Rating: 4.43
Based on 53 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 1999 Ford Mustang, part of the fourth generation (1994-2004), carries the torch of American muscle. Offered as a coupe or convertible, it provides classic Mustang styling with modern touches. Key trims include the base model, GT, and the high-performance Cobra. Expect a pricing range of a few thousand to around $10,000+ on the used market depending on condition and trim. It stands out due to its affordability, powerful engine options, and customization potential, making it a popular choice for enthusiasts.
The Good

The 1999 Mustang provides good performance, particularly the GT with its V8. While not the most reliable, it's relatively simple to maintain. The design evokes classic Mustang nostalgia, appealing to emotional buyers. For practical buyers, it offers a good value for the performance and a decent amount of comfort for a sports car.

The Bad

Weaknesses include the solid rear axle, which can hinder handling compared to independent suspensions. Watch out for rust, especially in areas with road salt. The plastic interior parts can be prone to cracking and wear. Some owners report issues with the 4.6L V8, such as spark plug threads stripping.

What Problems Does the 1999 Ford Mustang Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 1999 Ford Mustang often revolve around age-related wear and tear. Rust is a significant concern, especially in regions with harsh winters where road salt is used. Owners should inspect the undercarriage, rocker panels, and around the wheel wells for rust. The plastic interior components are known to crack and fade over time.
Regarding the engines, the 4.6L V8 can experience issues with spark plug threads stripping in the aluminum cylinder heads, leading to costly repairs. The automatic transmissions can also develop issues over time, such as slipping or hard shifting. The T-45 manual transmission, found in some GT models, isn't known for being particularly robust under hard use. The independent rear suspension (IRS) found in the Cobra models, while offering superior handling, can be more complex and expensive to repair than the solid rear axle found in other trims.
Recalls were issued for various issues, including potential fuel leaks and issues with the airbags. Check the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website with the VIN to determine if the specific vehicle has outstanding recalls. Long-term reliability can vary significantly depending on how well the car was maintained and driven. Neglect can lead to a cascade of problems.

How long will the 1999 Ford Mustang last?

Given the age of the 1999 Ford Mustang, many examples have likely accumulated well over 150,000 miles. With diligent maintenance, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs, they can potentially reach 200,000 miles or more. However, expect increased maintenance needs as the vehicle ages. Long-term durability is often affected by rust, suspension wear (especially bushings and shocks), and engine component degradation (seals, gaskets). Keeping up with preventive maintenance is crucial to prolonging its lifespan. The solid rear axle, while simple, can contribute to a harsher ride over time as bushings wear out. The longevity of the engine often depends on how well it was treated throughout its life.

Negative Owner Reviews
John B.
I'm a big Mustang fan, but this generation isn't my favorite. The interior feels cheap, and the handling isn't as tight as the Fox body Mustangs. Still a decent car for the money, though.
David K.
It's an older car, so expect some wear and tear. My Mustang has a few rust spots and some minor issues, but it's still a lot of fun to drive. It gets a lot of attention too.
Lisa G.
I bought this Mustang thinking it would be more fuel-efficient, but it's not great on gas. Still, it's a fun car to drive, and I enjoy the sporty feel. Be prepared for more frequent fill-ups.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 1999 Ford Mustang offered relatively basic technology for its time.
Tech & Entertainment: Standard models came with an AM/FM radio and optional cassette or CD player. Upgraded sound systems were available on higher trims. Navigation systems and advanced infotainment features were not available.
Driver-Assistance: Driver-assistance features were limited. Anti-lock brakes (ABS) were available as an option. Traction control was sometimes offered, primarily on GT and Cobra models.
Safety Features: Standard safety features included dual front airbags. Side airbags were not available.
Optional Features: Keyless entry, power windows, power locks, and cruise control were often optional.
Crash-Test Ratings: The 1999 Ford Mustang received mixed crash-test ratings from the NHTSA. Frontal crash tests typically scored reasonably well, but side-impact protection was lacking. Rollover ratings were also a concern. The convertible version generally had lower ratings than the coupe. These ratings reflect the safety standards of the late 1990s, which are significantly different from modern vehicles. It is important to remember that older vehicles often lack the advanced safety technologies found in newer cars, such as electronic stability control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. Therefore, prioritize safety when considering a classic vehicle like the 1999 Mustang.

1999 Ford Mustang Prices and Market Value

When new, the 1999 Ford Mustang ranged from around $16,000 for a base model to upwards of $27,000 for a Cobra. Today, used market prices vary widely based on condition, mileage, and trim level. Expect to pay anywhere from $3,000 to $12,000+, with Cobra models commanding a premium. Depreciation has been significant, but well-maintained examples, particularly Cobra models or those with low mileage, can hold their value better. Factors affecting resale value include condition, mileage, trim level, originality, and overall demand in the collector car market.

1999 Ford Mustang Cost of Ownership

Insurance costs for a 1999 Mustang can vary based on driving record and coverage. Fuel costs depend on driving habits and engine choice, with the V8s being less economical. Maintenance and repair costs can be moderate, depending on the vehicle's condition. Parts are generally available and affordable, but specialized repairs, particularly on Cobra models, can be pricier. Overall, the 1999 Mustang is not the most economical car to own, especially considering potential maintenance needs and fuel consumption, but it is not excessively costly either, especially if you can perform some maintenance yourself.

1999 Ford Mustang Insurance

Insurance for a 1999 Ford Mustang is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Coupe with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 1999 Ford Mustang Compare to Other Coupe?

The 1999 Ford Mustang's key rivals included the Chevrolet Camaro/Pontiac Firebird twins. In terms of performance, the Mustang GT offered similar V8 power to the Camaro/Firebird, while the Cobra could be more potent, especially the models with the independent rear suspension. The Camaro/Firebird arguably had slightly better handling, particularly with the WS6 package. In terms of features, the Mustang and Camaro/Firebird were fairly comparable, offering similar levels of equipment.
Reliability can be a mixed bag for all these cars, with age-related issues being common. The Mustang's solid rear axle is simpler than the Camaro/Firebird's torque arm suspension, potentially leading to fewer rear-end issues, but it lacks the handling prowess. Price-wise, the Mustang often represented a good value. Other alternatives to consider might be a Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX (if all-wheel drive is desired), or a BMW Z3 (if a smaller, more refined roadster is appealing but with a higher price point and maintenance costs).
Ultimately, the best choice depends on individual preferences. If raw power and Mustang heritage are priorities, the 1999 Mustang is a solid choice. If handling is paramount, the Camaro/Firebird might be a better option. For a more refined, but potentially more expensive experience, the BMW Z3 is worth considering.

Final Verdict: Is the 1999 Ford Mustang a Good Coupe?

The 1999 Ford Mustang is ideal for enthusiasts seeking affordable American muscle with classic styling and ample customization potential. It's worth buying, especially on the used market, if you're prepared for potential maintenance and age-related repairs. The GT trim offers a good balance of performance and affordability. Cobra models are desirable for their increased power and independent rear suspension, but command a higher price and potentially higher maintenance costs. Avoid neglected examples or those with excessive rust. A pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic is highly recommended. The 1999 Mustang is not a commuter car, but rather a fun weekend cruiser or project car.
