model S owners have reported noticeable reductions in range over time.
Recalls for the 2016 Model S have addressed issues such as seat belt failures, front suspension issues and problems with the charging equipment. It's important to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to verify if all applicable recalls have been addressed.
Long-term reliability concerns also revolve around the drive units (motors), with some owners experiencing premature failures. The door handles, while aesthetically pleasing, have been known to malfunction. While Tesla has made improvements over the years, early Model S vehicles, including the 2016 model, may be more prone to these types of issues. Regular maintenance and proactive monitoring of battery health can help mitigate some of these concerns.

How long will the 2016 Tesla Model S last?

A 2016 Tesla Model S, with good maintenance, could reasonably achieve 200,000 miles or more. However, factors like battery degradation, suspension wear, and potential electronic issues can impact longevity. Regular software updates are critical for maintaining system performance. The battery's health is the biggest factor in long-term value; proactively managing charging habits (avoiding frequent deep discharges and keeping the battery within optimal charge ranges) will extend its life. Weaknesses over time include potential battery replacements, air suspension repairs, and touchscreen failures.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Tesla Model S boasts a 17-inch touchscreen that controls almost all vehicle functions, including navigation, media, climate, and vehicle settings. Entertainment features include streaming music, internet radio, and a web browser. Driver-assistance features are headlined by Autopilot, which offers adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.
Optional features included enhanced Autopilot with more advanced self-driving capabilities (though not full self-driving) and Smart Summon. The Premium Upgrades Package added features like self-presenting door handles, premium audio, and leather upholstery.
Safety features include eight airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, and anti-lock brakes. The Model S received excellent crash-test ratings from both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In NHTSA testing, it earned a 5-star overall safety rating. The IIHS gave it a "Good" rating in most crash tests. The Autopilot system enhances safety, but drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control.

2016 Tesla Model S Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Tesla Model S ranged from around $70,000 to over $130,000 depending on the trim and options. As of late 2023/early 2024, used market prices typically range from $30,000 to $50,000, varying with mileage, battery health, and condition. Depreciation has been significant, but Tesla's brand cachet and the ongoing demand for EVs help maintain resale value compared to some other luxury cars. Factors impacting resale include battery degradation, accident history, and the availability of newer Tesla models.

2016 Tesla Model S Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2016 Tesla Model S can be higher than average due to the car's value and complex technology. "Fuel" costs are significantly lower due to electric operation. Maintenance costs are generally lower than gasoline cars, but repairs, especially battery replacements or touchscreen repairs, can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs depend heavily on battery health and repair frequency. While fuel savings are significant, potential for costly repairs makes ownership neither particularly economical nor excessively costly.

2016 Tesla Model S Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Tesla Model S is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Tesla Model S Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2016 Tesla Model S competes with other luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8. In terms of performance, the Model S offers superior acceleration thanks to its electric powertrain. It also leads in technology, particularly its Autopilot system and large touchscreen interface. However, traditional luxury cars offer a more refined interior and potentially better ride comfort. Reliability is where the Model S falls behind its German rivals, which generally have a stronger track record.
In terms of price, the Model S was competitive when new, but used prices can be attractive compared to newer EVs. Alternatives to consider include the newer Tesla Model 3 or Model Y if you prioritize newer technology and better reliability, or the Porsche Taycan for superior performance and handling. The BMW i4 is also a good electric alternative with more traditional luxury features. For those prioritizing reliability and a plush ride over cutting-edge tech, the Mercedes-Benz EQS is a good choice. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities and budget.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Tesla Model S a Good Hatchback?

The 2016 Tesla Model S is ideal for tech-savvy buyers who prioritize performance, range, and electric vehicle ownership. It's worth buying used if the price is right, and you're willing to accept potential reliability risks and higher repair costs. Consider purchasing from a private seller who has maintained the vehicle well and can provide detailed service records. Focus on models with lower mileage and a healthy battery, ideally those that have received recent software updates and battery health checks. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified Tesla technician is strongly recommended. Buying extended warranty can mitigate risks of repair.

Best car I have ever owned or even driven!

Driving this car ruins the experience for all other cars. The quickness in the performance model is unmatched, the interior is lush. I kinda wish it stood out a bit from the model 3 from the exterior, but I LOVE this car.

Incredible!

Roomy seating, amazing performance and functionality, large rear hatch area. Don't be afraid of the plug-in life! The ongoing updates freshen the car's abilities month after month. Very cool and reliable car!

Best car

Best car I have own worth every penny. The autopilot is one of its best features along with the fun entertainment system built in. I would recommend this for everyone but grab a model 3

Like Driving an Android and iPhone!

Best care bare none I have ever owned and driven. The Full Self Driving and Enhanced Autopilot are game changers. Add lifetime supercharging and road trips are not only free from gas charges they are fun again! Rush hour traffic isn't so stressful due to the HOV stickers and the Autopilot doing the stopping and starting if needed.

Best car ever

Great car! Gas savings, and fun to drive. Extremely fast. And extremely quick. I would definitely own again and again. And would recommend it .
