The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander is a compact crossover SUV that entered its second generation with this model year. Available trims included ES, SE, and GT. It offered seating for up to seven passengers in some configurations, a unique selling point in its class. New, the Outlander ranged approximately from $23,000 to $30,000. It stood out for its available third-row seating and relatively affordable price point.
The Good

The 2013 Outlander's advantages lie in its practicality and value. The available third-row seating appeals to families, while the fuel efficiency of the four-cylinder models is a plus for budget-conscious buyers. While not thrilling, the design is inoffensive. The Outlander offers a comfortable ride for everyday driving, especially compared to some rivals.

The Bad

The 2013 Outlander's weaknesses include lackluster engine performance, particularly with the base four-cylinder. The interior materials feel budget-oriented. Reliability can be a concern, with some owners reporting issues with the electrical system and transmission. The third-row seating is cramped and best suited for children.

What Problems Does the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?

Frequently reported problems for the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander often revolve around the transmission. Some owners have reported issues such as harsh shifting, slipping, or complete transmission failure, sometimes at relatively low mileage. Electrical issues are also prevalent, including problems with the infotainment system, power windows, and various sensors. The air conditioning system has also been known to fail prematurely in some cases.

While specific recalls for the 2013 model year might vary depending on the source (always check NHTSA for the most up-to-date information), it's important to be aware of any potential recalls related to safety-critical components such as airbags, brakes, or fuel systems. Long-term reliability can be a concern due to these recurring problems. Pre-purchase inspections are highly recommended, focusing on checking the transmission fluid condition and functionality, as well as thoroughly testing all electrical components.

It's worth noting that some of these issues are more commonly reported on the four-cylinder models, possibly due to the transmission being under more strain compared to the V6-equipped versions. Investigating repair histories and owner forums can provide valuable insights into the specific problems that may arise with this model year.

How long will the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander last?

With proper maintenance, a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander can reasonably achieve 150,000 to 200,000 miles. However, long-term durability depends heavily on consistent maintenance, particularly transmission fluid changes. Weaknesses over time include potential for rust, especially in areas with harsh winters, and degradation of interior plastics. Regular servicing of the cooling system is crucial to prevent overheating, a common issue reported in older Outlanders. Addressing minor issues promptly can prevent them from escalating into costly repairs down the line.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?

The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander's tech and entertainment features are fairly basic, especially in the lower trims. Standard features include a six-speaker audio system with CD player and auxiliary input. Higher trims, like the GT, offered a Rockford Fosgate premium audio system with a subwoofer. Navigation was available as an option. Driver-assistance features were limited for this model year; a rearview camera was available on the GT trim.

Safety features included standard antilock brakes, stability control, traction control, and a full complement of airbags. Optional features, depending on the trim, included rain-sensing wipers and automatic headlights.

Crash-test ratings for the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander vary depending on the source. The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) generally awarded it four out of five stars for overall safety. The IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) provided mixed results, with good ratings in some categories but marginal ratings in others, particularly the small overlap front crash test (though this test was introduced after the 2013 model year's initial assessment). Prospective buyers should consult both NHTSA and IIHS for the most accurate and up-to-date safety information. Checking the specific build date can sometimes reveal if a vehicle was tested under newer, more stringent safety standards.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Prices and Market Value

When new, the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander ranged from around $23,000 for the base ES trim to approximately $30,000 for the top-tier GT. Current used market prices typically range from $6,000 to $12,000, depending on condition, mileage, and trim level. The Outlander has experienced significant depreciation due to its brand reputation, reliability concerns, and the availability of more modern and feature-rich competitors. Lower mileage examples with clean titles and well-documented maintenance records command higher resale values, but overall, depreciation is a major factor to consider.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Cost of Ownership

The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander's insurance costs are generally average for its class. Fuel costs are reasonable, particularly with the four-cylinder engine. However, maintenance and repair costs can be higher than average due to potential reliability issues. Parts availability might be limited and more expensive than some competing brands. Long-term ownership can be costly if major repairs are needed, making it less economical overall. Careful maintenance and a thorough pre-purchase inspection are essential to mitigating these costs.

2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Insurance

Insurance for a 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander is moderately priced, reflecting its status as a Sport Utility Vehicle with strong safety ratings and
reasonable repair costs.

How Does the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander competes with vehicles like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape. In terms of performance, the CR-V, RAV4, and CX-5 offer more refined driving experiences and better handling. The Outlander's engine options are generally considered less powerful and less fuel-efficient than its rivals. Feature-wise, the Outlander lags behind in terms of technology and available driver-assistance systems compared to later model years of its competitors.

Reliability is a significant concern for the Outlander, with the CR-V and RAV4 consistently ranking higher in reliability surveys. While the Outlander may be initially cheaper to purchase used, potential repair costs can offset this advantage. As for price, the Outlander often undercuts its rivals, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. However, the long-term cost of ownership needs to be carefully considered.

Alternatives to the 2013 Outlander include the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 for superior reliability and resale value, the Mazda CX-5 for a more engaging driving experience, and the Ford Escape for a wider range of available features and technology. If third-row seating is a necessity, consider larger SUVs or minivans instead of relying on the Outlander's cramped rear seats.

Final Verdict: Is the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Sport Utility Vehicle?

The 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander is best suited for budget-conscious buyers who prioritize affordability and available third-row seating over performance and reliability. It's worth buying only under specific conditions: a thorough pre-purchase inspection by a trusted mechanic is essential, focusing on transmission health and electrical system functionality. A lower mileage example with a documented service history is preferable. Opting for the V6 GT trim might offer slightly better reliability than the four-cylinder models. If reliability and long-term costs are primary concerns, consider alternatives like the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4, even if they command a higher price. It's not recommended as a new vehicle due to its age and better alternatives available.

Our new (for us) Mazda has all of the bells and whistles and is beautiful besides! Although technically my wife's car, I'm getting plenty of time behind the wheel:)

Very good vehicle

this is the second car of this type that we have owned, we had a 2010 prior to buying the 2013. Car is Identical to the 2010 yr, but with a few extras, namely heated front seats and an additional 3rd seat. I wouldn't recommend the 3rd seat for long trips. The only thing that was a detractor was that there are not Daytime driving lights installed, the 2010 year had them but not the 13, they just come in the sport version of this model. I think you will find that the warranties are the best. makes this outlander a good buy!
