The Good
The 2012 Outlander offers practical advantages like available third-row seating and decent fuel economy, appealing to families. The optional V6 engine provides adequate power, satisfying drivers seeking performance. Its relatively low price point represents good value. While not luxurious, the interior offers adequate comfort for daily commutes. Reliability is generally considered average for its class.
The Bad
Weaknesses of the 2012 Outlander include a somewhat dated interior design and less refined ride compared to competitors. The base four-cylinder engine can feel underpowered, especially when fully loaded. Some owners have reported issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT). Rust can be a concern in areas with harsh winters, so inspect carefully.

What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic stability control, traction control, and front and side airbags. Optional features included a rearview camera, available on higher trims. Crash-test ratings from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) were generally good, earning "Good" ratings in several categories. NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) ratings varied, but generally scored adequately. Keep in mind that safety technology has advanced considerably since 2012, so consider this in the context of modern standards. The available all-wheel-drive system added an extra layer of safety in adverse weather conditions. The optional navigation system, while dated by today's standards, provided route guidance. The Rockford Fosgate audio system was a notable upgrade for audiophiles.

How Does the 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Sport Utility Vehicle?
Better alternatives, considering long-term reliability and refinement, might be the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V, even if they cost slightly more upfront. The Nissan Rogue offers a more modern interior but may have its own reliability concerns. The Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson offer good value and longer warranties. Ultimately, the best alternative depends on individual priorities, such as price, features, or reliability.

Gem of a pick.I bought this used 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander SE in 2014 with about 23,000 miles on it. All 8 years that I’ve had it, with the odometer now at just over 100,000 miles, the only things I had done on it is put in a new set of tires twice and and brake pads replacement/service twice. It has never broken down on me, or required any repair whatsoever in all the 8 years and more than 80,000 miles that I have had it. The on-demand 4-wheel drive feature works great in the snow. It does not have the most powerful engine, but is more than adequate for everyday commuting and has proven to be extremely reliable and sturdy. The brand may not rank well against the more acclaimed ones, but I think I got the year model that turned out to be a gem of a pick. I have owned 3 Toyotas, 2 Hondas, 1 Hyundai, 1 Mazda and 1 Chrysler, and I can rank this Mitsubishi along with the Honda as my best ever in reliability, durability and value.

One of the best / reliable vehicles I have owned. This is our second Mitsubishi, first was a Lancer and was also a great vehicle. Bought our 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander GT from D&E Mitsubishi in Wilmington, NC as a certified pre-owned with 23,000 miles on it in early 2014. Vehicle was a Mitsubishi Exec demo vehicle, so it was fully loaded with every available option for the model year. Fast forward to 2019 we have 141,000 miles of trouble free driving. Vehicle has been to Florida and back several times, as well as all over the Carolinas on frequent trips. I would drive it to California and back today. Besides routine and recommended maintenance and one battery, no other repairs have had to be made. Still runs and handles like when it was first purchased. Very little interior rattle or noises as it has aged. I plan on keeping this one as long as it will allow us to! Only complaints are some of the interior materials scratch or mark easy and the paint is real thin and chips / scratches easy. Lancer had the same problem, so appears to be a Mitsubishi fit/finish issue. Other than that, again a great vehicle! 4WD/AWD (S/AWC) works extremely well in snow and sand. Gets decent gas mileage for a V6 SUV/CUV with AWD.

Love my OutlanderI have a 2012 Outlander and LOVE it. I have had to move cross country and all over the states several times and am impressed with how much I can fit in my SUV. I love that the seats fold down for extra storage. I added a hitch to the back so I could pull a small trailer, it can also pull a boat. It's a strong, durable, reliable, comfortable car that gets the job done.

Transmission just went. $7500 fix!I have to say I have had the 2012 Outlander SE since 2012 and overall very happy. I do a lot of mileage and have 157k on it. Out of no where service engine light comes on and won't go into gear. Bring to three mechanics and all say same transmission. $7500-9000 repair. Not worth fixing for value of car. Had other brands and at least symptoms occur before a light. I am scrambling to find another car asap.

Outstanding vehicleI purchased the car at the end of 2013 new and it was a left over 2012, happened to be the exact color and options I wanted, White GT loaded with everything. The car has an amazing super all wheel control system that handles like a dream in the snow. The car has been completely trouble free. I have put 47k mile on it in 2 years and its never let me down. The stereo system is outrageous and a BLAST! What a great driving experience my friends always compliment on how much they like it when they ride in it. I definitely made the right decision buying this car and would do it all over again if given the option.

Reliable Efficient SUVWe purchased a used 2012 with about 30,000km and have since put another 45,000km on the vehicle. Other than dealer tires wearing out prematurely, no real complaints. The dial 4 wheel drive is great in the snow and other amenities like heated seats are a nice touch. Would definitely consider another Outlander as our next vehicle.
