The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a full-size, three-row luxury SUV, known for its blend of passenger comfort and rugged capability. Introduced in 2006, the GL-Class aimed to offer Mercedes-Benz luxury in a larger format. Key trims include the GL350 BlueTEC (diesel), GL450, and GL550. New, the GL-Class ranged roughly from $60,000 to $85,000. It stands out for its spacious interior, comfortable ride, and off-road ability uncommon in its class.
The Good

The 2010 GL-Class offers robust performance, especially with the V8 engines, and a comfortable, luxurious ride. Its design is undeniably Mercedes-Benz, appealing to those seeking prestige. Practically, it provides ample passenger and cargo space, and the diesel option provides reasonable fuel efficiency for its size. Emotionally, it's a statement of success and capability.

The Bad

The 2010 GL-Class can be expensive to maintain and repair, with air suspension issues being a common concern. Fuel economy, outside the diesel model, is poor. Electrical problems and oil leaks are also potential headaches. Prospective buyers should get a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic familiar with Mercedes-Benz SUVs.

What Problems Does the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Have?

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, like many luxury SUVs, has its share of reported problems and reliability concerns. Air suspension issues are very common, leading to costly repairs related to compressors, struts, and air leaks. Oil leaks, particularly from the valve cover gaskets and oil cooler lines, are frequently reported. Electrical glitches, affecting systems like the navigation, entertainment, and power windows, also surface regularly.

Specific recalls for the 2010 model year may vary depending on the source consulted. It's essential to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the most up-to-date recall information based on the VIN. Common recall items for this generation sometimes included fuel filter flange cracking leading to fire risk, and issues with brake assist system malfunction.

Long-term reliability can be a concern due to the complexity of the vehicle's systems. The diesel engine (GL350 BlueTEC) can experience issues related to the emissions control system, including the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and AdBlue system. Maintaining the GL-Class according to Mercedes-Benz's recommended service schedule is crucial, but even with meticulous care, the potential for expensive repairs remains relatively high as the vehicle ages. Some owners have reported issues with the transfer case and transmission as well.

How long will the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class last?

With diligent maintenance, a 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class can realistically reach 200,000 miles or more. However, exceeding this mileage often requires significant investment in repairs. Expect 10-15 years of service, assuming consistent maintenance. The air suspension system is a known weak point, often requiring replacement within this timeframe. Proper fluid changes (engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant) are crucial for long-term durability. Neglecting maintenance will drastically shorten the vehicle's lifespan and lead to premature failures of major components.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class boasts a range of built-in tech, entertainment, and safety features, although some were optional. Standard features include a COMAND system with a central display screen (smaller screen on the GL350), a premium sound system, and Bluetooth connectivity. Higher trims like the GL550 added a navigation system and a rearview camera.

Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern standards. Standard safety features included antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, front and side airbags, and side curtain airbags covering all three rows. Optional features included blind-spot monitoring and parking sensors. Adaptive cruise control was available on some models.

Entertainment features included a CD player, satellite radio (optional), and rear-seat entertainment systems with DVD players and screens (optional).

Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) should be consulted for specific scores. Generally, the GL-Class performed well in crash tests, offering good protection for occupants. However, specific ratings can vary, so it's essential to verify the data for the 2010 model year from official sources. The safety features are considered advanced for its time.

2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Prices and Market Value

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class had an MSRP ranging from approximately $60,000 to $85,000 when new, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on condition, mileage, and location, but expect to find them in the range of $8,000 to $20,000.

Depreciation is significant for luxury SUVs like the GL-Class. Factors affecting resale value include maintenance records, condition (interior and exterior), mileage, and the specific trim level. Diesel models (GL350 BlueTEC) may hold their value slightly better due to fuel efficiency.

2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is generally considered costly. Insurance premiums are higher due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs can be substantial, especially for the gasoline-powered models. Maintenance and repairs are expensive, as parts and labor are premium. The air suspension and potential electrical issues contribute significantly to long-term ownership costs. While the diesel offers better fuel economy, its maintenance can also be pricey. This vehicle is not economical to own.

2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle MPV with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle MPV?

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class competes with other full-size luxury SUVs like the Cadillac Escalade, Lexus LX 570, and Land Rover Range Rover. In terms of performance, the GL-Class offers a good balance of power and handling, although the Escalade might feel more powerful, and the Range Rover is more capable off-road. Feature-wise, the GL-Class is competitive, but some rivals offer more advanced technology for the model year.

Reliability is where the GL-Class often falls short compared to the Lexus LX 570, which is known for its exceptional reliability. The Cadillac Escalade can also be less problematic than the GL-Class. Price-wise, used GL-Class models can be attractive, but potential maintenance costs need to be considered.

Alternatives to the 2010 GL-Class could include the Lexus LX 570 for superior reliability, or a newer Acura MDX (if three rows is a must) for a balance of features and reliability at a potentially lower long-term cost. If off-road capability is a priority, the Land Rover Range Rover is worth considering, but be prepared for similar or even higher maintenance costs.

Final Verdict: Is the 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle MPV?

The 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a spacious and luxurious SUV with three rows of seating and a capable all-wheel-drive system. It's worth buying *used* if you understand and are prepared for the potential for higher maintenance and repair costs. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is *essential*. The GL350 BlueTEC offers the best fuel economy, but all models should be carefully vetted for maintenance history. If reliability and low running costs are paramount, other options like a Lexus LX or a newer Acura MDX are better choices. Buy only if you are comfortable with potentially expensive repairs.

Great Diesel Designed Vehicle

I purchased this GL 350 Bluetec from a Mercedes dealership. It’s a great looking vehicle with tons of loaded features. It’s extremely comfortable and roomy. It also seats seven passengers. The performance of the Bluetec diesel engine is unbelievable. Has tons of torque and gets pretty decent MPG’s. Definitely the best SUV I’ve ever owned.

Money pit!!!

Being a certified mechanic I thought it wouldn’t be an issue buying even knowing the high maintenance costs before hand, however buyer beware! Mercedes have tons of electronic issues, every 3-6 months this car was costing me 3-5k in electronic repairs that I couldn’t do due to mercedes computer coding. I tried everything to make this a good car even removing the diesel emissions that nearly left me stranded across the country on vacation had to let it run 7 days straight to get home. In the end I saved myself over 20k doing most of the repairs myself but still spent 20k in repairs the dealer Had to do and after all of those repairs it broke 2 month after being fixed the most recent time and left myself and my daughter stranded on a mountain.
