The 2012 GMC Yukon is a full-size SUV known for its spacious interior and towing capability. It's part of the second Yukon generation (2007-2014). Available in SUV body style, key trims include SLE, SLT, and Denali. New, it ranged from approximately $42,000 to $55,000. The Yukon's popularity stems from its blend of truck-like utility with passenger comfort and available luxury features, appealing to families and those needing to haul cargo or tow trailers.
The Good

The 2012 GMC Yukon offers robust performance with its V8 engines, appealing to practical buyers needing towing capacity. Its comfortable ride and spacious interior provide a pleasant experience for families. While fuel efficiency isn't a strong point, the Yukon's value lies in its combination of capability and comfort, making it desirable for those seeking a reliable and powerful SUV. Its traditional SUV design also resonates with buyers valuing a classic aesthetic.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2012 GMC Yukon include lower fuel economy compared to smaller SUVs. The Active Fuel Management system (cylinder deactivation) can sometimes cause issues. Premature transmission failure and oil consumption have been reported. Rust can be a concern in northern climates. Ensure the vehicle has a well-documented maintenance history before purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2012 GMC Yukon Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2012 GMC Yukon often revolve around the Active Fuel Management (AFM) system, leading to excessive oil consumption. This can result in fouled spark plugs and potential engine damage. Transmission issues, including rough shifting and premature failure, have also been reported, particularly in higher-mileage vehicles. Some owners have noted problems with the air conditioning system, specifically the compressor.
Recalls for the 2012 Yukon have addressed issues such as potential fuel pump failure and incorrect air bag calibration data. Long-term reliability concerns center on the durability of the AFM system and transmission. Rust, particularly in areas with road salt, can be a significant problem over time. It's crucial to check for oil leaks and unusual engine noises when inspecting a used 2012 Yukon. Prior model years (2007-2011) had similar AFM-related issues, so preventative maintenance is key. Regular oil changes and monitoring oil levels are highly recommended to mitigate potential problems.

How long will the 2012 GMC Yukon last?

With proper maintenance, a 2012 GMC Yukon can reasonably be expected to reach 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report exceeding this mileage with regular servicing. However, longevity heavily depends on maintenance habits. Neglecting oil changes or postponing repairs can significantly shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability weaknesses often stem from the Active Fuel Management system and transmission. Rust can also compromise structural integrity over time, particularly in regions with harsh winters. A well-maintained Yukon can provide reliable service for 15+ years, while a neglected one may face significant issues sooner.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2012 GMC Yukon features a range of built-in tech and safety features. Standard entertainment includes a CD player, satellite radio, and auxiliary audio input. Higher trims offer a Bose sound system and a rear-seat entertainment system with a DVD player. Available tech includes a navigation system and Bluetooth connectivity.
Driver-assistance features are relatively limited compared to modern vehicles, but include available rear parking sensors and a rearview camera.
Safety features include antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a suite of airbags (front, side, and curtain). Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave the 2012 GMC Yukon a 4-star overall safety rating. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings vary; it's important to consult their specific reports for detailed crash test results. The Yukon's robust construction contributes to its crashworthiness, but its size can also make it less maneuverable in emergency situations.

2012 GMC Yukon Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2012 GMC Yukon ranged from approximately $42,000 to $55,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $12,000 to $22,000, but can fluctuate based on mileage, condition, and location. The Yukon has experienced significant depreciation due to its age and fuel consumption. Resale value is affected by factors such as mileage, condition, maintenance history, and trim level. Denali models tend to hold their value better than SLE or SLT trims. Demand for large SUVs also plays a role in its resale value.

2012 GMC Yukon Cost of Ownership

The 2012 GMC Yukon is generally considered costly to own. Insurance premiums are moderate to high, reflecting its size and potential repair costs. Fuel costs are substantial due to its relatively low fuel economy. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, particularly as the vehicle ages, with potential issues related to the AFM system and transmission. Long-term ownership costs can be minimized with proactive maintenance, but overall, it's not an economical vehicle compared to smaller SUVs or cars. Budget accordingly for potential repairs.

2012 GMC Yukon Insurance

Insurance for a 2012 GMC Yukon is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2012 GMC Yukon Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 GMC Yukon competes with full-size SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Toyota Sequoia. In terms of performance, the Yukon's V8 engines are comparable to its rivals, offering ample power for towing and hauling. Feature-wise, the Yukon offers a similar level of equipment, though some competitors may offer more advanced technology in higher trims.
Reliability is where the Yukon can fall slightly behind. The Toyota Sequoia is generally considered more reliable. The Ford Expedition offers a similar towing capacity and often comes at a slightly lower price point in the used market. The Chevrolet Tahoe is mechanically very similar to the Yukon, making it a comparable alternative, often at a slightly lower price due to the brand.
Alternatives to consider include the Toyota Sequoia for its reliability, or a newer Ford Expedition if your budget allows for it, offering updated technology and potentially better fuel economy. If budget is a primary concern, the Chevrolet Tahoe offers a similar experience to the Yukon for potentially less money. Consider prioritizing a thorough inspection and maintenance history review when evaluating any of these vehicles.

Final Verdict: Is the 2012 GMC Yukon a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2012 GMC Yukon is ideal for buyers needing a large SUV with substantial towing capacity and ample passenger space. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example at a reasonable price. Prioritize vehicles with documented service history, especially regarding oil changes and transmission maintenance. The SLT trim offers a good balance of features and value. The Denali provides more luxury but comes at a higher price. Carefully inspect for rust and potential AFM-related issues. If reliability and fuel economy are top priorities, consider the Toyota Sequoia as an alternative. Overall, the 2012 Yukon offers a capable and comfortable SUV experience for the right buyer under the right circumstances.

2nd best GMC product I have ever owned.

Except for the lack of corporate support really it's a great car - cracked dash - not my fault. No GM support. I contacted dealer, local customer service, regional customer service and national customer service. They all turned me away like a smelly old tennis shoe. I will never buy another GM product - you can bet the house on that.

Will last a long time

I have 126000 miles on my 2012 and have followed the maintenance recommendations as GMC requires and it is still motoring a long---except for a couple of items--stabilink/traction control sensor and the heating element in one of the captain seats going out--it has had no problems. Like the interior, comfortable ride, security the truck brings and seeing over traffic--the kid loves the entertainment system for watching movies when on family trips.

Never had to put any money in this car

The car I owned better than this Yukon Denali was the Cadillac Escalade . Very similar cars but the Yukon was pretty luxurious for about $10,000 less money.
