The Good
The 2016 BMW X1 offers a compelling mix of advantages. For the practical buyer, it provides good fuel efficiency, a spacious interior for its class, and BMW's reputation. Emotionally, it delivers a fun driving experience, stylish design, and the prestige of the BMW brand. Performance is strong thanks to its turbocharged engine, and the ride is comfortable.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2016 BMW X1 include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury vehicles. Some owners have reported issues with electronics and sensors. The ride can be firm, and the back seat, while spacious for the class, might be tight for taller adults on long trips. Also, be aware of potential oil leaks, as is common with many BMW models.

How Does the 2016 BMW X1 Compare to Other Wagon?
Alternatives to consider include: the Lexus NX for superior reliability, the Audi Q3 for a more comfortable ride, or the Mercedes-Benz GLA for similar performance and features. The Acura RDX, while slightly larger, offers more space and a reputation for reliability. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities. If driving experience is paramount, the X1 is a good choice. If reliability is the main concern, the NX is a better option. If budget is a factor, consider a lightly used, well-maintained Acura RDX or Lexus NX.

The NIGHTMARE continue$$$!My last review was March 24th and I hoped that would be it. However my "Engineering Masterpiece" had other ideas! Got a warning message about diminished performance and limped it to the dealer. The issue was a turbo wastegate actuator which would be $2300 to repair and is required to prevent possible damage. Also the motor mounts are leaking and that will be about $3700 to ensure the car doesn't vibrate apart. The sunroof shade also caught in the tracks and that will be $2800 to pull the sunroof down and put a new shade in. This on a 2016 X1 which has 108,000 miles on it and is used for commuting mostly. The vehicle was bought from BMW as a certified pre-owned but that fact is absolutely useless as every failure has occurred shortly after the warranty expired. None of the failures could have been prevented by maintenance as they are caused by design flaws from BMW and have been supposedly corrected (although that does me absolutely no good as they won't budge on any of the cost!) I paid $26K for this X1 but my repair bills are near $10k now in less than 4 years. Shameful! Thanks to Cars.com for letting me post this review so others can hold on to their hard-earned money and find more reliable cars!

Bring Money With!I've been a Lexus owner most of my life, but my daughter wanted a car before college so we worked out a deal. Found a 2016 with low miles with BMW's certified pre-owned coverage and added an extended warranty just to be safe. Issues with the shifter were covered twice by warranty luckily, but the moon roof cover came off it's tracks (common issue) and wasn't covered, so she just lives with it. She was driving it recently and a "low coolant" warning came on. Luckily she pulled over and we had it towed to be safe since there was steam from the engine compartment. Local dealer said it was a bad gasket in the oil filter housing (common complaint again!) and the entire housing had to be replaced at a total cost of $2109! $632 for the part and $200 an hour for labor! The gasket deteriorates due to heat coming off the engine. BMW has now changed the design of the part, but this does me absolutely no good. My daughter now sees what I warned her about, and will be looking for something else after graduation. (PS. The car doesn't even come with a dipstick so you're stuck with the dealer letting you know via the app if there's an issue.) Buyer beware!

I've never been more hesitant buying a carThe X1 sounds like a diesel motor when you start it, they could've def made it more comfortable, the brakes are really mushy, can only use super unleaded. The plusses are it's a BMW girls think I'm rich, Lighting on the interior at night is wild, performance is amazing, buying used saves tons of money. It's a thin line to buy this car, I feel like I got lucky with the price I paid and I'll be in a good position by the time it's paid off, but pricing has to be right on this car and it has to be in good shape mechanically. Buy from a reputable dealer because I wouldn't want to imagine how much it would cost to maintain/repair a poorly maintained one of these.

Super fun, reliable, and easy on the eyes! This is my first X1 and it won’t be my last! I love the size, performance, and interior. I’ve owned other BMWs in the past and this one does not disappoint! I can fit a ton in the back and it gets really gas mileage. So far I haven’t had major issues with it- just properly maintain it and all will be well.

Comfortable and SafeWhile I’ve only had it for a few weeks I can tell this car is going to last! It’s so comfortable and stylish. Very roomy on the inside without having to drive a tank! I live in the PNW so having a reliable car that can keep up during our winter weather is a must.

Beautiful, economical rideGreat vehicle for the money. It is BMW quality, but with a peppy turbocharged 4-cyl, it gets up and goes and goes a long way on a gallon.

Great SUVThis is a practical SUV. It has all safety features but no blind spot sensing. But I am very satisfying with this car . The turbo charged engine can deliver the power you need.

Love this X1 but ...I love my 2016 X1. Would have given a 5 on all categories, however I find the sun/moon roof blind of a poor quality, right in the first month of my purchased that blind got stuck and would no longer close, took the vehicle to a BMW service center which cost me $1800 to replace it. Other than that I find the car great for its value. Would like to purchase a brand new X1 in the near future.

Love at first sight does exist! From when I seen my car online I was in love. I was super duper happy to be able to buy it the same day.
