The Volvo XC60, a compact luxury SUV, has been a popular choice since its initial introduction in 2008. The 2023 model year continues this legacy. Key trims include Core, Plus, and Ultimate. The XC60 is known for its Scandinavian design, focus on safety, and comfortable interior. Pricing generally ranges from $45,000 to $60,000 depending on trim and options. It stands out for its elegant styling and serene driving experience.
The Good

The 2023 Volvo XC60 offers a comfortable and refined driving experience. It boasts elegant Scandinavian design, appealing to emotional buyers. Practically, it offers good fuel efficiency for its class, advanced safety features, and a reputation for relative reliability (though not class-leading). Performance is adequate for daily driving. The comfortable interior also increases its appeal.

The Bad

Some common complaints about the 2023 Volvo XC60 involve the infotainment system's complexity and occasional lag. The rear seat legroom is adequate but not exceptional compared to some rivals. Some owners have reported minor electrical glitches. While generally reliable, Volvo's reliability ratings aren't always as high as Lexus or Acura. Watch out for software updates addressing infotainment issues.

What Problems Does the 2023 Volvo XC60 Have?

While the 2023 Volvo XC60 is generally considered a reliable vehicle, some frequently reported problems include issues with the infotainment system. Users have reported slow response times, occasional glitches, and difficulties connecting to Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Some owners have also mentioned minor electrical issues, such as sensor malfunctions or problems with the climate control system.

Recalls are always a possibility for any vehicle, and it's crucial to check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for the latest recall information specific to the 2023 Volvo XC60. These recalls may address safety-related defects that could affect the vehicle's performance or safety.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's technology. As vehicles become more technologically advanced, there is a greater potential for electronic component failures over time. Regular maintenance and adherence to the recommended service schedule can help mitigate some of these risks.

Historically, some older Volvo models have experienced issues with their electronic control modules and turbocharger systems. While these issues are not necessarily prevalent in the 2023 XC60, it's still wise to be aware of potential long-term concerns. It's advisable to review owner forums and reliability reports to gain insights into any emerging trends or common problems reported by other XC60 owners. Always keep up to date with scheduled maintenance and address any unusual noises or issues promptly.

How long will the 2023 Volvo XC60 last?

With regular maintenance, the 2023 Volvo XC60 can reasonably be expected to last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years. Adhering to Volvo's recommended service schedule, including oil changes, fluid flushes, and inspections, is crucial. Long-term durability can be affected by climate and driving conditions. Salt exposure in colder climates can accelerate corrosion. Potential weaknesses over time may include wear and tear on suspension components, infotainment system glitches, and potential issues with the mild-hybrid system's battery. Proper care and timely repairs can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 boasts a comprehensive suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. The centerpiece is a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system powered by Google Android Automotive OS, offering Google Maps, Google Assistant, and access to various apps via the Google Play Store. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Standard driver-assistance features include lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking, and a rearview camera. Optional features include adaptive cruise control with Pilot Assist (Volvo's semi-autonomous driving system), a 360-degree surround-view camera, and a head-up display.

Safety is a Volvo hallmark. The XC60 includes numerous airbags, whiplash protection, and a robust safety cage. As of my knowledge cutoff, the 2023 Volvo XC60 has received excellent crash-test ratings from both the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), earning top scores in various categories, including a Top Safety Pick+ award from the IIHS.

Optional features such as a Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system provide enhanced entertainment. Some models also include features like heated rear seats, a heated steering wheel, and a massaging front seats for added comfort. Volvo’s commitment to safety is evident in the XC60’s design and the comprehensive array of standard and available safety technologies.

2023 Volvo XC60 Prices and Market Value

The 2023 Volvo XC60 had a starting MSRP of around $45,000 when new, with higher trims reaching upwards of $60,000. Current used market prices vary based on condition, mileage, and trim, typically ranging from $35,000 to $50,000. The XC60 depreciates at a moderate rate, holding its value relatively well compared to some other luxury SUVs. Factors affecting resale value include vehicle condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options like the advanced safety features or premium sound system. Lower mileage and a clean Carfax report command higher prices.

2023 Volvo XC60 Cost of Ownership

The 2023 Volvo XC60's ownership costs are moderate for a luxury SUV. Insurance premiums are typically average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the B5 model. Maintenance, while not cheap, is predictable with scheduled service. Repair costs can be higher due to the use of specialized parts and labor. Long-term, the XC60 isn't the most economical choice, but it offers a good balance between luxury, safety, and running costs. Consider extended warranties for added peace of mind regarding potential repairs.

2023 Volvo XC60 Insurance

Insurance for a 2023 Volvo XC60 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 Volvo XC60 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 competes with the Acura RDX, Audi Q5, BMW X3, and Lexus NX. In terms of performance, the BMW X3 offers a sportier driving experience, while the XC60 prioritizes comfort. Feature-wise, the XC60 is well-equipped, especially with its standard safety features. Reliability is a mixed bag; Lexus NX generally scores higher, while the XC60 is considered relatively reliable but not class-leading. Price-wise, the XC60 is competitive, often undercutting BMW and Audi.

The Acura RDX offers a similar blend of features and practicality at a slightly lower price point, potentially making it a better value. The Lexus NX stands out with its excellent reliability record. The BMW X3 is ideal for those prioritizing performance and handling. The Audi Q5 offers a refined interior and a sophisticated driving experience.

If reliability is a top concern, the Lexus NX is a strong alternative. If performance is paramount, consider the BMW X3. For a balanced approach with a focus on value, the Acura RDX is worth considering. The Volvo XC60 holds its own with its unique Scandinavian design and focus on safety. However, each alternative offers distinct advantages.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 Volvo XC60 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish and comfortable luxury SUV with a strong emphasis on safety. It's worth buying if you appreciate Scandinavian design, prioritize comfort over outright performance, and value a comprehensive suite of safety features. Consider a used model for potential cost savings, but ensure it has a clean service history and a thorough inspection. The Plus trim offers a good balance of features and value. If budget is a significant concern, a new Core trim offers essential features. However, be aware of potential infotainment quirks and ensure you're comfortable with the system before purchasing.

Glitch that needs attention

Love this suv however when driving just a half hour the dash screen went black with a message “infotainment system cooling” restarted the car but no change. This had to be a recall but can’t find any info. Poor quality in an expensive car. Service department at dealer won’t answer their phone. Hoping they will call back

Loving my new XC60

I'm a 18 year loyal Toyota SUV guy and I switched to a new XC60. Lovering Volvo in Nashua were great. Sales Mgr Dan was fantastic. No pressure. This is the nicest & most comfortable car I've owned. Fun to drive & easy on gas. Too new to comment on reliability but its safety systems are impressive. Sound system is next level too. I would highly recommend.

Decent SUV

Very unusual SUV for a luxury model. Interior and exterior are well designed and made. There are numerous perks, such as having Google verbally operate many SUV functions. It’s a hybrid with a small battery that collects energy to provide minimal better gas mileage. Moving the steering wheel is manual. Very disturbing for a luxury vehicle. There is no interior mood lighting for night operating. Seat comfort and overall room is more than adequate. It has center steering which I love. Its heads-up display has minimal display options other than speed and directions. Overall, a nice SUV. Just takes some getting used to.

Great SUV

Worth the money for all stated reasons - the most important not mentioned is safety. This was my 4th Volvo lease. 5 months ago involved in a major auto accident - the safety features of the vehicle saved my life. Would never consider a different vehicle as long as model fits budget.

My XC 60

Could not be happier with a car purchase. The XC 60 exceeds my expectations. Handles like a sports car, manages to be luxurious, but doesn’t feel cramped at all. All of the bells and whistles are fantastic. Shout out to Cullen Griffin at Capital Eurocars for excellent service and help!
