The BMW X1 is a subcompact luxury SUV, part of BMW's X series. The 2023 model marks the beginning of the third generation (U11). The key trim is the xDrive28i, offered with all-wheel drive. Pricing typically starts around $40,000 and can increase with options. The X1 stands out with its blend of practicality, sporty handling, updated technology, and premium interior, making it a popular choice for urban drivers and small families. It provides a luxurious experience in a compact package.
The Good

The 2023 BMW X1 offers a compelling mix. Its turbocharged engine provides responsive performance, appealing to driving enthusiasts. Practical buyers will appreciate the improved fuel efficiency and ample cargo space. The luxurious interior and refined design enhance comfort and style. While early reliability data is emerging, BMW's reputation adds value. It strikes a balance between aspiration and practicality.

The Bad

As a newly redesigned model, the 2023 BMW X1's long-term reliability is still being established. Some reviewers have noted that certain features are now subscription-based. The rear seats may feel slightly cramped for taller adults. Keep an eye on potential software glitches related to the updated infotainment system, a common issue in new vehicle launches. Premium fuel is recommended, adding to the running costs.

What Problems Does the 2023 BMW X1 Have?

As a relatively new model year, the 2023 BMW X1 doesn't have a long track record of frequently reported problems. However, early adopters and reviewers have pointed out some potential areas of concern. One common issue is related to the iDrive 8 infotainment system, which can experience occasional software glitches or lag. These issues are often addressed through software updates.

Recalls for the 2023 model are still emerging. It's crucial to check the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website for the latest recall information.

Long-term reliability concerns are centered around the new engine design and the complexity of the infotainment system. BMW's turbocharged engines have sometimes faced issues with oil leaks or premature wear in the past, so monitoring these components is essential. The advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) rely heavily on sensors and software, making them potential sources of problems over time.

Because the 2023 model is a full redesign, it shares little with previous generations. Therefore, historical reliability data from older X1 models may not be directly applicable. Monitor online forums and owner reviews for emerging trends and potential issues as more owners accumulate mileage.

How long will the 2023 BMW X1 last?

Based on typical BMW ownership and maintenance, the 2023 X1 can reasonably be expected to provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-12 years of service with proper care. Regular oil changes, timely maintenance of the cooling system, and transmission services are crucial for longevity. Given its sophisticated electronics, battery health will also be important. Potential weaknesses over time might include wear and tear on suspension components, potential issues with the turbocharger, and the degradation of interior materials. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more significant and costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2023 BMW X1 boasts a cutting-edge suite of technology, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features.

Tech & Entertainment: The centerpiece is the BMW Curved Display, integrating a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch central information display. It runs on BMW's iDrive 8 operating system, offering customizable widgets and improved voice control. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. Available upgrades include a Harman Kardon premium sound system.

Driver-Assistance: Standard features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, active blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Optional features include adaptive cruise control with stop & go, parking assistant plus, and a head-up display. These features enhance safety and convenience, particularly in urban environments.

Safety: Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, stability control, and anti-lock brakes. As of now, complete crash-test ratings from the NHTSA and IIHS might still be pending. Check their official websites for the most up-to-date information.

The X1’s impressive tech suite contributes to a modern and engaging driving experience, making it competitive within its segment. However, familiarize yourself with the iDrive 8 system to avoid frustration with its complexity.

2023 BMW X1 Prices and Market Value

The 2023 BMW X1 had a starting MSRP of around $40,000, with prices increasing depending on options and packages. Used market prices are still relatively close to the original MSRP due to limited availability and continued demand for newer vehicles. Depreciation is expected to be moderate for the X1, typical for a luxury SUV. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition, service history, and the popularity of specific colors and option packages. Maintaining the vehicle well and keeping it in good cosmetic condition will help retain its value.

2023 BMW X1 Cost of Ownership

Owning a 2023 BMW X1 involves higher than average costs. Insurance premiums are typically more expensive for luxury vehicles. While fuel economy is decent, premium fuel is recommended. Maintenance, including scheduled services and potential repairs, can be costly due to specialized parts and labor. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for these expenses. Though fuel-efficient, the X1 is not the most economical choice, placing it in the mid-range for total cost of ownership compared to non-luxury alternatives.

2023 BMW X1 Insurance

Insurance for a 2023 BMW X1 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2023 BMW X1 Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 BMW X1 competes with the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, Volvo XC40, and Lexus UX. In terms of performance, the X1 offers a good balance of power and handling, comparable to the Q3 and GLA. Feature-wise, the X1’s iDrive 8 and standard driver-assistance tech are competitive, but the XC40 boasts a more minimalist Scandinavian design. Reliability is an area where the Lexus UX often scores higher, while the X1’s long-term reliability is still being established.

Price-wise, the X1 is generally in line with its German rivals. The Lexus UX is typically more affordable, but offers less power. The Volvo XC40 presents a compelling alternative with its stylish design and focus on safety. For buyers prioritizing performance and technology, the X1 is a strong contender. If reliability and value are paramount, the Lexus UX or Acura Integra (slightly different class but worth considering) might be better options. The Audi Q3 and Mercedes GLA are similar alternatives with their own strengths in design and features.

Final Verdict: Is the 2023 BMW X1 a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2023 BMW X1 is ideal for urban dwellers and small families seeking a stylish and practical luxury SUV. It's worth buying new to take advantage of the latest technology and warranty coverage, especially if you appreciate the BMW driving experience. Consider the xDrive28i trim for its standard all-wheel drive. If buying used, carefully inspect the vehicle's service history and check for any outstanding recalls. For those prioritizing long-term reliability above all else, other options in the segment might be more suitable. However, if you value performance, a premium interior, and modern tech, the 2023 X1 is a compelling choice.

Awful electronics and poor quality construction

We purposely invested in a BMW for its reputation for quality -- and we were sorely disappointed. The fancy display was trouble from the start; hard to navigate and operate, and cutting out the CarPlay connection at critical times. We reached our limit when the vehicle wouldn't start on a trip to Vermont; we had to have it jumped and wasted a day of our trip, losing hotel deposits and time. The repairs involved replacing parts in the system that were defective -- and would have cost $2,000 if not under warranty. This was not the experience we signed up for, so we sold the car after less than a year of use.

New 2023

Bought my 2023 X1, a drive about 3 weeks ago, and the 2018 I had WAS MUCH BETTER! Not impressed with the new one at all!! The engine auto shut off is horrible, u can only shut it off on the same trip - not permanently. The acceleration AFTER it comes on is hesitant, and there is WAAAY TOO MUCH GOING ON (bells and whistles) in the radio/dashboard area… Crazy crowded. I can’t find half the stuff I need, it’s a journey behind 3 screens just to reset the miles when I fill up… However, the ride is really good, great steering, tight feel, no rattles and the view around the car when driving is really good. Probably- most likely not buy another one.

Worst car I have ever bought from my 10 cars own

Car is not even beable to refueled that is my experience. Gas door flap failure from the manufacture. Not reliable, autoshutoff is annoying and car doesnt feel smooth when reignite the engine, always feel like bumpy on the road. Gas mileage is about 17-19 not 22-28 as advertise. I will have to closely monitor it to figure it out. Bad mileage, bad transition from autoshut off, bumpy ride. Overal 2 stars just because the interior has 2 stars

Excellent in many ways, death to the ConnectDrive

Just picked-up the X1 on Mar 28th and had a great ride home from the dealership. Handles very well on the road with ample torque when needed. Hate the start/stop mechanics and the fact that you must deactivate each time. Hate the ConnectDrive thing—beware this is a sinister ploy to get more of your dollars and convert once standard car features into subscription services. It is evil. Love the interior. This is my third BMW, so I think this X1 interior is quite good for the money and I am astounded by the standard features list—Wow! And there’s a spare tire with tools in the trunk, WHAT!? I use a touch screen all day, so the tech is no stretch, as long as it works. We shall see, the OS is new. Dual clutch….hmmm, it has its advantages, but smooth take off ain’t one of ‘em. The seats are superb and the cabin very clean. Love the cargo space. This is a good vehicle for a certain group of buyers who want cargo and fun. This is a smart ICE choice, and I hope there will eventually be a U.S. bound iX1.

Great ride…but ugh distracting dashboard-humongou

New bmw x1. Glides…effortless driving. Incredible performance. I’ve had three other x1’s prior…nothing comes close to the handling of the 2023. However…the huge screen is distracting, it’s not user friendly and by the time I figure out the new gadgets I’ll be ready for a new lease🤷🏻‍♀️
