The Good
The 2012 Mazda CX-7 offers sporty performance and responsive handling, appealing to drivers seeking a fun experience. Its stylish design is emotionally appealing. Practically, it provides a comfortable ride and decent cargo space. While fuel economy isn't its strongest suit, it presents good value for its class, especially on the used market.
The Bad
The 2012 Mazda CX-7's weaknesses include below-average fuel economy, especially with the turbocharged engine. Potential buyers should watch out for turbocharger issues, oil leaks, and problems with the variable valve timing. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and interior trim quality. Rust can also be a concern in colder climates.

Analysis
What Problems Does the 2012 Mazda CX-7 Have?
Some owners have reported problems with the automatic transmission, including rough shifting and slipping. The infotainment system, particularly the navigation unit if equipped, can be slow and outdated. Interior trim quality and durability have also been criticized. Rust can be a problem, especially in areas with road salt.
While specific recall information should be verified with NHTSA, common recalls for the CX-7 models often involved issues with fuel leaks or corrosion that could affect braking performance. Long-term reliability concerns focus primarily on the turbocharged engine and its associated components, potentially leading to higher maintenance costs as the vehicle accumulates mileage.
How long will the 2012 Mazda CX-7 last?
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
In terms of safety, the CX-7 came standard with anti-lock brakes (ABS), stability control, traction control, and multiple airbags (front, side, and curtain). Driver-assistance features were limited compared to modern vehicles, with no advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like lane departure warning or automatic emergency braking available.
Crash test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be consulted for specific details, but generally, the CX-7 performed well in crash tests, earning good ratings for occupant protection. It's important to review the actual ratings from these organizations for the 2012 model year. The optional features enhanced the overall experience, but the lack of modern ADAS features makes it less competitive compared to newer vehicles in terms of safety technology.

How Does the 2012 Mazda CX-7 Compare to Other Wagon?
Regarding price, the CX-7 was competitively priced when new, and used models can be a good value if purchased at the right price. However, considering long-term reliability and fuel economy, the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are generally better choices for practical buyers. If sporty handling is a priority, the Mazda CX-5 (a newer model) provides a similar driving experience with improved fuel efficiency and reliability. The Ford Escape is a similar alternative, but reliability ratings can vary. Ultimately, the CR-V and RAV4 are safer bets overall.

Reliable and fun to driveBought the basic SV model used in 2015 with 40k miles, have 71k now. It’s my wife’s car and she loves it. Great looking in pearl white with tan/black interior. Very solid, including interior which isn’t cheap feeling like some current cars. Interior styling looks upscale and exterior is sporty. Very comfortable seats with durable cloth. Engine is plenty peppy unless you have a heavy foot. Fuel economy is a bit better than EPA rating on the highway, close to EPA in the city. Best as a city/suburban car as the ride is a bit bouncy on bad highways, which we have a lot of in MN. Great handling for an SUV. Best attribute is its reliability—no problems to date, just the usual wear items like drive belt and battery. And no rust after 9 MN winters, much better than some Mazdas. Wouldn’t mind having Bluetooth, but can’t beat it for value.

Beach DayzFits me & my 3 six foot sons very comfortably. And of course my beach chair fit length wise or sideways. Enjoying my sunroof & Bluetooth capabilities.

Awesome ExperienceMy parents sold me this car after my first car, a cheap clunker, finally died on me. It was super reliable and gave me almost no trouble at all. The driver's window did have a mechanical component start to give out after only 3 or so years (my parents got the car new, I acquired it in 2015), but otherwise I was always very comfortable and happy with the car.

One of the Best cars I?ve ever owned! Love it!Car has everything I wanted as far as extras, sunroof, backup camera, great stereo. Runs very smooth and quiet. Plenty of leg room and comfortable. Great on gas mileage.

Decent carIt's an alright car, the ac unit isn't the best and the gas mileage isn't the best either. But the size of the car is great and has a lot of spacious room for comfort in the car. The exterior also looks beautiful and looks high class. Although I would not recommend this car it is an alright family car

My 3rd MazdaI've been driving a sports car for the past 20 years and needed a good vehicle. This fits the bill. It drives like a car and not a truck, and I'm actually enjoying it.

Overall great valueThis is a great SUV. Pros: It is very comfortable and convenient. It can be purchased at a very good price It has eye pleasing interior and exterior design Great for everyday use Gas usage is above average too Cons: it doesn't hold its ground very well especially when speeding. Make sure to take the curves at a slow pace.
