The Good
The 2008 Jeep Compass offers an appealing entry point into the Jeep brand. Its affordability presents a strong value proposition for practical buyers. While not a high-performance vehicle, its compact size and available four-wheel drive offer some off-road capability, appealing to those with a sense of adventure. Its fuel efficiency is decent for its class.
The Bad
The 2008 Jeep Compass is known for its below-average build quality and interior materials. The continuously variable transmission (CVT) is a potential weak point, requiring careful inspection and maintenance records. Engine performance can feel underpowered, especially with the CVT. Reliability has been a concern, with some owners reporting frequent repairs.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2008 Jeep Compass Have?
Recalls have been issued for various issues, including potential airbag malfunctions and problems with the fuel system. Some owners have reported electrical issues, such as problems with the power windows and door locks.
Specific to the 2008 model year, issues related to the interior trim pieces falling apart and the dashboard cracking have been noted. Premature brake wear is also a frequently cited complaint. These issues contribute to higher long-term ownership costs due to the increased need for repairs and maintenance. Checking the vehicle history report for prior recalls and maintenance records is crucial before purchasing a used 2008 Jeep Compass.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Optional features included power windows and locks, cruise control, and remote keyless entry.
Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) were generally marginal. The Compass received mixed ratings, with some tests showing adequate protection and others indicating potential weaknesses, particularly in side-impact scenarios. The lack of modern safety technologies like blind-spot monitoring or automatic emergency braking makes it less competitive compared to newer vehicles. The focus was on basic safety features rather than advanced driver aids, which were not common in this vehicle segment at the time. The tech and safety features are very dated by today's standards.

How Does the 2008 Jeep Compass Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
In terms of features, the Compass offers a basic set of amenities, but lacks the advanced technologies found in some competitors. While the Compass may be initially cheaper, the long-term ownership costs, due to potential repairs, can negate that advantage.
Better alternatives include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 for their reliability and overall quality. The Mazda CX-7 offers a sportier driving experience. The Subaru Forester is also a good choice for its standard all-wheel drive and reliability. If budget is a primary concern, consider a well-maintained older model from a more reliable brand instead of the 2008 Jeep Compass.

Final Verdict: Is the 2008 Jeep Compass a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

bought the compass limited new in 2008.bought the compass limited new in 2008. love the fact it has a lifetime warranty on the engine & transmission (the only year jeep had it). did have front end problems when new, gave the dealer 2 chances to find & fix the loud cracking noise it made. they kept insisting there was no problem, but replaced right front axle. that didn't solve the problem so i did my own research & found that certain chrysler, dodge & jeeps had undersized control arm bolts. dealer fixed problem after i showed them the technical service bulletin advising dealers to replace the bolts. did have a problem in 2020 with the computer not recognizing the key, so car would not start. very vexing, as it took the dealer 3 attempts to fix the problem, which turned out to be a connector. had to have the alternator replaced in 2021. asked mechanic what genius thought it was a good idea to place the alternator under the engine, making it necessary to evacuate a/c & remove a/c lines to replace alternator. had new serpentine belt installed at the same time. 2023 had to have the oil pan gasket replaced. aha! lifetime warranty came into play---no charge. gas mileage is great, approx 20 mpg city/28 highway. car is peppy, seating very comfortable in front with driver side lumbar support & heated seats, if you are short, back seat is good, somewhat tight for taller person. cargo area is adequate. one drawback is the fact that it's a bit noisy if you only have 1 window open, you have to counter it by opening the opposite window. window guards helped with that. great sound system. good looking exterior. the "silver bullet" as i call it still looks good after 16 yrs.

Shut this dealer down already!!!!!Car died 2 days after purchase. This dealer sells lemons. Avoid, avoid, avoid. I purchased a vehicle that died after only 2 days. He doesn't even offer warranties because the vehicles are not functionabale.

No RegretsI bought my 2008 Jeep Compass brand new in 2008. Drove her cross country to New York and back. Had to do some front end work, replace the alternator and tires twice. I am now in need of struts and shocks and a new battery which has never been changed, just basic maintenance. I love my Jeep and if I'm ever in the market for a new rig.....It will be another Jeep Compass.

Do you want a money pit? This is a money pit.The car is made in xxxx. I got the car last year. Like literally a year ago. ive poured over $3k into it on repairs already. Tie rod, some belt, transmission control module, alignment, and of course oil changes and normal maintence. today After being in the shop twice since December of 2018, I had to get it towed to firestone and have been quoted $1,400. Sure it looks nice on the outside but apparently so did ted bundy. It does not matter if you maintain this vehicle properly it will suck you dry of money and then hold out its hand again and demand more. DO NOT BUT THIS CAR. Don't even let me start to tell you about the death wobble (look it up). Once again with only a year of having this car(barely a year) it costs me now about 5k... do you want to go insane? because this is how you go insane. I did my due dillagence though. I warned you..

This car is meeting my needs coz I bought a used. This car is currently meeting my needs . I bought a 2008 used one but currently has so many mechanical problems and am not happy with it. Am spending a lot of money on repairs and I regret my choice . But the car looks good on the outside and has a good interior design with a cool ambiance to it. Maybe should have purchased the newer models but this one is draining my wallet in repairs.

Love this carThe Jeep Compass has been a reliable vehicle for us. We have kept up on the oil changes and maintenance with few problems. A couple downsides are the 1 charging outlet and no cruise control. We plan to buy another Jeep in the next year or so and will get the all power everything model.

Great Starter JeepI loved my Compass. Got her used with 35k miles and she served me well until the 100k mark; CVT failure. 10/10 would recommend.
