Analysis
What Problems Does the 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander Have?
Other potential issues include problems with the power windows and door locks, though these are less common. Some owners have also reported issues with the air conditioning system. Recalls for the 2004 Outlander have been issued for various reasons over the years; checking the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) website for any outstanding recalls specific to the VIN is highly recommended.
Long-term reliability can be affected by these issues if they are not addressed promptly. Ensuring the vehicle has been well-maintained and has a comprehensive service history is vital. Because the 2004 model is relatively old, component wear and tear are expected, so pre-purchase inspection is more important than ever.
How long will the 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander last?
Long-term durability is primarily affected by rust and the automatic transmission. Regular oil changes, timely replacement of wear items (brakes, tires, etc.), and proactive attention to any emerging mechanical issues are key to extending the vehicle's lifespan. Neglecting maintenance will significantly shorten its service life. The plastic interior trim is a known weakness and can become brittle over time.
What Technology & Safety Features are Included?
Safety features included standard front airbags and anti-lock brakes (ABS). Side airbags were often available as an option, particularly on the XLS trim. Electronic Stability Control (ESC) was not available. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) crash-test ratings varied depending on the specific test. It generally received decent scores for frontal impact protection but lower scores for side impact protection. Always consult the NHTSA website for specific crash test ratings for this model year.
Optional features beyond the XLS trim level included items like a sunroof, roof rack, and upgraded wheels. Compared to modern vehicles, the 2004 Outlander lacked features like Bluetooth connectivity, navigation systems, and rearview cameras, which are now commonplace.

How Does the 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander Compare to Other Vehicle?
The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are generally considered better alternatives due to their superior reliability and resale value. The Subaru Forester offered a similar level of utility with standard all-wheel drive, making it a compelling choice for buyers in colder climates. The Ford Escape was another competitor, offering a range of engine options.
While the Outlander was a decent vehicle, its rivals often offered a more compelling package in terms of long-term reliability and overall ownership experience. Potential buyers should carefully weigh the pros and cons against these alternatives.

Final Verdict: Is the 2004 Mitsubishi Outlander a Good Vehicle?
Jackb5 on September 28, 2023
Good first/all rounder car. This was and still is my very first car I've owned. I'm almost 19, and have had this for over 2 years. I haven't had many issues with this car, but I'll start with interior. Mitsubishi interiors kind of suck, and this isn't really all too much of an exception. The seat colors look stained, even when they're not, the door panels rattle at a HINT of audio bass, and the cup holders are located RIGHt behind the shifter, which becomes an annoyance when you need to use it while you have drinks. Besides that, the interior is ok. Decent leg room, pretty spacious, amazing sound system, good storage locations, overall decent. The exterior looks.. funky. SUVs of this era commonly had this weird grille shape, and matched with the thin and long design of the Outlander, it looks stretched. Parking kinda sucks since it's hard to see where the nose ends. Besides this, good design. I prefer it without the roof racks, as it gives it a more sporty, kind of hatchback look. Now with performance... meh, again. 2004 introduced the 4g69, which had an extra 20hp than the previous year. It also has MIVEC, which is VTEC but with mitsubishi in the name. With the weight of the car being around 3,400lb, it won't really win much (if any) 0-60 times. It's a drive train that does its job. Almost 200k miles and the engine still feels peppy, crazy what basic maintenance can do for a car. Now.. who's this car for? When it was released, Mitsubishi advertised it as a car you could go off-roading with during the weekend, but still use as a daily driver to and from work. It's a jack of all trades, master of none, "beginners" car. It's a serviceable first car for today. It's a small SUV, big hatchback. It's a good all-rounder, which is something I greatly appreciate as I can't afford several cars. All in all, I would recommend it to someone who just wants to have a spacious, compact, reliable yet affordable car. I find myself ragging on it a lot, but as long as you don't compare it to cars of today, you'll learn just how versatile it is.

Very comfortable and reliable.Did an excellent job of meeting my needs. While moving I found I was able to transport an amazing amount of furniture in it including large items of furniture. Fold down the back seats and thereβs an amazing amount of room. The mileage is not quite as good as advertised, but the acceleration is great. I guess thatβs an expected trade off. All in all Iβve been very happy with it.

Perfect size little SUVCurrently has 200,000 miles and running strong. Bought used with 190,000. I have done no repairs other than oil change, sparks, ball joints, brakes, the normal stuff. I like the size, decent on gas mileage. AWD is good, I just wished it had steering wheel controls and power seats.

Car in a pinchReasonable price and condition for a back and forth to work car. If I were the original owner of this car, I would still be the owner of this car.

Excellent carBought the car used with 160k miles. A year and a half later the car still runs and looks like new (fantastic engine, and amazing paint). Amazing 4wd system. Great off road.

Mitsubishi OutlanderThe SUV is not a bad car for the price I paid. Its comfortable and the gas mileage is not to bad either. It runs like a champ, and I would recommend this kind of car to everyone, if you want a reliable vehicle.

Love the car, getting parts is difficultHave enjoyed having and driving this car--bought it used some years ago--but now it's getting more challenging as suspension parts are rusting and needing replacement, and getting parts and having a Mitsubishi dealer (now 2 hours away) do the safety recall work. I'm sad to say I will not get another Mitsubishi automobile with the distance I have to travel to get to a dealer.
