The 2016 BMW X1 marks the start of the second generation (F48) of this subcompact luxury SUV. It boasts a more traditional SUV design than its predecessor. Available trims include the base xDrive28i. The 2016 X1 is popular due to its blend of BMW's driving dynamics, practicality, and luxurious features in a smaller, more affordable package. The original MSRP started around $35,000.
The Good

The 2016 BMW X1 offers a compelling mix of advantages. For the practical buyer, it provides good fuel efficiency, a spacious interior for its class, and BMW's reputation. Emotionally, it delivers a fun driving experience, stylish design, and the prestige of the BMW brand. Performance is strong thanks to its turbocharged engine, and the ride is comfortable.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2016 BMW X1 include higher maintenance costs compared to non-luxury vehicles. Some owners have reported issues with electronics and sensors. The ride can be firm, and the back seat, while spacious for the class, might be tight for taller adults on long trips. Also, be aware of potential oil leaks, as is common with many BMW models.

What Problems Does the 2016 BMW X1 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 BMW X1 often involve the electronic systems. Issues with the iDrive system, sensors, and warning lights are common complaints. Some owners have reported problems with the cooling system, including thermostat failures. Oil leaks are a potential long-term reliability concern, particularly as the vehicle ages; regular checks and maintenance are crucial. Recalls for the 2016 X1 have addressed issues such as potential fuel leaks and problems with the side airbags. Prospective buyers should check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA to verify that all recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability can be improved with regular maintenance, including timely oil changes and fluid checks. Early signs of potential issues should be addressed promptly to prevent more significant problems down the road. While the engine is generally reliable, keeping an eye on oil consumption is recommended. Transmission issues are less common, but regular fluid changes are still advised as part of preventative maintenance. Suspension components may also require attention over time, especially if the vehicle is driven frequently on rough roads.

How long will the 2016 BMW X1 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 BMW X1 can realistically provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. Regular oil changes, timely fluid replacements, and addressing minor issues promptly are critical. Long-term durability can be affected by factors such as driving conditions and climate. Weaknesses over time typically include electronic component failures, oil leaks, and potential wear on suspension components. Neglecting maintenance can significantly shorten the lifespan and lead to costly repairs. A well-maintained X1 can remain a reliable vehicle for many years.

This is my first X1 and it won’t be my last! I love the size, performance, and interior. I’ve owned other BMWs in the past and this one does not disappoint! I can fit a ton in the back and it gets really gas mileage. So far I haven’t had major issues with it- just properly maintain it and all will be well.
Elany
While I’ve only had it for a few weeks I can tell this car is going to last! It’s so comfortable and stylish. Very roomy on the inside without having to drive a tank! I live in the PNW so having a reliable car that can keep up during our winter weather is a must.
Charliegj
Great vehicle for the money. It is BMW quality, but with a peppy turbocharged 4-cyl, it gets up and goes and goes a long way on a gallon.
Negative Owner Reviews
IleneL
My first expensive car and I hated it. Suspension felt cheap, technology was horrible and the interior was not comfortable at all. Charged for every extra. Also the dealership was not nice - BMW Freeport NY - salesman handled a few customers at same time and just kept us waiting and waiting and waiting.

2016 BMW X1 Prices and Market Value

The 2016 BMW X1 had a starting MSRP of around $35,000 when new. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $25,000, depending on mileage, condition, and options. The X1 depreciates at a moderate rate, typical for a luxury vehicle. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and the presence of desirable options packages. Models with lower mileage and a clean accident record command higher prices. Regular maintenance and a complete service history are essential for maximizing resale value. Demand for subcompact luxury SUVs also influences the price.

2016 BMW X1 Cost of Ownership

The 2016 BMW X1 is relatively costly to own long-term compared to non-luxury brands. Insurance rates are higher due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs are moderate, with decent fuel economy for its class. However, maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially as the vehicle ages, due to the use of specialized parts and the complexity of the systems. Routine maintenance is crucial to prevent more costly repairs down the road. Budgeting for higher-than-average maintenance is recommended.

2016 BMW X1 Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 BMW X1 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 BMW X1 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2016 BMW X1 competes with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Lexus NX. In terms of performance, the X1 offers a more engaging driving experience than the Q3 and NX, but the GLA offers similar pep. Feature-wise, the X1 is comparable to its rivals, with available options like navigation and driver-assistance features. Reliability is where the X1 falls slightly behind; the Lexus NX generally enjoys a better reliability reputation. Price-wise, the X1 is in the same ballpark as its competitors.

Alternatives to consider include: the Lexus NX for superior reliability, the Audi Q3 for a more comfortable ride, or the Mercedes-Benz GLA for similar performance and features. The Acura RDX, while slightly larger, offers more space and a reputation for reliability. Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual priorities. If driving experience is paramount, the X1 is a good choice. If reliability is the main concern, the NX is a better option. If budget is a factor, consider a lightly used, well-maintained Acura RDX or Lexus NX.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 BMW X1 a Good Wagon?

The 2016 BMW X1 is ideal for those seeking a subcompact luxury SUV with a fun driving experience and a practical interior. It's worth buying used if you're prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. Look for models with a well-documented service history and avoid those with high mileage or accident damage. The xDrive28i trim offers a good balance of features and value. Consider the Premium or Technology packages for added amenities. Ensure all recalls have been addressed. If reliability is a top priority, consider alternatives like the Lexus NX. If you prioritize driving dynamics and don't mind the potential for higher maintenance, the X1 is a solid choice.

The NIGHTMARE continue$$$!

My last review was March 24th and I hoped that would be it. However my "Engineering Masterpiece" had other ideas! Got a warning message about diminished performance and limped it to the dealer. The issue was a turbo wastegate actuator which would be $2300 to repair and is required to prevent possible damage. Also the motor mounts are leaking and that will be about $3700 to ensure the car doesn't vibrate apart. The sunroof shade also caught in the tracks and that will be $2800 to pull the sunroof down and put a new shade in. This on a 2016 X1 which has 108,000 miles on it and is used for commuting mostly. The vehicle was bought from BMW as a certified pre-owned but that fact is absolutely useless as every failure has occurred shortly after the warranty expired. None of the failures could have been prevented by maintenance as they are caused by design flaws from BMW and have been supposedly corrected (although that does me absolutely no good as they won't budge on any of the cost!) I paid $26K for this X1 but my repair bills are near $10k now in less than 4 years. Shameful! Thanks to Cars.com for letting me post this review so others can hold on to their hard-earned money and find more reliable cars!

Bring Money With!

I've been a Lexus owner most of my life, but my daughter wanted a car before college so we worked out a deal. Found a 2016 with low miles with BMW's certified pre-owned coverage and added an extended warranty just to be safe. Issues with the shifter were covered twice by warranty luckily, but the moon roof cover came off it's tracks (common issue) and wasn't covered, so she just lives with it. She was driving it recently and a "low coolant" warning came on. Luckily she pulled over and we had it towed to be safe since there was steam from the engine compartment. Local dealer said it was a bad gasket in the oil filter housing (common complaint again!) and the entire housing had to be replaced at a total cost of $2109! $632 for the part and $200 an hour for labor! The gasket deteriorates due to heat coming off the engine. BMW has now changed the design of the part, but this does me absolutely no good. My daughter now sees what I warned her about, and will be looking for something else after graduation. (PS. The car doesn't even come with a dipstick so you're stuck with the dealer letting you know via the app if there's an issue.) Buyer beware!

I've never been more hesitant buying a car

The X1 sounds like a diesel motor when you start it, they could've def made it more comfortable, the brakes are really mushy, can only use super unleaded. The plusses are it's a BMW girls think I'm rich, Lighting on the interior at night is wild, performance is amazing, buying used saves tons of money. It's a thin line to buy this car, I feel like I got lucky with the price I paid and I'll be in a good position by the time it's paid off, but pricing has to be right on this car and it has to be in good shape mechanically. Buy from a reputable dealer because I wouldn't want to imagine how much it would cost to maintain/repair a poorly maintained one of these.

Great SUV

This is a practical SUV. It has all safety features but no blind spot sensing. But I am very satisfying with this car . The turbo charged engine can deliver the power you need.

Love this X1 but ...

I love my 2016 X1. Would have given a 5 on all categories, however I find the sun/moon roof blind of a poor quality, right in the first month of my purchased that blind got stuck and would no longer close, took the vehicle to a BMW service center which cost me $1800 to replace it. Other than that I find the car great for its value. Would like to purchase a brand new X1 in the near future.
