Rating: 4.29
Based on 78 Owner Reviews
Drew B | March 31, 2025
The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, part of the WJ generation (1999-2004), is a mid-size SUV known for its blend of on-road comfort and off-road capability. It's a unibody design, available in trims like Laredo, Limited, and Overland. Pricing ranged from around $26,000 to $37,000 when new. It stands out due to its rugged appeal, powerful engine options, and Jeep's strong off-road heritage.
The Good

The 2002 Grand Cherokee offers strong performance, especially with the V8 engines. It provides a comfortable ride and a classic, rugged design. Practical buyers appreciate its towing capacity and off-road abilities, while emotional buyers connect with the Jeep's adventurous spirit and go-anywhere image. Reliability can be decent if well-maintained.

The Bad

The 2002 Grand Cherokee can suffer from electrical issues, including malfunctioning window regulators and climate control problems. Rust can be a concern, particularly in areas with salted roads. Some owners have reported transmission issues, especially with the earlier 4.7L V8 models. Fuel economy is also not its strong suit.

What Problems Does the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Have?

The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee, like other WJ models, has some frequently reported problems. One common issue is with the window regulators, which tend to fail, causing windows to drop into the door. Climate control issues, such as the blend doors malfunctioning, are also prevalent, leading to inconsistent temperature regulation. The 4.7L V8 engine, particularly in earlier production models, had reports of "sludge" buildup if not properly maintained with frequent oil changes using the correct oil type. This can lead to engine damage over time. Transmission issues, including rough shifting or failure, have also been reported, especially in higher-mileage vehicles. Rust, particularly in areas with road salt, is a major concern, affecting the undercarriage and body panels. Electrical problems, such as sensor failures and wiring issues, can also occur. Recalls for this model year were issued for issues related to airbags and fuel tank leaks. Long-term reliability hinges heavily on maintenance; neglecting regular servicing can lead to a cascade of problems, significantly impacting the vehicle's lifespan. Thorough inspection before purchase is essential.

How long will the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee last?

A well-maintained 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee can reasonably reach 200,000 miles or more. With good maintenance habits, including regular oil changes, fluid checks, and timely repairs, many owners report 15-20 years of service. However, poor maintenance can drastically shorten its lifespan. Long-term durability is often affected by rust, especially in colder climates. Electrical systems can become problematic over time, and the transmission may require rebuilding or replacement at higher mileages. The 4.7L V8 can be durable if well-maintained, but neglecting it can lead to premature failure.
Positive Owner Reviews
66 miles a day to work and back year roundd and still looks like new
My 2002 with 300,000 and going strong.never a major problem..knock on wood.I am thinking maybe 500,000 if I get really lucky.4.7 a good strong engine with no burning oil at this point of its lifetime

Purchased 2002 Jeep in 2004. Other than an engine, rear end 2x, and blend door actuators 2x replaced in the last 200k miles, I am happy with my Jeep.
Jass
I have alot of cars of my own. But everything she said in the description was true perfect but I need something bigger and she has paperwork.
Negative Owner Reviews
Cowgirl1010
This vehicle is a total failure in every way except for the V8. Everything broke at least once with big payouts to repair. The air conditioning broke 3 times, the heater doors broke twice with a $1000 price for repair each time. The heated seats broke after the factory warranty expired and not worth the $600 to fix. Radiator broke, locks broke and the body rusted on all sides. We donated the piece of junk and will never buy another.
out 13,000 and no car
Please do not wast your money. I have my jeep v8 4.7 2003 pice of junk sitting in my drive way for a year. Payed 9,000 a year ago and all the v8 4.7 engine have bad heads run fast. I paid 3,000 to fix it and lost that to now no one will even give me 2,000 for it. look up the year and the engine i will post all over face book
upset cherokee owner
my 2002 grand cherokee larado was great until 2011. It has drive problems that engages with 2 and 4 wheel drive. Mechanics are clueless!

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee's built-in tech reflects its era. Entertainment features typically included an AM/FM radio, cassette player, and optional CD player. Higher trims like the Limited and Overland offered upgraded audio systems with more speakers and potentially a CD changer. There were no advanced driver-assistance systems available. Safety features included standard front airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and available four-wheel drive. Side airbags were optional on some trims.

Crash test ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally show 4-star ratings for frontal impacts and 5-star ratings for side impacts, although this can vary by specific test and seating position. IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) ratings should also be checked for comprehensive safety data. The WJ Grand Cherokee lacked modern features like rearview cameras, blind-spot monitoring, or lane departure warning. Optional features included things like a sunroof, power seats, and upgraded sound systems. Overall, the tech and safety features were basic for the time, emphasizing core safety and entertainment functions rather than advanced driver aids.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee ranged from approximately $26,000 for the base Laredo to around $37,000 for a fully loaded Overland. Current used market prices typically range from $2,000 to $8,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. Depreciation has been significant due to age. Factors affecting resale value include: overall condition (rust-free examples command a premium), mileage (lower mileage is better), trim level (Limited and Overland are more desirable), and maintenance history. The V8 engine may attract some buyers, while others prefer the I6 for its simpler maintenance.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Cost of Ownership

The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee is generally considered moderately costly to own long-term. Insurance costs are average for its class. Fuel economy, particularly with the V8, is poor, leading to higher fuel expenses. Maintenance and repair costs can be substantial, especially as the vehicle ages. Parts are generally readily available, but labor costs can add up. Potential issues like transmission problems, electrical failures, and rust repair contribute to increased ownership costs. It's not an economical choice for budget-conscious buyers.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Insurance

Insurance for a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Wagon with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Compare to Other Wagon?

The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee competed with SUVs like the Ford Explorer, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder. In terms of performance, the Grand Cherokee, especially with the 4.7L V8, offered comparable power to the Explorer's V8 but lagged slightly behind the 4Runner's V8 in some metrics. Feature-wise, it offered a similar range of options to its rivals. However, the Toyota 4Runner generally had a better reputation for reliability. The Nissan Pathfinder offered a more car-like ride, which some buyers preferred. In terms of price, the Grand Cherokee was generally competitive when new.

Alternatives to consider include the Toyota 4Runner for its superior reliability and off-road prowess (though at a higher price point on the used market). The Ford Explorer offers a more spacious interior but may not be as rugged. The Nissan Pathfinder is a good choice for those prioritizing on-road comfort. If reliability is a primary concern, the 4Runner is a better alternative. The Grand Cherokee shines with its blend of off-road capability and on-road comfort, provided you're prepared for potential maintenance.

Final Verdict: Is the 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee a Good Wagon?

The 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee is ideal for buyers seeking a capable and relatively affordable SUV with a rugged image. It's worth buying *used* if you find a well-maintained example with low mileage and a clean service history, ideally in a rust-free condition. The Limited or Overland trims offer more features and creature comforts. However, be prepared for potential maintenance and repair costs. It's not a great choice for those prioritizing fuel economy or long-term reliability above all else. If you need off-road capability and appreciate the Jeep brand, and are prepared for potential repairs, it can be a worthwhile purchase. A pre-purchase inspection is highly recommended.

It's a keeper.

Laredo w/4.7 V8 purchased new. 220K miles in 20 years. Love the power. Still runs like new. Routine scheduled maintenance always. In that time replaced: rotors x1, struts x1, water pump x1, alternator x1, battery x3, tires x3, blower motor x1, heater coil x1, a/c compressor x1, valve cover gasket x1, rear main seal x1. If you think that's a lot in 20 years, think again. I am considering engine rebuild if possible since car is in such good condition.

2002 4.0 straight six the ultimate beast!

266,000 plus miles and as strong as ever. Same water pump, oil pump, timing chain. Everyday driver 50 miles a day round trip. At 20 years old it's been soo reliable that I gave it to my 16 year old son. Had a little rust repaired underbody. All in all, the best vehicle I ever had. In every car, you will find a bad one but, so far, every person I know that has the same vehicle said how great and ultra reliable they are.

Bust out another $1000 or have a yard ornament.

I bought this Jeep brand new it only had 13 miles on it from the test drive.. I have spent more then $10,000 on repairs on this vehicle in the last 20 years because its always broke down. I've almost never take it off road. Every time I turn around there's something wrong with it and its in the shop and I have to get a rental. This vehicle is very high maintenance.

2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee LTD

Purchased 2002 Jeep in 2004. Other than an engine, rear end 2x, and blend door actuators 2x replaced in the last 200k miles, I am happy with my Jeep.

All around "just right" SUV, and long lasting

Right size, utility, and comfort. Right economy, reliability, and quality. Can't find anything to buy today that measures up. Never expected it to be still running fine at 180,000 miles but it is! The Power Tech 4.7 V8 is strong contender for Jeep's historically best engines.

Never buy a Jeep

This vehicle is a total failure in every way except for the V8. Everything broke at least once with big payouts to repair. The air conditioning broke 3 times, the heater doors broke twice with a $1000 price for repair each time. The heated seats broke after the factory warranty expired and not worth the $600 to fix. Radiator broke, locks broke and the body rusted on all sides. We donated the piece of junk and will never buy another.

Most reliable car I have owned

At 238382 miles, the 4.0 straight 6 engine and transmission seem as strong as ever. I have never broken down, same water pump, same alternator, very easy to repair or replace parts. I still use every day to work, 25 miles each way. I average about 17 miles a gallon. Great in the snow! It's a beast!
