The 2002 Chevrolet Corvette is a sports car from the C5 generation (1997-2004), known for its blend of performance and value. Available as a coupe, convertible, and the high-performance Z06, it offered iconic styling. Key trims included the base model, Z06, and options like the Magnetic Selective Ride Control. Original pricing ranged from around $40,000 to $50,000+ depending on options and the specific trim. Its sleek design and potent LS1 engine made it a popular choice for enthusiasts.
The Good

The 2002 Corvette offers a compelling mix of advantages. Performance is a strong suit with its powerful engine. It is relatively reliable for a sports car. Comfort is surprisingly good for long trips. Its iconic design appeals emotionally. It provides excellent value for the performance offered and decent fuel efficiency for its class.

The Bad

Potential weaknesses include the steering column lock issue (though often addressed), wear and tear on interior components, and potential electrical gremlins. Watch for the condition of the seats and ensure all electronic features function correctly. The Harmonic Balancer is a known weak point on the LS1 Engine and should be inspected. Overall, preventative maintenance is important.

What Problems Does the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette include issues with the steering column lock, which could prevent the car from starting. While not always a widespread problem, it's a common concern. Another reported issue is related to the harmonic balancer on the LS1 engine, which can degrade over time and cause engine damage if not addressed. The 2002 model year, like others in the C5 generation, may experience wear and tear on interior components such as the seats and dashboard. Some owners have reported electrical issues, including problems with the headlights, radio, and climate control system. Recalls for the C5 Corvette generation existed, primarily related to the aforementioned steering column lock issue and potential fuel leakage problems, so checking recall history is crucial. Long-term reliability concerns often revolve around the condition of the drivetrain, particularly the transmission and differential, after many years of use. Furthermore, the plastic fuel tanks are susceptible to damage over time, although this is less common. Proper maintenance, including regular fluid changes and inspections, is essential to mitigate these potential problems and ensure long-term reliability.

How long will the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette last?

Given good maintenance, a 2002 Chevrolet Corvette can easily last over 200,000 miles or 20+ years. Many well-maintained examples are still on the road today. However, long-term durability depends heavily on maintenance habits. Neglecting fluid changes, ignoring warning signs, or postponing repairs will shorten its lifespan. Weaknesses over time include bushing wear, suspension component degradation, and potential issues with the electrical system and sensors. The condition of the interior, especially the leather seats, can also show age. Regular servicing, careful driving, and addressing problems promptly are key to extending its life.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Chevrolet Corvette's built-in tech, while not cutting-edge by modern standards, included decent features for its time. The standard entertainment system comprised a Bose audio system with a CD player. Dual-zone climate control was standard.
Driver-assistance features were limited, consisting primarily of anti-lock brakes (ABS) and traction control. Optional features included a head-up display (HUD) that projected key information onto the windshield and the Magnetic Selective Ride Control, an adaptive suspension system.
Safety features included driver and passenger airbags. Side airbags were not available.
Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) for the 2002 Corvette are as follows:
Driver: 5 stars
Passenger: 4 stars
Side Impact: Not Rated
Rollover: Not Rated
It's important to note that safety technology has advanced significantly since 2002, and modern vehicles typically offer a broader range of safety features and potentially higher crash-test ratings. The 2002 Corvette relied more on its inherent handling and braking capabilities for safety. Its safety features were generally on par with other vehicles of the early 2000s. The HUD was an innovative and helpful feature in its time.

2002 Chevrolet Corvette Prices and Market Value

The 2002 Chevrolet Corvette had a starting MSRP of around $41,000 for the base coupe and convertible, with the Z06 starting around $48,000. Today, used market prices range from approximately $15,000 to $30,000+, depending on condition, mileage, and trim. The Corvette has depreciated considerably but has likely leveled off. Factors affecting resale value include mileage, condition (especially paint and interior), documented maintenance history, and the presence of desirable options. Z06 models typically command a premium. Low-mileage examples in excellent condition can fetch higher prices, especially among collectors.

2002 Chevrolet Corvette Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 2002 Corvette can be moderate to high, reflecting its sports car status and potential for higher repair costs. Fuel costs depend on driving habits, but expect average fuel consumption for a performance vehicle. Maintenance costs are reasonable for a domestic car, but repairs can be expensive, especially for drivetrain components. Long-term ownership costs are moderate if preventative maintenance is followed. While not economical, it's not excessively costly to own compared to other sports cars, especially if you can perform some maintenance yourself.

Recall date 2004-02-09
Recall no. 04v060000
Source NHTSA
Summary ON Certain Passenger Vehicles Equipped With Electronic Column Lock Systems (Ecl), When THE Ignition Switch IS Turned TO "lock," THE ECL System Prevents Turning OF THE Steering System. When THE Vehicle IS Started, THE ECL Unlocks THE Steering System. THE Vehicle IS Designed SO That IF THE Column Fails TO Unlock When THE Vehicle IS Started and THE Customer Tries TO Drive, THE Fuel Supply Will BE Shut OFF SO That THE Vehicle Cannot Move When THE Vehicle Cannot BE Steered. IF Voltage AT THE Powertrain Control Module IS Low or Interrupted, However, THE Fuel Shut OFF MAY NOT Occur and THE Vehicle CAN BE Accelerated While THE Steering System IS Locked. Also When THE Control System Shows That THE ECL IS Unlocked and THE Vehicle IS Being Driven, THE Lock PIN Location CAN Vary. Depending ON THE Location OF THE Lock Plate Relative TO THE Switch Transition Point, There Could Then BE Contact Between THE Lock Plate and PIN Causing THE Steering TO Lock While Driving .
Consequence IF This Occurs, A Crash Could Occur Without Warning.
Remedy ON Vehicles Equipped With AN Automatic Transmission, THE Dealer Will Disable THE Steering Column Lock BY Removing THE Column Lock Plate. When THE Ignition KEY IS Removed, THE Transmission Shifter Will Lock BUT THE Steering Column Will NOT Lock. ON Vehicles Equipped With A Manual Transmission, THE Dealer Will Reprogram THE Powertrain Control Module, Perform A Dimensional Check OF THE Column Lock And, IF Necessary, Replace THE Lock Plate. THE Steering Column ON These Vehicles Will Continue TO Lock When THE KEY IS Removed. Owner Notification TO Owners OF 1997 Vehicles Equipped With Automatic Transmissions Began ON April 26, 2004. Owners OF 1998 Through 2004 Vehicles (Except 1997-1998 Manual Transmission Vehicles) Will BE Notified Beginning ON August 2, 2004. 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Insurance

Insurance for a 2002 Chevrolet Corvette is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette Compare to Other Coupe?

The 2002 Chevrolet Corvette competed with sports cars like the Porsche 911, BMW Z8, and Dodge Viper. Compared to the Porsche 911, the Corvette offered significantly better value for money in terms of performance, though the 911 had a more refined interior and arguably better handling. Against the BMW Z8, the Corvette offered more raw power at a lower price point, although the Z8 had a more luxurious feel. Compared to the Dodge Viper, the Corvette was easier to live with daily and had better fuel economy.
In terms of reliability, the Corvette is generally considered more reliable than the Viper but less so than the Porsche 911. Features-wise, the Corvette offered a decent array of options, but the 911 and Z8 offered more premium features, albeit at a higher cost.
Alternatives to the 2002 Corvette include later C5 Corvettes (2003-2004) or early C6 Corvettes (2005-2007) for slightly more modern features and performance. A Porsche Boxster could be considered for a more balanced sports car experience, but at a similar price, it would lack the Corvette’s straight-line speed. For sheer performance, the Nissan 350Z is an affordable alternative, albeit with a less refined interior.

Ranks #236 Coupe

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette a Good Coupe?

The 2002 Chevrolet Corvette is ideal for driving enthusiasts who appreciate performance and iconic styling without breaking the bank. It's worth buying *used* if you're looking for a fun, capable sports car at an affordable price. The Z06 trim is highly desirable for its enhanced performance, but even the base models offer plenty of excitement. Before buying, ensure a thorough inspection is performed to address potential issues like the steering column lock, harmonic balancer, and any electrical gremlins. A well-maintained, lower-mileage example is preferred. The 2002 Corvette provides a great blend of performance and value, making it a worthwhile purchase for the right buyer.

Truly an American dream car!

It truly is an American dream car... fast, reliable, easy to maintain, quick response, surprisingly good gas mileage better than my Nissan XTerra, and most of all very affordable sports car in the market. Most maintenance can be done by an average DIYer and there's a glut of after market parts available everywhere. I have a convertible triple black and it gets admired every time I'm on the road. This is my first Corvette and with my age, probably not my last.

Most underrated sports car on the market

I’ve owned my 2002 convertible since 2005 and get excited every time I drive it. It’s blue and I get a lot of comments such as it being the nicest car the person has seen. The performance is amazing. Weight displacement is the best of any corvette. Surprisingly gets decent mileage. Though I wouldn’t sell mine for less than 40k there are some on the market for half that. Why drive a new Toyota when you can drive a used corvette that will change your driving experience. Besides, ever hear anyone say, “Nice Toyota!”?

Great Value sports car !

Having owned numerous sports cars over the years this is my favorite one ! Great bang for the buck, fast, smooth, well handling and all for less than the price of a new car. Drives like a Cadillac on the highway, but handles like it's on rails going through the mountains. We enjoy the removable targa top, and the magnetic ride control is wonderful for allowing you to dial in ride comfort / control. Very reliable, easy to maintain, with 25MPG cruising down the road.

Whole lotta Fun!

I bought my 02 Z06 two months ago. I traded a very clean, well maintained Yamaha FJR 1300, which I loved. There have been days when I miss my bike dreadfully but when I do, I take my vette out for a drive - weather permitting. It's not a bike but is still a riot to drive. For the money, I would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a refined sports car that is not ridiculously priced. If you're thinking about grabbing one, do it!! You won't be disappointed.

Z06 really makes the difference

I love this car and it beats $100k for a new one. Rare 6 speed manual is the only way to have it and your can’t beat the miles.

My Second Vette in 36 years

I owned a 1981 Stingray in my youth - and kicked myself everyday for selling it (down payment on a house). After deciding to buy another one in 2020 - I went with a 2002 Convertible. At 46,000 miles and a single owner I couldn't pass this bargain up. I love the car. Fun to drive, great gas mileage and a lot of get up and GO!

First Vette but not the last.

I've owned several Euro sports cars, the fastest be a Jaguar XK8, but this is my first Corvette. I bought a 2002 in 2019 with just 66k miles. I've done lots of upgrades like interior and exhaust, not because it needed it, but because I wanted it. I've also do a lot of preventive maintenance just for peace of mind, like radiator flush and fill, etc. Headlight motors are the Achilles heel of the vehicle. The motor itself is not the issue, but rather the plastic cogs teeth break and make the motor grind and eventually have to be replaced. Chevy wants $600 each for replacement, parts and labor. You can get them online for about $75 each, go to YouTube for a tutorial and do it yourself, there's nothing to it. My friend changed the cogs on his motors to brass, which are also available(Ebay), which solves the problem all together. This thing is a beast and bullet proof. It's 17 years old and run like a bat out of xxxx. The OEM run flat Goodyear tires are expensive, roughly $2,000 for the set, but hugs the road like crazy. The styling is timeless and gets compliments all the time. The targa top comes off and fits easily into the back cargo area, not the mention tons of storage space for traveling. A dealer since the 70's told me he's driven every generation since the 60's and told me this one by far is the most comfortable, even going cross country. I love everything about this car, and though it's my first, it won't be my last.
