What Problems Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class include issues with the infotainment system, specifically glitches and unresponsiveness. Some owners have reported problems with the navigation system freezing or malfunctioning. Electronic component failures, such as issues with sensors and control modules, have also been documented. Some GLA models have experienced problems with the air conditioning system, including compressor failures and refrigerant leaks. Premature wear of brake components, including rotors and pads, has been reported by some owners, especially those who drive aggressively. Additionally, minor oil leaks have been noted in some instances, although these are not typically widespread. Recalls for the 2016 GLA-Class can vary, but it's crucial to check the NHTSA website for any active recalls related to specific VINs. Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the complexity of the vehicle's electronics and the potential for higher maintenance costs associated with a luxury brand. Regularly scheduled maintenance and proactive addressing of any warning signs are crucial to mitigating potential issues. Model year variations in reported problems are not significantly pronounced, but it's always best to check owner forums and reliability reports specific to the 2016 model year before purchasing.

How long will the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class last?

With regular maintenance, a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class can realistically provide 150,000 to 200,000 miles or 10-15 years of service. However, longevity heavily depends on adherence to the recommended maintenance schedule and addressing issues promptly. Long-term durability can be affected by the complexity of the vehicle's electronics, potentially leading to failures over time. Weaknesses can emerge in the suspension components, especially with frequent use on rough roads. Engine and transmission maintenance are crucial for maximizing lifespan. Careful owners can expect reliable service, while neglecting maintenance could lead to premature component failures.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class features a decent array of tech, entertainment, driver-assistance, and safety features. Standard tech includes a 7-inch central display, Bluetooth connectivity, and a rearview camera. Entertainment options include a six-speaker audio system, with optional upgrades like a Harman Kardon sound system. Driver-assistance features were available as optional packages, including blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist. Safety features include standard airbags, antilock brakes, and stability control. Optional safety features included collision prevention assist and a driver attention monitor.

The infotainment system, while functional, is not as intuitive or modern as some competitors' systems. The display screen can feel small by today's standards. The driver-assistance features, when equipped, enhance safety and convenience, but they were not standard on all trims.

Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) and NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) should be checked for the 2016 model year to assess overall safety performance. These ratings typically evaluate performance in various crash scenarios, providing insights into the vehicle's ability to protect occupants in the event of an accident. Availability of these advanced driver-assistance and safety features significantly adds value to the vehicle.

Optional features:
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Heated Front Seats
  • Navigation System
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Parking Assist

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class had an MSRP ranging from approximately $33,000 for the base GLA250 to around $54,000 for the AMG GLA45. Current used market prices vary depending on mileage, condition, and features, but expect a range of approximately $15,000 to $30,000. Depreciation has been significant, as is typical for luxury vehicles. Factors affecting resale value include the car's condition, mileage, service history, and the presence of desirable options like all-wheel drive and driver-assistance packages. Lower mileage and a clean title will command higher prices. The AMG variant generally holds its value better due to its performance credentials.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Cost of Ownership

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is generally considered relatively costly to own. Insurance premiums are higher than average due to the Mercedes-Benz brand and potential repair costs. Fuel costs are moderate, but premium fuel is recommended. Maintenance, especially at authorized dealerships, can be expensive. Repairs, particularly for electronic components, can be substantial. Long-term ownership costs should factor in potential for component failures, which can drive up expenses. Economical it is not, but the luxury and brand appeal offset some of the higher running costs.

2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Insurance

Insurance for a 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class competes with the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Lexus NX. In terms of performance, the AMG GLA45 offers superior power compared to most rivals, while the base GLA250 is comparable. Feature-wise, it's generally competitive, although some rivals may offer more standard equipment. Reliability is a potential weakness compared to the Lexus NX, which is known for its strong reliability. The BMW X1 often scores higher in driving dynamics and interior space.

Price-wise, the GLA-Class is generally in the same ballpark as its German competitors, but may be slightly more expensive than the Lexus NX. Alternatives to consider include:
  • BMW X1: Offers more interior space and engaging driving dynamics.
  • Audi Q3: Stylish design and comfortable ride.
  • Lexus NX: Excellent reliability and a comfortable interior.
  • Acura RDX: Larger and more practical, with a reputation for reliability.

If reliability is a primary concern, the Lexus NX is a better alternative. If driving dynamics and space are important, the BMW X1 is a strong contender. For a balance of features and style, the Audi Q3 is worth considering. The GLA-Class stands out for its AMG variant's performance, but its reliability should be carefully considered before purchasing.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2016 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is ideal for buyers seeking a stylish, compact luxury crossover with available sporty performance (especially the AMG GLA45). It's a good choice for individuals or small families who prioritize brand prestige and agile handling. It's worth buying if you appreciate the Mercedes-Benz brand and are willing to accept potentially higher maintenance costs. Purchasing a used GLA250 with a well-documented service history and low mileage can be a good value. Thoroughly inspect any used GLA for potential electronic issues and brake wear. The AMG GLA45 is worth considering for performance enthusiasts, but factor in higher running costs.

a car with the best value and economy.............

Purchased in 2015, nothing is broken except consumables until 2023. It has a bit of a turborek, so it's less driving, but it has an agile driving feeling.

Very sporty, handles extremely well.

Awesome vehicle. We drove it 759 miles in the first two days of owning it. Much of that driving was down through the Ozark Mountains to Grandson's graduation. We fell in love with the awesome pep and handling this car has. We are fans!

Best car I've ever owned

Far exceeds any car I've owned to date in style, comfort, reliability, handling, and overall performance. I'm incredibly happy with this purchase and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a small SUV/crossover with the best features.

This may be the best car I have owned

This car is fun to drive. It's a good size on the outside and plenty of room inside. It doesn't't have Apple CarPlay but all the other features you want in a luxurious sporty car. Mercedes Benz quality shows.

Reliable car

I really enjoy driving this car. In the 2.5 years that I've owned it, I only needed to replace a flat tire ($200). I wish the trunk was bigger and I would not purchase white/beige leather seats again because they get stains on them. I love the sunroof.

Great vehicle

This a great vehicle which meets my current needs. It has all the quality that Mercedes Benz offers, plus comfort and so many features! This smaller engine gets better gas mileage, but still has great acceleration. Handles fantastic - great on curves and manipulating through traffic. The instrument layout is excellent. Almost every detail shows MB quality and attention to detail. The interior is luxurious and well appointed. The rear seat is slightly cramped, but smaller passengers and cargo are no problem at all. The only moderate criticism is that the 7-speed automatic transmission is not as smooth on my vehicle- especially downshifting, which has a very mild "lurching" occasionally - - the shifting between gears could be smoother for sure. Still - a great vehicle and I love it.
