What Problems Does the 2020 Tesla Model S Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2020 Tesla Model S often revolve around build quality, including misaligned panels, paint imperfections, and issues with interior trim. The infotainment system, while advanced, can experience glitches, frozen screens, and connectivity problems. Suspension components, particularly air suspension, have been reported to require more frequent maintenance than in traditional vehicles. Battery degradation is a long-term concern for all electric vehicles, and the Model S is no exception; range may decrease over time. Recalls have been issued for various issues, including suspension components, seat belt issues, and touchscreen failures.

Specific to the 2020 model year, some owners have reported early wear on tires and premature brake wear, possibly due to regenerative braking habits and vehicle weight. Long-term reliability concerns include the lifespan of the battery pack and the cost of replacement, which can be significant. Also, the door handles, which are motorized, are known to sometimes fail, requiring repair. Software glitches affecting various systems, including Autopilot, are also documented concerns.

How long will the 2020 Tesla Model S last?

With good maintenance habits, the 2020 Tesla Model S can potentially provide over 200,000 miles or 10 years of service. Battery longevity is critical; Tesla warranties typically cover the battery for 8 years or 150,000 miles (depending on the model). However, factors like charging habits and climate can affect battery health. Weaknesses over time include potential degradation of the battery's capacity, suspension wear (especially air suspension), and the aging of electronic components. Regular software updates are vital to maintaining optimal performance and addressing potential issues. Proper charging habits and adherence to recommended service intervals will contribute significantly to its longevity.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2020 Tesla Model S is packed with advanced technology. The centerpiece is the 17-inch touchscreen that controls virtually all vehicle functions, including navigation, media, climate control, and vehicle settings. Entertainment features include streaming services, games, and internet browsing. Driver-assistance features include standard Autopilot, which provides adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist. Optional Full Self-Driving Capability (FSD) offers advanced features like automatic lane changes, traffic light and stop sign control, and automatic parking (though it is not truly "self-driving").

Safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind spot monitoring. Crash test ratings from NHTSA are generally 5-star overall, though specific sub-scores may vary. The IIHS has given the Model S good ratings in most crash tests, but specific awards depend on the model year's testing criteria. Optional features include premium audio, enhanced Autopilot (before FSD was widely offered), and different wheel options. The car also receives over-the-air software updates, which continuously improve and add new features.

2020 Tesla Model S Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2020 Tesla Model S ranged from approximately $79,990 to $99,990, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices vary significantly based on mileage, condition, and features, but generally range from $45,000 to $75,000. Depreciation is affected by factors such as battery health, mileage, and the availability of newer Tesla models with improved technology. Resale value is generally strong compared to other luxury sedans, but battery degradation and the introduction of new Tesla models with extended range can negatively impact value. The availability of Supercharger access and the presence of Autopilot or Full Self-Driving Capability also influence resale prices.

2020 Tesla Model S Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for the 2020 Tesla Model S can be higher than average due to its performance capabilities and repair costs. "Fuel" costs (electricity) are significantly lower than gasoline. Maintenance is generally less frequent than for gasoline cars, but specialized repairs can be expensive. Long-term ownership costs are a mixed bag; while electricity costs are lower, potential battery replacement and higher insurance rates can offset some savings. Overall, it can be considered economical in terms of energy costs, but potentially costly due to insurance and possible expensive repairs.

2020 Tesla Model S Insurance

Insurance for a 2020 Tesla Model S is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2020 Tesla Model S Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2020 Tesla Model S competes with luxury sedans like the Mercedes-Benz EQS, Porsche Taycan, Audi e-tron GT, and BMW i5. In terms of performance, the Model S offers faster acceleration than most rivals, especially in Performance trim. Features are comparable, with the Model S leading in its Supercharger network. Reliability is where the Model S lags, with some rivals having better-established reputations for build quality and fewer reported issues. Price-wise, the Model S is competitive, though similarly equipped alternatives can vary.

The Porsche Taycan offers a more engaging driving experience and arguably better build quality. The Mercedes EQS provides a more luxurious and comfortable interior. The Audi e-tron GT blends performance and luxury well. If reliability is a top priority, considering the Mercedes or Audi might be wise. For sheer acceleration and access to the Tesla charging infrastructure, the Model S remains a strong contender. A similar alternative focused on driving pleasure is the Taycan, while the EQS prioritizes comfort.

Final Verdict: Is the 2020 Tesla Model S a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2020 Tesla Model S is ideal for tech enthusiasts and those prioritizing performance and electric efficiency. It's worth buying if you value rapid acceleration, access to the Supercharger network, and a minimalist, tech-focused interior. Buying used can be a good option, but carefully inspect battery health and review the vehicle's service history. A Long Range model offers a good balance of range and performance. Be aware of potential build quality issues and factor in higher insurance costs. If reliability is paramount, consider alternatives like the Mercedes-Benz EQS or Porsche Taycan, but for sheer electric performance and a cutting-edge experience, the Model S remains compelling.

Great car, no more gas!

I had my Tesla S for about four months now. Its a great car. Have a Nemi 14-50 outlet in the garage for 40 amps. It charges faster than what the appl. says. Autopilot is about 80% self driving and is great in traffic. I don't think the extra $200 for FSD is worth it. It quiet and powerful. I go 150 to 175 miles between charges on a longer trip. Plenty of charge stations around

Smooth ride, low maintenance, great value!

I really like my Model S Long Range. I purchased it new in June 2020 and have had minor issues that were resolved quickly and with no hassle. When my left, thumb control stopped responding, I schedule a repair in my app. The mobile repair technician came to my house on the appointed day to replace it. The mobile repair guy has come by my work to rotate my tires too. Since I purchased my car under a promotion, I have free, unlimited Supercharging for the life of the car. Driving for free is an extra benefit that makes this car a dream to own.

Model S Performance is Amazing

Best car I have ever owned. Fast, comfortable and a great driver's car. Previously had a heavily tuned Audi S6 but the Model S performance has been a significant step up. First car where the technology improves the driving experience - all other ones I have owned I just defaulted to my cell phone for everything. Love charging at home. Only critique is that the fit and finish isn't up to German standards. Trade off is definitely worth it though.

Best Car I've Ever Had

Tesla Model S is the best car I've ever driven. It's fast, it's smooth and the technology that comes with it is lightyears ahead of anything that's out there today. 0-60 in 2.9 literally pulls your body into the seat like your on the Gravitron. Auto-Pilot is amazing and makes long drives a piece of cake as it drives for you. Still have to pay attention to the road but it is very adaptive and it's fun to watch the car drive itself. Charging is easy if you're just driving around the city. If you are taking it on a long trip, a quick 20 minute stop at a charging station every 3 hrs will keep you on your way. The interior is not like a Mercedes and would like to see Telsla update that some day. But everything else about this car is stellar. Would definitely recommend, especially if you're someone who likes having the latest and greatest tech

Service is awful

Tesla Service is absolutely awful. It has taken two months to get control arms replaced. They replaced windshield and now it leaks. They want to charge me for a second one because they say they don't warranty windshields. No joke. First you schedule a service issue. Then they schedule you three weeks out and diagnose the problem. Then they schedule you to come back in another 4 weeks to have the problem repaired. All the while they send you snarky text responses to your questions and tell you how all of this is your fault. They all need service at some point. I don't see this getting better any time soon. This was also the second time this happened. The first time was for severe shaking during acceleration. Same awful experience. Takes weeks to fix and you have to deal with snarky, condescending text messages on the app. BOTTOM LINE: DONT BUY A TESLA.

It just goes, and does it gracefully

What doesn't this car do? It's faster to 60 than an AMG GTR, with more back leg room than a Town Car (and a larger cargo space). It updates itself over the internet like your phone. It has the best bluetooth implementation I've ever seen. The entire roof is made of glass, so you can see the stars at night by looking up. You can make the most ridiculous merges because you know you have instant power, all while being more efficient than the gas car you now find obsolete. The major trade-off is travel distance, but at 348 miles per charge, and the average person driving just 40 miles a day... not far enough? Give me a break. If your job/lifestyle has you driving more than that, you're likely not reading this review anyway. Test drive a Tesla. You're gonna be surprised.

Terrible fit and finish

I traded in my models s 2017 for a long range plus and the fit and finish on the new car is terrible. I purchased back in March and due to lockdown delivery was unable to inspect closely when picked up. I was told that service would fix issues but now service is saying all these gaps and paint issues are Tesla tolerance. My advice when picking up go over with detail and take your time. Don’t let them rush you. If you have any doubt don’t accept the car as they won’t fix it at service unlike the promises. Wanted to write this review to advise others. Overall not a bad car but looks cheap with all the gaps.
