The Good
The 2006 SL-Class offers thrilling performance, particularly in AMG variants, and a comfortable, luxurious ride. Its striking design and retractable hardtop provide emotional appeal. From a practical standpoint, it offers Mercedes-Benz build quality and a relatively refined driving experience for a sports car. Later models may offer a good value proposition on the used market.
The Bad
Potential weaknesses of the 2006 SL-Class include the complex hydraulic systems (especially the ABC suspension), which can be expensive to repair. Electronic glitches are also relatively common. Reliability can be a concern compared to some competitors. Prospective buyers should carefully inspect the car's service history and condition.

What Problems Does the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Have?
Recalls for the 2006 SL-Class have been issued for issues such as potential fuel leaks and brake system problems. Long-term reliability can be a concern, particularly as these vehicles age. The rubber seals and hoses throughout the car can degrade, leading to leaks and malfunctions. Engine oil leaks, particularly around the valve cover gaskets, are also reported. Regular maintenance and preventative care are crucial, but even with careful upkeep, these cars can be expensive to maintain due to the complexity of their systems. Prior models may have had more issues in earlier years, whereas later 2006 vehicles might have benefitted from updates or improvements during production, but general reliability concerns persist across the model year.

How Does the 2006 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class Compare to Other Convertible?
Reliability is where the SL-Class struggles compared to some rivals. The BMW 6 Series and Porsche 911 generally have better reliability ratings. The Jaguar XK also had its share of issues. Regarding price, the SL-Class was competitive when new, but on the used market, repair costs can make it a less attractive option.
Alternatives to consider include a newer BMW Z4 or Porsche Boxster for a more reliable and modern roadster experience. If performance is a priority and budget allows, a newer Porsche 911 convertible would be a better choice. For those prioritizing luxury and style, and are willing to accept potential maintenance costs, the SL-Class may still be appealing. For someone focused on long-term reliability, the 911 or Z4 would be more sensible options.

Things an animalAlways wanted an sl55 amg and finally found one for a reasonable price. The ABC suspension is a huge expense but the car is solid aside from that. With a few modifications and consistent upkeep this car will be a classic sports car for years to come.

Worst car I have ever purchasedThe car is totally unsafe is in limp mode no brakes the tires are unsafe due to being run flat the wheels have to be replaced they are bent the ABC system was filled with unapproved oil that compromised the suspension and body control system

Best bang for your money in a two seater. This car has incredible power, a smooth and comfortable ride and opulent interior materials. The Varioroof is great. It is a blast to drive. It is a very complex car and would be very expensive to maintain and repair if you can't do some of the work yourself.

Very civilized sports carI have had several sports cars and luxury convertibles. This car is the best of both worlds. It is nice to drive top up or down. I never wanted to test its top end, but it was always sure footed and felt it could do what ever I asked.

STUNNING Mercedes Benz SL55 AMG KompressorThe Mercedes-Benz SL55 is surely one of the most beautiful cars ever produced! From the jutting chin of its front bumper to its four-eyed headlamps; from its racy front fender air intakes to the sexy shoulders over its rear tires, the SL55 was not only the style leader for Mercedes-Benz but for the entire high-performance roadster segment.
