The 2000 Nissan Frontier is a compact pickup truck, a successor to the Nissan Hardbody. It offers a practical and affordable option for those needing a smaller truck. Body styles include regular and King Cab. Key trims were typically XE, SE, and LE. New, it ranged roughly from $12,000 to $20,000. Its ruggedness and simple design made it popular.
The Good

The 2000 Frontier offers decent performance for a compact truck. Reliability is a strong point. Its simple design appeals to practical buyers seeking a dependable workhorse. Some find its rugged looks appealing, fostering an emotional connection. It offers good value for the price.

The Bad

Weaknesses include a relatively small interior, especially in regular cab models. Rust can be a significant issue, particularly in areas with road salt. The automatic transmission, if equipped, should be checked for smooth shifting. The fuel economy isn't stellar compared to modern vehicles. Suspension components and ball joints are also worth inspecting.

What Problems Does the 2000 Nissan Frontier Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2000 Nissan Frontier often revolve around rust, especially in regions where road salt is used. The frame and body panels are particularly susceptible.

Other common issues include:
  • Timing Belt (V6): Requires replacement at regular intervals (typically around 60,000 miles) to prevent engine damage. Failure to do so can be catastrophic.
  • Automatic Transmission: Some owners have reported issues with hard shifting or complete failure. Regular fluid changes are crucial.
  • Fuel Sending Unit: Inaccurate fuel gauge readings are common.
  • Suspension Components: Ball joints and other suspension parts can wear out, leading to handling issues and requiring replacement.
  • Ignition Switch: Some reports of ignition switch failure, preventing the vehicle from starting.
Recalls for the 2000 Frontier have addressed issues like potential fuel leaks and seat belt problems. It's essential to check the vehicle's VIN for any outstanding recalls before purchase. Long-term reliability can be good with proper maintenance, but rust prevention is key to preserving the vehicle's structural integrity. Premature wear of bushings and seals may also occur.

How long will the 2000 Nissan Frontier last?

A well-maintained 2000 Nissan Frontier can easily reach 200,000 miles or more. With consistent maintenance, including timely oil changes, fluid flushes, and timing belt replacements (for the V6), many Frontiers have lasted well over 20 years. However, long-term durability is highly dependent on maintenance habits and environmental factors. Rust is a significant weakness, especially in colder climates. Components like the suspension, ball joints, and fuel pump may require replacement over time. Proper care will maximize its lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2000 Nissan Frontier is a relatively basic vehicle in terms of technology. Built-in tech is limited. Entertainment features typically included a standard AM/FM radio, with optional upgrades to include a cassette player or CD player. Driver-assistance features were minimal or non-existent; anti-lock brakes (ABS) were optional.

Safety features included standard airbags for the driver and front passenger. Side airbags were not available. Crash test ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA should be checked for specific results, but generally, compact trucks of this era didn't perform as well as modern vehicles in crash tests.

Optional features could include:
  • Air conditioning
  • Upgraded stereo system
  • Alloy wheels
  • Power windows and locks (depending on trim level)
  • Cruise control (depending on trim level)
The Frontier lacked modern tech like navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, or advanced safety systems. It focused on providing a functional and affordable truck rather than cutting-edge technology.

2000 Nissan Frontier Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2000 Nissan Frontier ranged from approximately $12,000 to $20,000, depending on the trim level and options. Currently, used market prices vary greatly based on condition, mileage, and location. Expect to find them anywhere from $2,000 to $8,000, or even less for models in poor condition. Depreciation has been significant, but the Frontier holds some resale value due to its reputation for reliability and its utility as a small pickup truck. Factors affecting resale value include rust, mechanical condition, and the presence of desirable options like four-wheel drive.

2000 Nissan Frontier Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2000 Nissan Frontier are typically relatively low due to its age and modest value. Fuel costs are moderate, dependent on driving habits and engine choice. Maintenance can be inexpensive if you handle basic tasks yourself. Repairs can be more costly if major components fail, particularly the transmission or engine. Long-term ownership costs can be reasonable if the truck is well-maintained and rust is prevented, but neglected examples can become costly.

2000 Nissan Frontier Insurance

Insurance for a 2000 Nissan Frontier is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Pickup Truck with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2000 Nissan Frontier Compare to Other Pickup Truck?

The 2000 Nissan Frontier competed with the Toyota Tacoma, Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S-10, and Mazda B-Series. In terms of reliability, the Frontier is generally comparable to the Tacoma, but the Tacoma often holds its value better. The Ranger offered a wider range of configurations and engine options, while the S-10 was generally less refined. The Mazda B-Series was essentially a rebadged Ranger.

In terms of performance, the V6 Frontier was competitive, but the four-cylinder was underpowered compared to some rivals. Features were generally basic across the class, with the Frontier being on par with its competitors. Price-wise, the Frontier was often slightly more affordable than the Tacoma.

Alternatives include:
  • Toyota Tacoma: Generally more expensive but often considered more reliable and holds its value better.
  • Ford Ranger: Offers more variety in configurations and engine choices.
If reliability and resale value are paramount, the Tacoma is a strong contender. If affordability and a wider range of options are desired, the Ranger is a good alternative. The Frontier occupies a solid middle ground, offering a balance of reliability, price, and utility.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Nissan Frontier a Good Pickup Truck?

The 2000 Nissan Frontier is ideal for budget-conscious buyers seeking a reliable and utilitarian compact pickup. It's a good choice for those who need a truck for light-duty tasks, commuting, or occasional hauling. It's worth buying *used*, provided it's been well-maintained and free from excessive rust. Look for models with the V6 engine for better performance. Avoid neglected examples. It's a solid and honest little truck that can still provide years of dependable service with proper care, but it is important to consider that it is now an older vehicle.

Fantastic vehicle!

I bought my 4x4 Nissan XE King cab 4 cylinder 2.4 l in 1999 brand new from the dealer. It was tight as you could get. I have 262,000 miles on it of which I've driven every single one. The timing chain finally gave out at 200,000 miles and I replaced the water pump head gasket a couple of valves CV boot transmission transfer case alternator shocks tires u-joints including the carrier bearing and put new springs on the back and a new bumper on the back. It's had a shell on it it's whole life and I covered the seats since I've had it. So the seats and the bed are in great condition practically perfect. It runs like a top and it seems like it's brand new. This is an excellent truck and I just can't get rid of it. I could never replace it with something as good as it is for the money that people would want to pay me for it. I highly recommend these trucks. It's a rarity to have a four-wheel drive extra cab four cylinder truck because typically they have a six cylinder motor. The motor is strong as heck. Even after the top end rebuild. Thank you Nissan!

222K+ and still kicking

Great truck. I have the 2.4L XE. I bought it used with 10K miles. I put over 210K on it with no problems. I just changed the head gasket and it runs nicely again. I can tell that she's lost some power over the years, but I wouldn't trade her for a brand new one. Still fun to drive. Outlasted two (2) girlfriends and never did anything crazy or unpredictable - unlike the girlfriends.

General Review

I have a 2000 Nissan Frontier regular cab XE which happens to be my first car. I enjoy it a lot so far, and I would recommend this car anyone looking to buy or own their first car. Considering that it nearly has 113,000 miles, it runs flawlessly. It’s reliable and very easy to DIY under the hood if need be. Although the 0 to 60 is poor and lacks many of the features cars have today, like powered windows and seats. The purpose of what the vehicle is used for is fulfilled perfectly which is getting from place A to B.

Best vehicle I've ever owned

I've had my 2000 nissan frontier SE extended cab for almost 19 years. Bought it used with about 15K miles. Got a few more miles on it now. Very dependable to this day - starts on the 1st turn, doesn't leak fluids, can haul a half yard of rock in the bed or a load of 2 bys laying across the roof rack. 4x4 can take you up through the snowy Sierras if needed. Go ahead and spend $50K + on some new hopped up truck but you'll never get the value like this frontier has given to me.

Best little truck I ever owned

Best little truck out there bar none. I bought it with 105000 miles in 2005. I’ve used as my daily driver as well as light hauling. I now have 300,000 plus mile on it. Put most of those miles when I would drive to a job I had that 75miles away. 150miles daily drive. Of course I’ve maintain it. Oil change every 5000 miles wipers, tires, brake, spark plugs, belts as needed New Shocks at 75K. I did have to replace the tranny at 200K but that was my only big expense. What I’ve replace between 200K and 300K. Alternator fuel pump, distributor cap n wires. Motor still solid. The only issue now is the speedometer quester which will need to be replace eventually. I drove it from San Antonio to Lille Rock and gave it to my daughter so she she and her hubby can use it. I wanted to keep it in the family. I really enjoyed this little truck. Hated to let it go. But i finally bought another Frontier and hoping it last as long as my 2000.

The best truck I have owned

I bought my 2000 Frontier CC 2WD SE in 1999, when it 1st came out. I have not a single problem with this truck. It has 155k miles on it now. Has lot of battle scars from 21 years on the road. I replaced the driver side headlight bulb recently for the 1st time. This week I replaced the struts and shocks and front rack and pinion bearings, as the shocks were shot and bearings worn out. You could hear the squeaking and rattle from half mile away. The mechanic who worked on the truck asked me if I would sell him the truck. He was so impressed with the truck. One of the best trucks made by Nissan. Next maintenance is to replace the timing belt. Its long over due. With that Fiona (my truck) will run another 100k

Most Reliable low cost vehicle ever.

Have owned this truck for 19 years, 195000 miles so far. Have replaced batteries and brake pads and belts at 100,000 miles. Original engine and auto transmission. Only weakness is tailgate latch which I have replaced myself twice- a $20 repair. Never used any oil. Still on original rear brakes. I wouldn't sell for $10,000. Best vehicle I have ever owned.
