The 2014 BMW X1 is a compact luxury crossover SUV, the first generation of the X1 line. Produced from 2009 (Europe) and 2012 (US), it offered a blend of BMW driving dynamics and SUV practicality. Key trims included the sDrive28i (rear-wheel drive) and xDrive28i/35i (all-wheel drive). New, pricing ranged from around $31,000 to $39,000. Its agile handling and premium feel in a compact package made it popular.
The Good

The 2014 BMW X1 provides engaging performance with its responsive engines and sporty handling, appealing to driving enthusiasts. It offers a comfortable ride and a premium interior. While not known for stellar reliability, it offers decent fuel efficiency for a small SUV. Its compact size makes it practical for city driving, with good cargo space for its class.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses of the 2014 BMW X1 include repair costs, which can be high due to its being a BMW. Some owners have reported issues with the water pump and oil leaks. The rear seats can feel cramped for taller passengers. The technology, while adequate, is not as advanced as newer vehicles.

What Problems Does the 2014 BMW X1 Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2014 BMW X1 often revolve around the cooling system, particularly the water pump and thermostat. These components are known to fail prematurely, leading to overheating and potential engine damage. Oil leaks, especially from the valve cover gasket and oil filter housing, are also commonly reported.
There have been some recalls for the 2014 X1, typically related to safety systems like airbags or fuel systems. It's crucial to check the VIN with BMW or the NHTSA to confirm if any recalls apply to a specific vehicle.
Long-term reliability can be a concern, as with many BMWs, due to the complexity of the engine and electronics. Repair costs tend to be higher than average. Models with the N20 engine (28i) have been known to experience timing chain issues, although less common in the 2014 model year compared to earlier years. Overall, proactive maintenance and addressing issues promptly are key to mitigating potential problems and ensuring long-term reliability. Regular oil changes and inspections are essential.

How long will the 2014 BMW X1 last?

With proper maintenance, a 2014 BMW X1 can reasonably reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Given its age, many are currently well past the 100,000-mile mark.
Long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance. Weaknesses over time include potential issues with the turbocharger, suspension components, and electrical systems. The cooling system remains a critical area of concern. Consistent maintenance, including timely fluid changes and addressing minor repairs promptly, will significantly impact the vehicle's lifespan.

Scam. They promised to take care 50/50 on a new monitor with back up cam. They lied. Called them many times even after the reopening with this pandemic. Went there personally they lied.

Disappointed! Ahave had BMW 's...Nvr again. Thinking going back to Benz. Side mirrors on x1 are small, adjustment is limited. Run flats are cheap made by Firestoneor Goodyear...not sure. Thought since car was made to order, and waited 8 weeks tires wld be Continental or Michellin....anything but the others. Air conditioner does not get cold, a high speed fan wld do the same job, AND it stops working when you stop for traffic, a light or stop sign. Not looking forward to 90 degree days with an air conditioner that goes on and off and Nvr blows cold air. Time to switch back to Mercedez Benz! (I wonder if dealer switched the tires....be ause I ordered 2 cars....and think I got a great price. I will Nvr know, will I.!)

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2014 BMW X1 comes standard with BMW's iDrive infotainment system (though an older version compared to newer models), Bluetooth connectivity, HD Radio, and a USB port. Optional features included a navigation system with a larger display, BMW Apps (allowing smartphone integration), and a premium Harman Kardon sound system.
Driver-assistance features were limited compared to today's standards, but available options included rear parking sensors. Standard safety features included stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and a suite of airbags.
The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) gave the 2014 BMW X1 its "Top Safety Pick" award. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) gave it a 4-star overall safety rating. More specifically, it scored 4 stars in frontal crash tests and 5 stars in side crash tests. The optional xenon headlights offered improved visibility. While not brimming with advanced driver-assistance tech like lane departure warning or blind-spot monitoring, its core safety features and crash test performance were respectable for its time.

2014 BMW X1 Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2014 BMW X1 ranged from approximately $31,000 to $39,000 depending on the trim and options.
Currently, used market prices typically range from $10,000 to $18,000, influenced by mileage, condition, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to age and the general trend of luxury vehicles depreciating faster than mainstream cars. Factors affecting resale value include a clean title, good maintenance records, low mileage, and desirable options like the Premium or Technology packages. The xDrive35i models often command a slightly higher price due to their more powerful engine.

2014 BMW X1 Cost of Ownership

The 2014 BMW X1 is generally considered moderately costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to its luxury status and repair costs. Fuel costs are reasonable, especially for the 28i models. However, maintenance and repair costs can be substantial. BMW parts and labor tend to be expensive. Addressing potential issues like cooling system problems promptly is crucial to prevent more costly repairs. Long-term ownership requires diligent maintenance to avoid significant expenses.

2014 BMW X1 Insurance

Insurance for a 2014 BMW X1 is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Passenger Sedan with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2014 BMW X1 Compare to Other Passenger Sedan?

The 2014 BMW X1 competed with vehicles like the Audi Q3, Mercedes-Benz GLA, and Acura RDX.
Performance: The X1, especially the xDrive35i, offered a sportier driving experience than many rivals.
Features: While its features were competitive for the time, some rivals offered more advanced technology.
Reliability: The X1's reliability is not as strong as the Acura RDX, which generally has a better track record. The Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLA can also present similar maintenance costs.
Price: Used X1s are competitively priced within the segment.
Alternatives to consider include:
  • Acura RDX: More reliable and spacious, but less sporty.
  • Audi Q3: Stylish and refined, but potentially similar maintenance costs.
  • Mercedes-Benz GLA: Offers a luxurious interior and updated technology, but can be pricier.
If reliability is a top priority, the Acura RDX is a better choice. If a sportier driving experience is paramount, the X1 remains a compelling option, provided potential maintenance costs are factored in.

Final Verdict: Is the 2014 BMW X1 a Good Passenger Sedan?

The 2014 BMW X1 is ideal for individuals who prioritize a sporty driving experience and a premium feel in a compact SUV. It's worth buying used if you're comfortable with the potential for higher maintenance costs associated with a BMW. The xDrive35i offers the most engaging performance, but the sDrive28i and xDrive28i are more fuel-efficient.
It's essential to have a pre-purchase inspection performed by a qualified mechanic to identify any existing or potential issues. A well-maintained example with detailed service records is crucial. If you value reliability above all else, other options might be a better fit.

BMWX1 2014- never again

Only 60k miles . Light usage. Cooling system Thermostat stopped working. Oil seals on front/ back started to leak oil. Driver door handle started to disintegrate. Gas smell on left back discovered gas leaking under seat left side. Uses 89/91 octane fuel. Expensive in todays economy. Never again will I buy BMW- new or used. My Toyota Highlander hyrid drove 130k miles for sales use with not a problem as well as my Fird Escape Hybrid. This car was Well maintained when purchased used at 25k miles and well naintained since acquiring

Great BMW

This small car has lot of room, lots of nice features, and is very fun to drive. The dash is bit old school in terms of plastics. But, under the skin, this is a 3 Series, and it handles and feels like a BMW. The new X1 lacks the feel and handling, but has a nice interior. I will take this one!

car according to my wishes

The first time when I saw BMW X1, and when I did a test drive, I realized that she fulfilled all my requirements, expectations and wishes. I just love this car. Then, all the others cars I tested, didn't give me the same satisfaction as BMW X1.

Do not like locking system for back doors.

Like it except for locking system and pull down trunk. Would like all doors to unlock at same it! Like how easy it is to park and also fold in side view mirrors.
