What Problems Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Have?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, while generally reliable, has some frequently reported problems. Air suspension failures are a common concern, leading to expensive repairs. The Airmatic system, while providing a smooth ride, is prone to leaks and compressor issues. The complex COMAND infotainment system can also experience glitches, including screen freezes, navigation problems, and Bluetooth connectivity issues.

Electrical problems, such as sensor malfunctions and issues with the door locks, have also been reported. Oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gaskets and the oil filter housing, can develop as the car ages. Some owners have reported issues with the automatic transmission, although these are less frequent than the suspension and electrical problems.

Recalls for the 2016 S-Class have included issues related to the fuel pump, potential problems with the seat belt pre-tensioners, and concerns about the emergency call system (eCall) malfunctioning. Owners should check the NHTSA website for the latest recall information and ensure all applicable recalls have been addressed. Long-term reliability depends heavily on maintenance. Neglecting scheduled service can exacerbate existing problems and lead to more significant issues down the road. Models with the V12 engine tend to be more expensive to maintain due to their complexity.

How long will the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class last?

With proper maintenance, a 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class can easily reach 150,000 to 200,000 miles or more. Many owners report 10+ years of service. However, long-term durability hinges on consistent maintenance. The air suspension is a known weak point, often requiring replacement around the 80,000-120,000 mile mark. Electronic components can also be a source of issues as the car ages. Preventative maintenance, such as regular oil changes and fluid checks, is crucial to maximizing longevity and avoiding costly repairs.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class boasts a comprehensive suite of technology and safety features. Standard features include the COMAND infotainment system with a 12.3-inch display, navigation, Bluetooth connectivity, and a premium audio system. Driver-assistance features include collision prevention assist, lane keeping assist, blind spot monitoring, and a rearview camera.

Optional features include adaptive cruise control (Distronic Plus), active lane keeping assist, active blind spot assist, night view assist, a surround-view camera system, and a head-up display. The S-Class also offered Magic Body Control, which scans the road ahead and adjusts the suspension for optimal ride comfort. The optional Executive Rear Seat Package provides reclining rear seats with massage functions and individual climate control.

For entertainment, the S-Class offered a rear-seat entertainment system with dual screens and wireless headphones. Safety is paramount, with features like multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and anti-lock brakes. While specific crash-test ratings for the 2016 S-Class may vary depending on the agency (IIHS or NHTSA), the S-Class is generally regarded as a very safe vehicle due to its advanced safety technologies and robust construction. It typically earns high marks in safety evaluations.

2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class ranged from approximately $95,000 to over $220,000, depending on the trim and options. Current used market prices typically range from $25,000 to $50,000 or more, depending on mileage, condition, and trim level. The S-Class depreciates significantly, especially in the first few years. Higher mileage examples and those with a less desirable color combination will depreciate more. Resale value is affected by factors such as maintenance history, the presence of original documentation, and overall condition. AMG models tend to hold their value better than the base S550.

2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a costly vehicle to own. Insurance premiums are high due to its value and performance. Fuel costs can be significant, especially with the V8 and V12 engines. Maintenance, including scheduled services and potential repairs to the air suspension or complex electronics, is expensive. Expect higher repair bills than average. Long-term ownership requires a substantial financial commitment. It's not an economical vehicle, but buyers prioritize luxury and performance over affordability.

How Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz S-Class competes with the BMW 7 Series, Audi A8, Lexus LS, and Porsche Panamera. In terms of performance, the S-Class AMG models rival the Panamera and 7 Series, offering exhilarating acceleration. The Audi A8 offers similar luxury with quattro all-wheel drive. The Lexus LS prioritizes reliability and comfort, at a slightly lower price point but lacks the same level of performance and prestige.

Feature-wise, the S-Class is generally considered to be ahead of the curve with its advanced technology and driver-assistance systems, though the 7 Series and A8 are close competitors. Reliability is where the S-Class can falter compared to the Lexus LS, which is known for its bulletproof reliability. Price-wise, the S-Class is generally more expensive than the Lexus LS but comparable to the BMW 7 Series and Audi A8.

Alternatives to the S-Class include the BMW 7 Series (for a sportier driving experience), the Audi A8 (for advanced technology and all-wheel drive), and the Lexus LS (for unparalleled reliability and a more comfortable ride). The Porsche Panamera offers a more driver-focused experience. Whether an alternative is "better" depends entirely on the buyer's priorities.

Poetry in motion.

This car should be classified as an “exotic”. The S550 Coupe is by far the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. Well, our 2008 S63 AMG was a monster, but very heavy. The ride is harsher than expected over rough roads, but it isn’t close to a deal killer. The interior is perfect, but the controls were clunky at first….until you get used to it.

Dream Automobile

Mercedes’-Benz of Bedford is a top of the class dealership. From initial contact to delivery the total experience was a joy. The MB S550 I purchased was everything I could want or dream of in a luxury car. It is stunning! I have back issues and the back support is exceptional. Road noise and bumps are greatly attenuated. Best car I’ve ever owned.
