The 2017 BMW X1 is a subcompact luxury SUV, introduced as part of the second generation (F48) that began in 2016. Available trims included the sDrive28i (front-wheel drive) and xDrive28i (all-wheel drive). Its popularity stems from its practical size, agile handling, and BMW's premium brand cachet. It offers a blend of SUV versatility and car-like driving dynamics. The original MSRP ranged from around $33,000 to $40,000 depending on options and drivetrain.
The Good

The 2017 BMW X1 boasts a punchy engine delivering engaging performance. It offers a comfortable ride and a well-designed interior. It appeals to practical buyers with its fuel efficiency and cargo space, while emotional buyers appreciate the BMW badge, sporty handling, and upscale feel.

The Bad

Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system and potential for oil leaks. The rear seat space can be tight for taller adults. The base model's ride can be firm. Maintenance costs can be higher compared to non-luxury brands. Prospective buyers should check for these issues during a pre-purchase inspection.

What Problems Does the 2017 BMW X1 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2017 BMW X1 include issues with the infotainment system, such as glitches, freezing, or slow response times. Some owners have also reported minor oil leaks, particularly as the vehicle ages. While not widespread, concerns about the long-term reliability of the turbocharger have been voiced.
Recalls for the 2017 BMW X1, though not numerous, should be checked on the NHTSA website using the VIN. Typical areas of concern might include potential issues with the fuel pump or other safety-related components.
Long-term reliability hinges on proper maintenance. Regular oil changes and adherence to the recommended service schedule are crucial. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into more significant and costly repairs. Potential buyers should obtain a vehicle history report and consider a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic to identify any existing or potential problems. Some owners have reported issues with the variable valve timing (VANOS) system on higher mileage vehicles, so this is another area to inspect.

How long will the 2017 BMW X1 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2017 BMW X1 can realistically achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. The engine and transmission are generally durable if serviced regularly. Long-term durability can be affected by neglect of maintenance, particularly oil changes and fluid flushes. Weaknesses over time may include wear and tear on suspension components, potential for increased oil leaks, and deterioration of interior materials. The infotainment system may also become outdated compared to newer vehicles.

So reliable and fun to drive, even in snow. I’m tall and seats are comfy, even in rear. Very versatile with good cargo space. Love the kick-to-open rear door. Mileage is around 28 mpg, it requires premium fuel. It drives a little sluggish when not in Sport mode.

Im glad BMW came out with x1, sometimes customers want to drive a nice looking car and settle for models that end up having major issues and the 100k “warranty” promised it’s just a selling features that never works Becuase every time you take your car “nothing it’s wrong” The BMW has been a great addition to the family; drives great and feels very solid. We love it!
Lisa
Gorgeous car inside and out. Never would have expected to purchase a certified pre-owned vehicle, but I would do it again. My parents actually thought it was brand new!
Negative Owner Reviews

Jury is still out. Wish it had blind spot indicator. Would like to be able to sit higher up. Rides nicely. Still having trouble with the menu control. Looks more like a hatchback than an SUV.
Dan
BMW discontinued their BMW Assist technology in only several year old model of my X1. With this they disabled my hands free bluetooth and AUX music input. BMW dealerships are not prepared to deal with technology and it will cost you a lot of money to do anything with them after your warranty expires. After warranty maintenance of BMW is a disaster. It is either very expensive or you cannot find a mechanic who can understand it. BMW has a lot of advanced technology in their cars but an average U.S. mechanic will have no idea how to treat it right and dealerships abuse their almost monopoly and overcharge you by a lot.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2017 BMW X1 comes standard with the BMW iDrive system featuring a 6.5-inch display, Bluetooth connectivity, a rearview camera, and basic audio controls. Optional tech includes a larger 8.8-inch display with navigation, Apple CarPlay compatibility (availability may vary), and BMW ConnectedDrive services for remote access and emergency assistance.
Standard driver-assistance features include Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), anti-lock brakes (ABS), and multiple airbags. Optional driver-assistance features, often bundled in packages, include parking sensors, a parking assistant, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
Entertainment features consist of a standard audio system with USB and auxiliary inputs. An optional Harman Kardon premium sound system is available for enhanced audio quality.
As for safety, the 2017 BMW X1 generally received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Check these agencies' official websites for specific ratings and reports.

2017 BMW X1 Prices and Market Value

The 2017 BMW X1 had a starting MSRP of around $33,000 to $40,000 when new, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $15,000 to $25,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and equipment. Depreciation is significant in the first few years, but slows down as the car ages. Factors affecting resale value include the vehicle's condition, maintenance history, mileage, and whether it's equipped with desirable options like the Premium or Technology packages. All-wheel-drive (xDrive) models generally hold their value slightly better.

2017 BMW X1 Cost of Ownership

The 2017 BMW X1 is generally more costly to own compared to non-luxury vehicles. Insurance premiums are higher due to the BMW brand and potential repair costs. Fuel costs are reasonable given the fuel economy, but premium gasoline is recommended. Maintenance and repair costs can be significant, especially for unscheduled repairs. Long-term ownership requires budgeting for potential issues with the turbocharger, electronics, and other BMW-specific components. Regular maintenance is crucial to mitigate these costs.

2017 BMW X1 Insurance

Insurance for a 2017 BMW X1 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2017 BMW X1 Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2017 BMW X1 competes with other subcompact luxury SUVs like the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Lexus NX. In terms of performance, the X1 offers a slightly more engaging driving experience than the GLA and Q3, but the NX prioritizes comfort. Feature-wise, the X1 is competitive, but the GLA may offer slightly more advanced technology options. Reliability is a mixed bag; the X1 is generally considered less reliable than the Lexus NX but comparable to the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA. Price-wise, the X1 is similarly priced to its German rivals.
Alternatives to consider:
  • Lexus NX: If reliability and comfort are top priorities.
  • Audi Q3: For a similar German luxury experience with a slightly different styling.
  • Mercedes-Benz GLA: If advanced technology and a more luxurious interior are desired.
  • Acura RDX: (Consider a slightly older model for price parity) Offers more space and value for the money, but isn't quite as sporty.

The 2017 BMW X1 is ideal for individuals or small families seeking a practical and sporty subcompact luxury SUV. It's worth buying used if you appreciate the BMW driving experience and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs. Look for well-maintained examples with complete service records. The xDrive28i (all-wheel drive) trim is recommended for those living in areas with inclement weather. A pre-purchase inspection is essential to avoid costly surprises. The Premium Package is desirable for added features and comfort. Consider alternatives if reliability is your top priority, or if budget is a concern.

Beautiful interior super comfortable

Just drove it on a seven hour trip mostly raining but the car handled great and was super comfortable. Big enough for a full grown man, but handles like a sports car.

Fun little SUV

I love the pep this car has. It’s a perfect size for me and is definitely going to get me my first speeding ticket. I really like how open the dash feels for a smaller SUV. I feel like I have much better visibility while driving it. It’s a perfect combination of fun and luxury, without being over the top. My only complaint is that is makes my husband’s car look so cheap next to it. Guess we’ll have to get another one!?!

The X1 BMW is perfect for me and fun to drive. It's as nice as the X3 inside and out, but easier for me to handle.

This BMW "is" overall a gem and worth the money.

This BMW X1 2017 has been a reliable, beautiful indeed however, the road noise (tires) is unbelievable. Speaking big picture ( overall ) I'll give this X1 / 2017 an 8 - on the 10 scale. Arguably, one of the best I've owned in 30 years. The road noise is definitely an issue.
