The Good
The 2002 Jeep Wrangler excels in off-road performance thanks to its capable 4x4 system and rugged design, appealing to the adventurous spirit. Its simple, durable construction contributes to decent reliability. While comfort is basic, the iconic design and open-air driving experience offer an emotional connection. It also presents a good value proposition for those seeking affordable off-road capability.
The Bad
The 2002 Jeep Wrangler's weaknesses include limited on-road comfort and refinement. Fuel economy is poor compared to modern vehicles. Rust, particularly in the frame and undercarriage, is a common issue. The soft top can be noisy and prone to leaks. Check for worn suspension components and transfer case issues during inspection.

What Problems Does the 2002 Jeep Wrangler Have?
Recalls for the 2002 Wrangler TJ primarily revolved around safety concerns. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) database for specific recalls related to your VIN. These recalls often address issues like potential airbag deployment problems or faulty brake components. Some model years of the TJ are known for "death wobble," a violent front-end oscillation at highway speeds caused by worn steering or suspension components. While not a recall item, it's a common issue to be aware of. Long-term reliability concerns mostly center on the age of the vehicle and the wear and tear on components like ball joints, tie rod ends, and u-joints. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigating these issues.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Optional features varied depending on the trim level. Higher trims like the Sahara offered features such as air conditioning, cruise control, and upgraded audio systems. The Wrangler lacked modern tech like navigation systems, rearview cameras, or advanced safety features.
Crash test ratings for the 2002 Jeep Wrangler TJ were not particularly impressive. The NHTSA gave it a 3-star rating for driver-side frontal impact and a 4-star rating for passenger-side frontal impact. Side-impact crash tests were not conducted. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) also conducted frontal offset crash tests, assigning a "Marginal" rating. It's important to note that the Wrangler's design prioritizes off-road capability and open-air experience over crash safety. This is a significant factor to consider for buyers prioritizing safety.

How Does the 2002 Jeep Wrangler Compare to Other Wagon Open?
In terms of reliability, the Toyota 4Runner is generally considered more reliable. For features and on-road comfort, the Nissan Xterra is a better choice. If off-road prowess and the open-top experience are paramount, and you're willing to compromise on comfort and fuel economy, the Wrangler remains a compelling choice. A similar alternative focusing on off-road capability might be an older Land Rover Discovery, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. Overall, each choice depends on the buyer's priorities.

Been a jeep guy for 35years.Been a jeep guy for 35years. 2 Cherokees always wanted a wrangler bought a 02 sahara in good condition 193000. It's a 4.0 5spd enough said. No leaks body in great shape, paid 8200.00. After rebuilding the frame that broke due to knuckle head engineers who put drain holes on the side of the frame instead of on the bottom the frame rusted out. 5000 both sides & front anyway after all that I upgraded almost everything on my beloved jeep , new power strip bosch platinum plugs kn filters bilstein 5100 shocks magnaflow exhaust system revolver style rims good year wrangler tires front grill protector tail light guards plus a power chip so from my point of view I have a classic tj better than new these classic TJ s are fun to drive my jeep goes topless 6 mos a year. My advice is to inspect the frame!!!. I didn't know to look, but it all worked out I wouldn't trade my jeep for a Lamborghini, there's only one, to top it off I added a US Navy Anchor âš“ tire cover to show my pride of my service to my country as both of my sons have and are serving I'll keep this jeep until it's over the engine will outlast me!!! Jeep should've kept the 4.0 5spd the 3.6 is a great engine too

I bought my 2002 Jeep Wrangler X 4 liter soft top new inI bought my 2002 Jeep Wrangler X 4 liter soft top new in 2002. I absolutely love it!!! I'm 6'2" so the leg room leaves a bit to be desired, but other than that it's definitely 5 stars!! The people that wrote this review obviously don't understand the Jeep Wrangler and should probably stick to reviewing Toyotas.

Jeepsie (SE) and I have been together more than 20 yearsJeepsie (SE) and I have been together more than 20 years and we're both showing our age. But Jeepsie still turns on a dime, goes anywhere, does everything, passes everyone (except a gas station) is a hoot to drive and strangers still stop me on the street asking to buy her. Not going to happen. I'm keeping this car until I die!

There's ONLY one…I've owned and driven this 2002 wrangler Sahara for 22+ years now. Had the center of frame (under seats/transmission) welded/replaced. Had rear frame welded/replaced. Just now had front frame welded/replaced before it actually breaks. Currently 305k+ miles on original engine and trans. I will NEVER get rid of my Tank! I love this old girl, since day ONE. And she ain't leaving me…

Positive ReviewHave driven my 2002 Jeep Wrangler for 9 years. Love it! Only reason I'm considering changing vehicles is that my dog cannot get into the back any longer and I have a hard time with the emergency brake. I'm 70 years old and not so strong as I was... Before this I drove an older Jeep and loved it too! I paid $7000 for it and might get that IF I sell it.

Death wobble can be fixedI have had my Wrangler since 2002. I wanted to respond to the post from February 2020 about the death wobble. I had the DW about 5 years ago. Had a 4x4 company change out the track bar twice (they keep installing a mfg bar) and still had the wobble. Another friend that owns a shop and also works on 4x4, told me I needed to upgrade because I added a 2.5 lift and 33" inch tires and needed to upgrade the trackbar so I added a Warner trackbar and never had a problem since.

the frame rusted out from front to back and broke.not safe at all, it also has a death wobble ,this is where it starts shaking so bad you have to pull off road, the frame rusted out and broke ,the leaf spring fell out in front because of rust.
