The 2017 Porsche Panamera is a second-generation (971) luxury sedan, offering a blend of sports car performance and executive sedan comfort. It's available as a four-door sedan. Key trims include the Panamera, 4, 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S E-Hybrid. The 2017 Panamera stands out due to its exhilarating driving dynamics, luxurious interior, and distinctive Porsche styling. New pricing started around $85,000 and extended well into the $190,000 range, depending on trim and options.
The Good

The 2017 Panamera boasts exceptional performance, a comfortable ride (especially with adaptive suspension), and a stunning design. For the emotional buyer, it offers Porsche prestige and exhilarating driving. Practical buyers appreciate its spacious interior, available all-wheel drive, and surprisingly decent fuel efficiency for its class. Predicted reliability scores are above average for the segment.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include the high cost of maintenance and repairs, particularly for complex systems. Some owners have reported issues with electronics and the infotainment system. The rear visibility can be limited. Option packages can significantly increase the price, so be mindful of the final cost when purchasing.

What Problems Does the 2017 Porsche Panamera Have?

The 2017 Porsche Panamera, while generally reliable, has experienced some frequently reported problems. Some owners have reported issues with the PCM (Porsche Communication Management) system, including glitches, freezing, and navigation errors. Air suspension issues, though not extremely common, can be expensive to repair. Battery problems, especially in the E-Hybrid models, have also been noted.

Recalls for the 2017 Panamera have included issues with the seat belt retractors and potential fuel leaks. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's systems. As the car ages, the likelihood of expensive repairs increases, especially regarding the air suspension, hybrid components (if applicable), and the electronic systems. Regular maintenance and adherence to Porsche's recommended service schedule are crucial to mitigating potential problems. Independent Porsche specialists are often more cost-effective than dealerships for routine maintenance and repairs after the warranty expires.

How long will the 2017 Porsche Panamera last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 Porsche Panamera can realistically provide 150,000-200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, consistent adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule is crucial. Long-term durability hinges on addressing potential weaknesses such as air suspension components, electronic glitches, and oil leaks. The complex hybrid system of the E-Hybrid models can present additional maintenance considerations. Regular oil changes, fluid checks, and proactive repairs will significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will drastically shorten its usable life.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 Porsche Panamera comes with a substantial array of built-in tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.

Tech & Entertainment: The centerpiece is the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) system with a 12.3-inch touchscreen display. It integrates navigation, audio controls, smartphone connectivity (Apple CarPlay), and vehicle settings. Standard features include a high-quality sound system, Bluetooth, and USB ports. Optional features include a Burmester high-end surround sound system.

Driver-Assistance: Standard driver-assistance features include front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and automatic emergency braking. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and surround-view camera system. These features enhance safety and convenience during everyday driving.

Safety Features: Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes, stability control, and a full suite of airbags. Optional features include night vision assist.

Crash-Test Ratings: The 2017 Porsche Panamera received excellent crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and the NHTSA, demonstrating its commitment to occupant safety. Scores may vary depending on the specific testing criteria and the availability of optional safety equipment. Check the IIHS and NHTSA websites for the latest ratings.

2017 Porsche Panamera Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2017 Porsche Panamera ranged from approximately $85,000 for the base model to over $190,000 for a fully equipped Turbo S E-Hybrid. Currently, used market prices range from roughly $35,000 to $80,000, depending on mileage, condition, trim, and options. The Panamera experiences significant depreciation, especially in the first few years. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, maintenance history, mileage, original MSRP, and the desirability of specific options and colors. Models with lower mileage and comprehensive service records command higher prices.

2017 Porsche Panamera Cost of Ownership

The 2017 Porsche Panamera is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its performance and value. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the Turbo models. Maintenance and repair costs are also high, particularly for specialized parts and labor. While not economical, the Panamera offers a unique driving experience. Budget accordingly for significant upkeep and potential repairs, especially as the car ages. Consider extended warranties to mitigate potential repair costs.

2017 Porsche Panamera Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 Porsche Panamera is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Hatchback with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 Porsche Panamera Compare to Other Hatchback?

The 2017 Porsche Panamera competes with luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8. In terms of performance, the Panamera often outshines its rivals, offering a more engaging and sporty driving experience. Features are comparable, with each offering a wide array of luxury and technology options. Reliability is generally good for the Panamera, but some rivals, like the Lexus LS, have a stronger track record. Price-wise, the Panamera can be more expensive than some competitors, especially when equipped with options.

Alternatives to consider include:
  • Mercedes-Benz S-Class: Offers superior luxury and ride comfort, but less sporty handling.
  • BMW 7 Series: Provides a balance of performance and luxury, with a slightly less sporty feel than the Panamera.
  • Audi A8: A technologically advanced option with a comfortable ride, but lacks the Panamera's driving engagement.
  • Lexus LS: Known for exceptional reliability and a smooth ride, but less sporty and engaging.
The best alternative depends on individual priorities. If performance is paramount, the Panamera is a top choice. For ultimate luxury and comfort, the S-Class is a strong contender. If reliability is a key concern, the Lexus LS is worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 2017 Porsche Panamera a Good Hatchback?

The 2017 Porsche Panamera is ideal for buyers who desire a blend of sports car performance and luxury sedan comfort. It's worth buying if you appreciate Porsche's driving dynamics and are willing to accept higher ownership costs. A used Panamera can offer significant value, but a pre-purchase inspection is crucial. Consider the 4S for a good balance of performance and features, or the Turbo for exhilarating power. Thorough maintenance records are a must. Avoid neglected examples, as repairs can be expensive. New models offer the latest technology and warranty coverage, but at a premium.

Loaded 2017 Panamera Turbo: 550 hp & 567 lb/ft tor

The 2017 Panamera Turbo is phenomenal: It is the perfect blend of sports car (0-60 in 3.0 seconds… Entering traffic or accelerating to pass is exhilarating at 550 hp/567 lb/ft torque) & luxury vehicle (4 door, plenty of room for back seat passengers, plus plenty of storage room with hatch back & rear seats can fold down for more space. Beautiful interior, appointments & super sound system). This vehicle is very impressive, drives/corners like a dream (these tires just Grip the road on turns) and people commented on it regularly. This is a beast of a sports car that also happens to carry four people comfortably!

So far, so good

After one week I can say this is by far my favorite car purchase. I'm using it as my daily driver. I am coming out of a SUV and thought the switch would be difficult but this car has so much room and tons of cargo space. It drives like a dream and so far seems to be a great purchase.

Excellent execution

I have been driving the car for about two weeks now. Remain enamored with the beauty and truly marvel at the technology. I?m fairly technologically savvy but continue to learn something new about the car every day. The car is a joy the drive around town or down the expressway. Very comfortable for myself at 6?2 and my 6?1? son in the rear seat . The amenities make any drive a joy and the driving experience matches that which you would expect of a Porsche. Very pleased with the investment.

BEST CAR EVER OWNED

It handles very precise. Very smooth -very nimble. Blindingly quick. The top end is up there somewhere that wise men would never go but moving onto the motorway it's acceleration and perfect handling is awesome for getting around a blockade of lane hogging pachyderms.
