The Good
The 2000 4Runner excels in reliability and off-road performance. Practical buyers appreciate its dependability and longevity, while emotional buyers are drawn to its adventurous spirit and rugged design. Comfort is decent, and it holds its value well. Though not the most fuel-efficient, its durability makes it a worthwhile investment for many.
The Bad
Known weaknesses of the 2000 4Runner include potential rust issues, especially in areas with salted roads. Lower ball joints are a common failure point and should be inspected regularly. The automatic transmission can also experience issues at higher mileages. Fuel economy is not its strong suit, and the ride can be truck-like.

What Problems Does the 2000 Toyota 4Runner Have?
Other potential problems include: rear differential issues in models with the locking rear differential, especially if not properly maintained; power antenna failure; and cracking dashboard (more common in warmer climates). Some owners have reported issues with the multi-mode 4WD system (if equipped), but these are less frequent.
While recalls were issued for earlier 4Runners (related to ball joints and spare tire carriers), specific recalls targeting the 2000 model year are less common. However, it's always wise to check the NHTSA website for any applicable recalls based on the VIN. Despite these potential issues, the 2000 4Runner is generally considered a very reliable vehicle, provided it has been well-maintained and any known problems are addressed promptly.
How long will the 2000 Toyota 4Runner last?
Long-term durability is a strong point, but weaknesses include rust, suspension component wear (ball joints, bushings), and potential transmission issues at high mileage. Ignoring rust can lead to significant structural problems. Addressing these potential issues proactively is key to maximizing the 4Runner's lifespan.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Driver-assistance features were also limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were standard, which was a good safety feature for the time. Traction control was sometimes offered as an option. The focus was on mechanical reliability and off-road capability rather than advanced technology.
Safety features included driver and passenger airbags. Side airbags were not available. Crash-test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally showed good results for frontal impacts, though side-impact protection was less impressive due to the vehicle's age and design.
Optional features included a sunroof, upgraded audio systems (with CD player), and a locking rear differential (for enhanced off-road performance). The absence of modern infotainment and driver-assistance tech is a key difference compared to newer vehicles. Buyers should prioritize safety and reliability over advanced features when considering a 2000 4Runner.

2000 Toyota 4Runner Prices and Market Value
The 4Runner holds its value remarkably well due to its reputation for reliability and off-road capability. Factors affecting resale value include rust (a major detractor), overall mechanical condition, maintenance records, and the presence of desirable features like the 3.4L V6 engine and 4WD. Low mileage is also a significant plus.

How Does the 2000 Toyota 4Runner Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Feature-wise, the 4Runner was often more basic compared to the Grand Cherokee and Explorer, which offered more luxury and technology options. Performance was comparable across the board, with the V6 engines offering adequate power. Price-wise, used 4Runners often command a premium due to their reputation for reliability.
Alternatives to the 2000 4Runner, depending on priorities, include a newer (but potentially higher mileage) 4Runner for improved safety and features, or a Nissan Pathfinder if you're looking for a similar level of reliability at a potentially lower price point. The Jeep Grand Cherokee could be considered for its blend of off-road capability and features, but be prepared for potentially higher maintenance costs. Ultimately, the 4Runner's legendary reliability often makes it the preferred choice, especially for those prioritizing longevity and off-road performance.

Final Verdict: Is the 2000 Toyota 4Runner a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?
Focus on SR5 or Limited trims for added features. A pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is crucial. Due to its age, buying a used 2000 4Runner is the only option. Be prepared to address potential maintenance items, but the 4Runner's inherent reliability makes it a worthwhile investment if chosen wisely.

4runner girl foreverMy first 4runner was a 2000. Over 100k miles on it when I purchased it used in 2005 and I fell in love! In 2018 I traded it in for a used 2005 model. 150k miles on the speedometer - just broken in. My son totalled it 2 weeks ago. Guess what I'm looking for?: my third 4runner

Greatest disappointment of any automobile ownedI love the vehicle but the body is about to fall off of the severely rusted frame. For some reason this vehicle was not included in the frame recall and now my 2000 4 Runner is not longer safe to drive. JT3VN39W5R0141745. My 94 4Runner has over 250000 miles on it and the frame is better than the 2000.

classi 2 boxI've always loved this body style 4 runner. To date, it is still my favorite. I wanted the Land Cruiser that it was designed to look like (J80 body) but that thing was and still is a gas guzzler. The 4 runner is known as a go anywhere vehicle and it does just that. The 4WD is easy to use, The vehicle is easy to see out of , and just super reliable. It isn't as peppy as the competition for that time period but at least it will get you there

I've never owned a more reliable carFirst, this model is very appealing, I think it's the best look. Second, it was cheap to keep. Even an engine overhaul was cheaper than a car payment. It's my daily driver as well as my camp vehicle and "let's run out to the lake for a night" vehicle. The interior has been super durable. Everything cleans up like new and for the driver seat to have only a small amount of wear after this many miles is a tribute to the maker. Plus, it's a manual, the most fun vehicle ever. Now that it's been overhauled, my mechanic says it's good for at least another hundred thousand. Its ac has always been cold, its power windows have always worked, it's been all around a great vehicle.

Great vehicleThis truck has been great to me. It hasn't let me down and is bulletproof. Yeah its 20 years old and has 300 thousand miles on it so it needs maintenance, but that was expected. Overall however, theres no other vehicle you could expect this kind of versatility and consistency from.
