What Problems Does the 2016 Toyota Prius c Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2016 Toyota Prius c are relatively minor compared to some other vehicles. Some owners have reported issues with the infotainment system freezing or being unresponsive. Others have mentioned premature wear of brake pads, likely due to the regenerative braking system's reliance on them. Some have noted rattling noises from the dashboard or rear hatch area.

Recalls for the 2016 Prius c have been issued for potential issues like fuel leakage and faulty airbag inflators (Takata recall). It's crucial to check the vehicle's VIN with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) to see if all applicable recalls have been addressed.

Long-term reliability concerns primarily revolve around the hybrid battery pack. While Toyota hybrid batteries are generally durable, they can degrade over time, especially with high mileage or improper maintenance. Replacement can be costly. Regular maintenance, including timely fluid changes and inspections, is crucial to maximizing the lifespan of the hybrid system. Overall, the Prius c is generally reliable, but battery health should be a key consideration when purchasing a used model. Also, check for water leaks, as some owners have reported issues with the seals around the doors and windows.

How long will the 2016 Toyota Prius c last?

With regular maintenance, a 2016 Toyota Prius c can easily last 200,000 miles or more, potentially providing 10-15 years of service. Toyota hybrids are known for their longevity. Key to long-term durability is diligent maintenance, especially regarding the hybrid battery. Weaknesses that emerge over time typically involve battery degradation, potentially requiring replacement. Suspension components and brake systems may also require attention as mileage increases. Keeping up with fluid changes and addressing minor issues promptly can significantly extend the vehicle's lifespan.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2016 Toyota Prius c comes standard with a 6.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth connectivity for phone calls and audio streaming, and a USB port. Higher trims add features like navigation and a premium audio system with six speakers.

Driver-assistance features are limited compared to newer vehicles. Standard safety features include Toyota's Star Safety System: vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist. There's no advanced driver-assistance tech like automatic emergency braking or lane departure warning available even as options.

The 2016 Prius c received good crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety), earning a "Good" rating in several categories. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) awarded it four out of five stars overall. Specific ratings may vary depending on the test. While the infotainment system is basic, the emphasis is on essential safety features, reflecting its focus on affordability and practicality. Optional features are limited to the higher trim levels, primarily focusing on convenience and aesthetics rather than advanced technology.

reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2016 Toyota Prius c Compare to Other Sedan?

The 2016 Toyota Prius c competes with subcompact cars like the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa Note, and Kia Rio. In terms of fuel economy, the Prius c is a clear winner. However, its performance is less impressive than the Honda Fit, which offers a more engaging driving experience. Feature-wise, the Prius c is adequate, but rivals often offer more advanced technology, even in base trims.

Reliability is a strong point for the Prius c, potentially exceeding that of some competitors. Price-wise, the Prius c was typically more expensive than base models of its rivals when new but offers better fuel economy to offset that cost.

Alternatives to consider include: the Honda Insight (for a more refined hybrid experience), the Kia Niro (for more space and features) or a used Toyota Prius (for a larger size, but similar fuel economy). If fuel economy is paramount and space is not a major concern, the Prius c remains a compelling choice. However, those prioritizing performance or advanced features might prefer alternatives.

Final Verdict: Is the 2016 Toyota Prius c a Good Sedan?

It's worth buying as a used vehicle, especially if well-maintained with a healthy hybrid battery. Specific trims are less critical; focus on overall condition and maintenance history. The Prius c isn't for those seeking thrilling performance or abundant space. However, for affordable, dependable, and fuel-efficient transportation, it's a solid option, provided you thoroughly inspect the hybrid system before purchase. If possible, a pre-purchase inspection by a qualified mechanic specializing in hybrids is highly recommended.

One of the best cars ever

I daily the prius C 2 and it's just the perfect car. It's small and light enough to just zip through traffic and the instant torque from the electric engine can get you where you need to go quick. The handling is tight and responsive and the wheel is nice and smooth. Nimble, light, and forgiving is how I would describe the drive feel. The car can fit quite a bit of cargo for its size if the seats are folded down. I moved all of my stuff cross country in it and honesty could have fit more than I brougt. Otherwise, it can comfortably move 3 passengers + driver without much issue. The only thing it can't do is haul a bunch of luggage and people at the same time. When you baby it, you'll get mpg near 50, so fuel costs are a nonissue. It's never broken down and never had any issues that weren't my fault. It's the perfect car and I would recommend it to anyone who was open minded about driving a small car.

Fits my needs at this time

Nothing fancy, but I wasn’t looking for fancy. I did not want anything too large, but the hatchback gives me more possibilities in a small car. It handles really nicely and has good acceleration. Getting over 50 miles to the gallon is also a plus.

Most Inexpensive Vehicle to Drive!

I love that it only takes me around $15 to fill up the tank each time. With it being a hybrid, it makes trips very smooth and relatively inexpensive (more to spend on snacks)! Although, it doesn't have cruise control, this car is perfect for traveling all over. The previous driver (my brother) used to drive it to Pennsylvania and back at least once a month. The sound system is great too! The leg room is sufficient if you're not a big, burly person. This car has been great with traveling with the dogs, the back seat folds down to open up the whole hatch!

On the flimsy side...

I traded in an 18-year-old RAV4, a 5-speed stick and very bare bones, to buy a new 2016 Prius c Three with navigation and moon roof. I'm very happy with the gas mileage, haven't noticed the interior noise that other reviewers have mentioned, and the slow acceleration really doesn't bother me. And overall, I like the way the car looks and handles. HOWEVER, in the two years I've owned the car. I've already replaced the windshield and am about to replace the front bumper (although repair is also an option). With the windshield, I got a small chip in it last year after a rock hit it on the interstate. My RAV4 had taken a hundred hits in the years I'd owned it without any damage. I had the windshield repaired at first but the repair was bad and I wound up getting a new windshield at cost. The glass guy said they don't make windshields the way they used to and he also suggested that the slope of the Prius c windshield might make it more susceptible to chips. Then I was horrified recently to see a 5-inch crack in the bottom edge of my front bumper on the the right side. This was my first experience with a fiberglass bumper and, after Googling it, I found that these plastic bumpers can get very brittle and fragile in cold weather (I live in Maine). I have no idea how this happened, although more than one person described cracking a bumper after simply hitting a snowbank. I also heard, from three body shops, that this type of damage is not unusual with the Prius c since it's so low to the ground. My Toyota salesman also said this but said the trade-off is the really low gas mileage! Well, I told him that paying $800 for a new bumper will eat up an awful lot of gas savings. I did browse a few pages of reviews before I bought the car but I don't recall seeing any of this mentioned. I'd always considered myself a careful driver but it seems one has to be extra careful with the Prius c, considering how low it is to the ground and how brittle the plastic can get in the cold. And I cringe every time a pebble hits my windshield...

Two years in and it's still going strong.

Great gas mileage! If you are looking for luxury go elsewhere. If you want truly great gas mileage this is the car for you. On average we get 51mpg+ around town, which is where most of our driving occurs. On longer trips gas mileage is directly related to driving speed. At 85+ we were at 38mpg, but at 70 we achieved 45mpg. No mechanical issues after 2 years.

Unbeatable car for retirees!

I originally purchased the Prius c for my late wife for commuting to work but other than that I became the principal driver. Since her passing earlier this year it has become my car while my SUV gathers dust in my garage. My current 60 MPG in not the major reason, though, but it gives me plenty of room for road trips and to carry my walker or wheel chair (I'm 81 and mobility handicapped) along with luggage and a human (not dog or cat) travel companion. My only regret is that I waited so long to buy this car so my wife only enjoyed it for a year. As a side note; the Prius c also has enough room with the back seat down for my "Go-Go" Electrical Mobility Chair. It's the perfect car for Super Seniors like me
