The Good
The 2022 BRZ offers engaging performance due to its balanced chassis and responsive engine. Its sleek design appeals emotionally, while its improved reliability compared to the previous generation and reasonable fuel efficiency appeal to practical buyers. It represents excellent value for a true sports car experience.
The Bad
The 2022 BRZ's weaknesses include a somewhat cramped interior, especially in the rear seats. The engine, while improved, isn't a torque monster. Road noise can be intrusive on longer drives. Some owners report infotainment system glitches. Watch out for potential oil consumption issues, though less prevalent than the previous generation.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2022 Subaru BRZ Have?
Long-term reliability concerns might revolve around the engine's oil consumption, although the 2.4-liter engine is generally considered more robust than the previous 2.0-liter. Proper maintenance, including timely oil changes, is crucial for preventing potential issues. The direct injection system can also lead to carbon buildup over time, potentially affecting performance, although this is a common concern across many modern direct-injection engines and not necessarily BRZ-specific.
Early adopters should monitor for any emerging issues and proactively address them through regular servicing. Before purchasing a used 2022 BRZ, verify that all applicable recalls have been addressed by a Subaru dealer.
How long will the 2022 Subaru BRZ last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to some modern vehicles, prioritizing a pure driving experience. Automatic transmission models include Subaru's EyeSight driver-assistance suite, featuring adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and lane keeping assist.
Safety features include standard airbags, anti-lock brakes, and vehicle stability control. As for crash-test ratings, the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings should be consulted for the most up-to-date information. Depending on the specific model year and testing conditions, the BRZ may have varying safety ratings. Optional features are focused on aesthetics and performance enhancements rather than extensive tech upgrades. The standard sound system is adequate, but not exceptional, reflecting the car's focus on driving dynamics.

How Does the 2022 Subaru BRZ Compare to Other Sedan?
Compared to the Miata, the BRZ has a more practical trunk, but the Miata excels in open-air driving fun. Feature-wise, the BRZ and GR86 offer a similar set of standard equipment. Reliability is generally good for both the BRZ and GR86, while the Miata has a long-standing reputation for reliability. Price-wise, all three are similarly positioned, making them attractive sports car options.
Alternatives to consider, depending on priorities, include the Honda Civic Si (for a more practical and refined daily driver with sporty handling) or the Hyundai Veloster N (for more power and a unique hatchback design). The BRZ and GR86 stand out for their rear-wheel-drive purity and balanced handling, making them ideal choices for driving enthusiasts.

Final Verdict: Is the 2022 Subaru BRZ a Good Sedan?

Tremendous Value and Fun for the MoneyThe fun-to-dollar ratio is off the charts with the second-generation BRZ. The car offers tremendous handling, adequate power (a welcome upgrade from the first generation), great looks and quality fit and finish. I have the Limited edition with the upgraded interior and the seats are quite comfortable and the car is well set up for spirited driving. At this price point you aren't going to get a truly luxury interior, but the quality, appearance and comfort (but only for the front seat passengers!) that come with this car provide great value for the money. The rear seat is only suitable for carrying groceries, packages or small children. They are practically useless for holding adult passengers. Other quibbles are that the drink holders in the center console are in an awkward position and the sound system is really poor. If listening to music is an integral part of your driving experience, you will want to install an after-market system. Overall, however, this car is a home run. The driving experience takes me back to the days of the old British sports cars, but with massively improved performance, quality, comfort and reliability.
